Easyjet ski/snowboard carriage - what would you do?

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

We always take a snowboard and pay the carriage (GBP50 this year when we booed with Easyjet - now GBP54 on line). In the past we've also packed boots and boarding pants in the same bag. Now it seems the bag has to be for one snowboard only and no clothing. So to take the kids snowboards it'll be another GBP54 x 2 - it's a lot cheaper to hire a board in resort for them but they want their own boards naturally.

Anybody any advice on this - is it a hard and fast rule? Have you had a problem being charged for excess baggage at checkin for having more than just one board in the bag irrespective of being within the specified weight limit?

My husbands view is to do as we always do and pack them in! Mine is more skeptical as I don't want to be stung at checkin and start the holiday off badly.

Thanks all.

Basically asking will we get away with it -)

IMO no one will be able to tell you if you will or not because if they have or haven't, it would have no bearing on your flights as all are individual. My view is not to take risks with airlines as they are always looking to take more money, so don't give them the chance.I wish you luck however you decide.

Re:Easyjet ski/snowboard carriage - what would you do?

I've never yet had to prove what is in the bag as that goes to outsize baggage manned by airport employees not EJ.
Seems more that you won't be able to claim on insurance should there be any damage as they only accept responsibility for the board.
When it stipulates ski/snowboard equipment in the t/c's then I choose to assume that means equipment neccessary to ski/board which surely extends to thermals/trousers/jacket/goggles/gloves/boots. (which in any case are covered my travel insurance)
Packing this way means I don't need a case as my apres clothes/toiletries (travel size) and helmet fit in my carry on.
But if ever there was a jobs worth who demanded to check the contents and refused to allow sports clothes in with it I would have to buy a bag in a hurry or wear everything on the plane!
(so far 8 trips like this without issue)

Re:Easyjet ski/snowboard carriage - what would you do?

It's easyjet we are talking about. They do what they want. Do they have a max size and weight for ski bags like the other airlines seem to have introduced recently? If so, stick to that and put what you want in it I'd have thought.

Re:Easyjet ski/snowboard carriage - what would you do?

It just seems unfair - GBP50 to GBP54 for a snowboard bag.

Gone are the cheap 'flights' now - hey ho bring on the snow!

Thanks everyone :-)

Swiss don't charge for carriage of snowsports equipment. Their flights are initially more expensive than EasyJet, but possibly not if you need to take skis/snowboards.

Did the airlines learn this ripoffery from the banks, or is it the other way round ?

Re:Easyjet ski/snowboard carriage - what would you do?

I've worked out that if you're going DIY, you're better off flying with one of the major airlines where they either give you free ski carriage or they allow you a bag weight which can include skis.
Lufthansa and Swiss allowed free ski carriage last year, British airways give you 23kg per bag per person free. And you'll probably buy a return flight for around GBP150pp or less, which involves a choice of daily flights mainly, flying out of Heathrow or London city (far better than gatwick, Luton etc) and the benefit of using a more reliable and professional body of people.

Put it like this, if you're flight gets cancelled, you'll get out onto another one, whereas easyjet or Ryanair will allow you to claim a refund but leave you to get yourself home.

I'm going DIY in march and am flying BA Heathrow to Lyon, although I could have flown easyjet or monarch into Grenoble for a cheaper headline price, and a slightly shorter transfer time the other end. But for me there's no comparison.

I use SWISS whenever possible now and usually pay no more than GBP110 return for a hassle free time, no worries about luggage, pleasant staff and chocolate before you land.

Holidays should be pleasurable!

I regularly take 2 sets of skis in one (single) ski bag. Never had a problem.

With Lufthansa your supposed to call them beforehand and advise them you are taking your skis and advise approximate weight. Free ski carriage for a 2min phone call works for me.

:D
