Useful Apps

A friend of mine gave me a newspaper cutting the other day from the Sunday Times listing some useful apps for various things.

These included Alpine Replay which works out how many calories you are burning

Action Shot which is for photographing of all things, action shots, using a burst mode.

Ski Tracks for stat nerds and includes speed, distance, vertical decent, altitude, no of runs, slope angle blah blah.

Mammut Safety which gives up to date information on local avalanche risks, this requires some information locally (avalanche risk) but then uses a built in compass and altimeter to check the area you want to ski.

Ski & Snow report, which is what it says on the tin.

All are free apart from Ski Tracks.

Surely there is an app for how many calories you intake during lunch and apres ski. I'm partial to french tarts for instance.

Re:Useful Apps

I ran 3 tracking apps while skiing in 3V, Alpine Replay, Ski Tracks and the Meribel app. I found Alpine Replay a bit flakey, despite says it had uploaded successfully only one of my 8 days appeared on the website.
Ski Tracks was so much better, worth the nominal cost.
Meribel adding tracking to their app is a nice touch, though fairly limited.

The 3 Valleys app was great, being able to see where you are on the piste map is good, plus you can pull up restaurant info, lift times etc

Both Ski Tracks and Alpine Replay have had an update launched this week. I'm not sure what the changes are, but will have another play in Mayrhofen.

Re:Useful Apps

One of my mates has one of those watches that measures heart rate and works out calories burned from that. The reading from that would suggest that the calorie count on the apps are wildly inaccurate.

I would imagine how many calories you burn whilst ski-ing depends on a number of things apart from the actual distance travelled - like the condition of the slope at the time, how fit you are, how good you are at ski-ing etc. ...
To revive this

Been looking at Ski Tracks. Thinking of splashing out the 79p fee. It says that it does not drain battery power. Anyone any experience of this?

Is it just GPS that it uses for location etc?

Surely the max speed all day will be when I am on a cable car? I am no speed demon

Re:Useful Apps

When I remembered to use it in st Moritz and hintertux, it drained battery like a beeeeeatch
But it works on GPS so doesn't nail you for 3G

86 kph was the fastest bre corded, which compared to the old man of j2 is pathetic. But that was 2 seasons ago and I am definitely quicker now ;-)

Buy it. Get on with it. Enjoy it.

I used it in Seefeld in Feb, and whilst I did not remember to use it often enough, I found that it wasn't too heavy on the battery of my Samsung.

What use the information was, when I did switch it on, I have reservations about, but it was interesting. Has nothing to do with quality of skiing or how good technique is, and is it improving!!

If you're worried about battery drain Ski Tracks can be set to stop tracking when your battery reaches a certain level. Meaning you'll have enough to make a call, receive texts, etc.

Re:Useful Apps

I used Ski Tracks on my iPhone this year and thought it was really good, certainly worth 69p. It didn't drain the battery too much, certainly not like other activities e.g. making a telephone call which I don't think Apple considered when they designed the i"phone"!

Evidently we travelled uphill a bit, downhill a bit and at varying speeds. And I can prove it! I found the distance travelled most interesting.

I also have "on the snow" ski info which was free and is a neat way to see conditions, forecast and webcams at your favourite resorts.

Johnski96
