Thought Google Maps was just for finding your way around streets and roadways? Or for spotting yourself lounging outside your house on that fateful day the Google car drove by? Well guess again! Google Maps can now be used to check out the snow on your favourite slopes or for discovering new areas of skiing you had yet to visit!

For example, take a look at the Austrian ski resort of Solden and its snowy slopes!

Iceman, are you making a presumption that this is a live, or even recent picture?

I zoomed out, crossed to Scotland, zoomed in to our house, and the pic is at least pre 2004. I checked out a few Austrian resorts where I know buildings have gone up in the last few years, and the buildings are missing from the map.

What the map would be great for, is if you are thinking of booking a particular property, and wanted to know the geo-relationship to the lifts/shops/restaurants. Most of these seemed to be marked.

I think its the fact that "streetview" works on the piste that is the thing.

Looks fun - any idea where else they have done yet - heard that Zermatt was done last year.

Dave, sorry to pee on your chips but the Google street view is updated at different places all over the world at different times - they dont just do the world in 2004 :roll:

Andy, if you "turnaround" you can see what looks like the Google car with a man sticking out of the top :shock:

Interestingly none of the mapped resorts (according to the blog list) are in France. Maybe the French are like the Chinese and don't trust Google......

Bits of it are certainly working in france - this was grabbed from street view/google maps above meribel up near the Saulire and shows how they are doing it with the skidoo shadow!

I went on Google earth the other day to see where the chalet was I will be staying at in February. And although it's not 'real time' it's nice to see what it looks like, particularly with snow.

I realise that, Icy, it's just that I can date the 2004, it was 2 house extensions ago!

I also looked at some Austrian resorts, and they have buildings missing that are now in situ, one of them I can put at 2007/8.

, it does seem to give the impression of relatively live info. My mistake.
