Tourist Tax, Sauze D'Oulx

Just received an email from Crystal stating that we will have to pay a tourist tax of between 0.75 to 3.00 Euros per person per night , direct to the hotelier dependent on the star rating of the hotel. Is this usual for Italy? What more do they want! Already paying full whack for all inclusive at Feb half term. Could do without a possible further 72 Euros.

Yes it's usual in most European resorts. Going rate seems to be 1.10euros per night.

Just found this:
Please note that there is a government tax in place across Italy which means that hotel guests must pay a tourist tax. This is Euro0.75 per person per night for hotels up to 3 stars. For hotels above 3 star the rate is Euro1.00 pppn. This is not included in the prices that are displayed on the site. It must be paid in cash when guests check out of the hotels.

But interesting - had a look at Crystal terms and condition - http://www.crystalski.co.uk/our-policies/terms-and-conditions/important-info/

and under what's included is ....

All local taxes, VAT, UK & overseas service charges, & bed linen
All current airport taxes are included in our prices including the Air Travel Duty

The above is on "Air holidays" but train and self-drive is slightly different as they say "All local taxes unless otherwise advised"

I think I would be asking them to look at their own terms and conditions!

The tax is called "tassa di soggiorno" in Italian. It was abolished in 1991 but reintroduced by the central government last year. Each municipality is responsible for levying it and determining the rate, Sauze D'Oulx reintroduced it in July http://www.comune.sauzedoulx.to.it/doc/Delibera_istituzione_imposta_soggiorno.pdf
It doesn't apply to children under 12.

The relevant section is to be found on page 3 and begins:
Ricordato che Il Consiglio Regionale ha adottato, in attuazione dell'art. 12 del d.lgs. 114/1998 e dell'art. 9 della legge regionale 28/1999, la deliberazione n. 412-5585, avente ad oggetto i criteri per l'individuazione delle localita turistiche ai fini degli orari delle attivita commerciali

Crystal might not have known anything about it when they were preparing their brochure.

Crystal prices do not include:
Meals and accommodation en route (except where specified)
In-flight catering on some short haul flights
Airport holiday supplement, where applicable
Ski travel insurance (which you must have, see web)
Carriage of skis and snowboards on charter flights (included on some scheduled flights)
Porterage of luggage at any stage
Breakdown Insurance (Self-Drive)
CDW or local taxes on car hire
Any services provided locally that are advertised as being available at the booked resort or accommodation, but not described as free of charge e.g. child care/ski school, hotel facilities.
Any local gratuities, taxes charged by hotels/condos in USA/Canada
Credit card fees.
Italian tourist tax.

Igluski just emailed me a letter from crystal about these tourist taxes for champoluc next month.

Am I missing something, or is it just crystal that are passing these charges on?

Just received the following from Neilson:
HI, Italy has been introducing a tax slowly in each area over the last year and so it's now across nearly all resorts and is a pppn fee payable to the local town hall.
Most tour operators are asking guests to pay this charge directly to the hoteliers, however Neilson are covering the fee in the cost of the holiday. Hope that helps explain

Not exactly, but very interesting.
I will be emailing crystal to ask why they feel it appropriate to pass this on when Nielsen aren't.

Received a polite letter stating that they would be looking into it........must remember to drop in the next email that some other T/O's are absorbing it. Also noticed today on my daughters Uni ski trip ticket....tourist tax in Les Deux Alpes too. Euro1 - Euro2 per person per night!
