Ski Boot Bags

I have been looking for a ski boot bag for ages now that complies with airline regulations for hand luggage, ie 56x45x25cm. A pair of boots sat next to each other in a bag is too large, which is 99.9% of boot bags. Does anyone know of a bag that complies. Boots on top of each other in the bag will do it. Straps that can be used as a rucksack would be great. Frustratingly most online shops don't offer the bags dimensions. I have found one bag that possibly complies. There is a gap in the market. :?:

Re:Ski Boot Bags

This is something troubling me a little. We have conventional boot bags (salomon). We flew for the 1st time when skiing last April. I did measure the boot bags and they do slightly exceed the hand luggage measurements. However, we flew with KLM (Humberside - Amsterdam - Oslo) and they were completely relaxed both ways.

We are flying with Easyjet at New Year (Liverpool - Geneva) and imagine that they will be much more strict. We could pack our boots into our hold luggage but I'd be seriously cheesed off if they were lost, hence desire to carry on as hand luggage. I'm actually tempted to split the boots between boot bags and rucksacks (our children will be carrying a rucksack each but will be hiring boots). Therefore one boot per bag! Sounds a bit mad but I'm sure it would work.
Tony_H, thanks but my boots outweigh my socks etc and are slightly larger. I have got by in the past from a GBP7.99 rucksack from JJB sports, but its about to collapse. There must be a back pack out there that will comply?

Re:Ski Boot Bags

Brooksy, they might not be keen on the idea for whatever reason, but they don't weigh more than the allowance and if packed correctly are not larger than the allowance. There is nothing stipulated in their terms and conditions that you cant carry boots in your hand luggage either. If they're in a back pack they don't even know and the guy at x ray is looking for something a little more threatening. I have found a Lange bag, but its not in backpack format.

Re:Ski Boot Bags

I have a wheeled trolley mini-suitcase for my boots, which I bought from Profeet. I very carefully measured it to make sure it complied with the regulations, and discovered that the wheels stick out about 2cm more than is allowed.

The boots fit in it top to tail, as it were.

However, I have flown with EasyJet using this as hand luggage about 4 times (i.e. 8 flights) and I haven't been told off yet, or asked to put it in that basket measuring thing.

I suppose if I did get into trouble with it I'd have to use something like a large supermarket bag and put some stuff from my suitcase in that to make room for my boots, and collapse the boot bag and put it into my suitcase.

I find the wheels very handy when wheeling my boots around on the London underground. It's amazing how much they weigh!

And, long term, if it started to become a problem I would have to buy a small wheeled suitcase the correct size, put some of my stuff in that, and fit my boots into my suitcase (like Tony H said).

Re:Ski Boot Bags

Thanks AllyG. I'll have a look into that. Quite like not having to carry my boots around Duty Free. I think airline staff look out for boot bags and don't allow them, knowing that they don't comply. Top and tailing boots in other types of bags however seems to either not catch their eye or is acceptable.

Re:Ski Boot Bags

Yep you're right, just checked. Ski Boots are classed as sports equipment and EJ state, 'If ski boots are being carried without skis they can be accepted either within Your normal standard Hold Baggage allowance or as a sporting equipment item whichever is the more convenient option'. The more convenient option EJ is to let me put them in my hand luggage!!!! So despite them fitting in your hand baggage, they're not aloud. Golf shoes are ok though I note!

Re:Ski Boot Bags

We have had a problem carrying boots as hand luggage. They let us check in with them but when we got to the gate they took all boot bags off anyone trying to take them on as hand luggage and insisted they went in the hold.

When I questioned this I was told they were classed as offensive weapons and not allowed in the cabin. I know my feet can pong a bit after a day's skiing but I thought this was a bit extreme

I have never known of anyone clubbing a fellow passenger to death with a ski boot either but I guess it just goes to show that they make the rules up as they go along. I suppose if you can find a bag that doesn't look like a boot bag, you stand a better chance of getting them on as hand luggage but you take the risk.

We are driving to Tignes in January, no problem with my offensive boots on that journey

Re:Ski Boot Bags

I must say I hadn't realized I actually wasn't allowed to carry my ski boots as hand luggage. I thought the only problem I had was the wheels sticking out a tiny bit.

It's very strange because when they scan my boots they can obviously see they're ski boots. Maybe the airport security people don't mind ski boots but EasyJet do.

And perhaps the reason I haven't been told off at check in is because it doesn't look like a boot bag - it looks exactly like everyone else's mini- trolley suitcase.

Luckily I'm going to Tignes on the train, so that won't be a problem, but I am flying back. However, if my boots are confiscated on the way back I will have several months, at least, before I need them again which will hopefully give me time to recover them.

Felthorpe, did they charge you extra to put your ski boots in the hold?

Oh, and the most recent time I flew with EasyJet like this was at the end of April (2012), from Gatwick to Geneva and back again.

It certainly backs up the theory that if it doesn't look like a boot bag then no one will know. Its not like they search everyones bags for ski boots, otherwise known as highly offensive weapons!

Well, after reading through the discussion so far, I think I will put out boots in our main hold bags this time. I could do without the hassle at check in.

I dread to think how I would feel if they lost our bags though. My feet do not like hire boots at all.....

Re:Ski Boot Bags

To answer your questions:

No we weren't charged extra to put them in the hold. They would have had a riot on their hands if they had tried because the check in staff had happily let us through with them and there were laods of people in the same position as us. It was just the staff at the gate that were being difficult.

I have managed to take them on board as hand luggage on some flights but it is not guaranteed. It seems to depend on the staff on the day.

The security staff are completely separate from the airline staff and they operate different rules. They can probably tell the difference between a ski boot and an offensive weapon!

Re:Ski Boot Bags

There does seem to be quite a bit of confusion amongst airline staff over ski boots. How is a ski boot an offensive weapon, and a litre of Whisky purchased airside not classified the same? Who made the classification?

I have read of Ski Tourers wearing their boots onto planes, there is not much difference between a ski touring boot and a winter mountaineering boot. Where will they draw their imaginary line?
I was refused a pair of Moonboots in my hand baggage at check in at Bristol airport, proper soft squidgy Moonboots. I was much younger  I was obliged to sit on the floor and repack my main case, and subsequently got wet feet on arrival as I had no access to my winter boots, hey-ho.

Of course, there is money to be made from getting skiers to pay for hold luggage, however it's classified.

I have taken my ski boots as hand luggage in a backpack many times. The cost of my boots far outweighs the rest of my luggage, though mostly I travel with hand luggage only.
I do not wish to have a member of staff working for an airline, dictating what I can/can't put into my personal hand luggage, it's bordering on abusive. My carry-on bag meets current restrictions (depending on the airline). That should be enough.

It may be easier if I repeat:

Pack them in your case. You're usually allowed 20 kilos and with boots in your case, you can't seriously have more than 20 kilos in your bag?
If so, repack reminding yourself you're going skiing and not to fashion week in Milan.

Don't run the risk of problems at the airport, and the potential stress of worrying whether you'll be allowed them as hand luggage. Pack them in your hold case or check the boot bag in as my mate does - something I'd never do having seen them thrown about and coming off in pieces.

Re:Ski Boot Bags

I have had a go reading some of EasyJet's small print now, and Brooksy is quite right, it does say ski boots count as sports equipment and they should either go in the hold as part of your normal weight allowance or you should pay extra for them as sports equipment and then put them in the hold (with an extra weight allowance, which is 32Kg including your usual suitcase allowance).

Sports equipment

Sporting equipment can be carried in addition to Your Hold Baggage allowance. Sporting equipment is defined as:

Bicycles
Golf equipment (excluding golf shoes)
Skis (including boots and poles)
Snowboards
Surfboards
Wind surfers
Hang-gliders/paragliders
Sporting Firearms
Diving Equipment (Gas or air cylinders are not permitted)
Sporting Wheelchairs (unless this is one of the two items of mobility equipment per passenger)

If You wish to carry any of the above items You will be charged an additional non-refundable fee for each item carried. Simply select the 'Sports equipment' option when You book Your flights online. If Your item is not listed it must be carried as part of Your standard Hold Baggage allowance.

If ski boots are being carried without skis they can be accepted either within Your normal standard Hold Baggage allowance or as a sporting equipment item whichever is the more convenient option.

It doesn't actually say that ski boots are banned in your hand luggage, although I suppose it is implied.

However, under the fees section it also says that if you declare you have sports gear at the airport you will have to pay GBP35 at the airport, against GBP27 if you pre-booked it. So there isn't really a big difference:

You pay for	Baggage allowance
0 bags, 1 sporting item

total allowance 1 item @32kg total
this item must be a genuine sporting good as defined

1 bag, 1 sporting item

total allowance 2 items @ 32kg total
1 item must be a genuine sporting good as defined
You may distribute weight between items as desired

1bag, 2 sporting items

total allowance 3 items @ 44kg total
2 items must be a genuine sporting good as defined
You may distribute weight between items as desired

Sports equipment per flight
Currency	Per flight (when pre-paid)	Per flight (paid at the airport)
GBP	27.00	35.00

http://www.easyjet.com/en/fees_and_charges.html

A pair of boots sat next to each other in a bag is too large, which is 99.9% of boot bags. Does anyone know of a bag that complies. Boots on top of each other in the bag will do it. Straps that can be used as a rucksack would be great. Frustratingly most online shops don't offer the bags dimensions. I have found one bag that possibly complies. There is a gap in the market. :?:

Pack them in your suitcase that you check in and use your hand luggage allowance for other things like gloves, goggles, etc. you can't pack ski boots any better or safer than that.

You should buy something like this which has a split level design - boots in the bottom section and clothes in the top.
Re:Ski Boot Bags

I have always put my boots in the hold baggage. Having heard too many stories of people being refused them either at airport security or at the gate, I don't want to risk taking them as hand luggage.

Most airlines let you have either 1 or 2 hold bags per person, as long as combined they don't exceed the weight limit (usually 20kg). I always use my soft boot bag, but completely stuff the boots and surrounding the boots with socks, boxers, thermals, hats etc to protect them from the inevitable rough treatment from the baggage handlers.

That means I can then take a smaller bag as my second bag, since quite a bit of volume has been transferred into the boot bag in the shape of underwear!

Mostly I have flown on charter-type flights, e.g. Monarch, Thomson etc. The budget guys (Easyjet etc) I think charge per-bag, rather than a weight allowance to do with as you see fit, so of course YMMV.

Re:Ski Boot Bags

So if you own a double ski bag you could put 1 pair of skis and your boots in it + 1 hold bag with a combined weight of 32Kg. Thats it in a nutshell. Otherwise its boots in your hold bag with a crusty change of clothes!!! If anyone is interested in the boot bag rucksack option this one meets the hand baggage size allowance - http://www.ldmountaincentre.com/ski-c26/luggage-c46/ski-bags-c183/go-to-ski-gear-bag-p3438.
Its a bit pricey but will do the job.
Re:Ski Boot Bags

Here we go again.....

Right. Some airlines allow you to carry sports equipment free as long as it doesn't exceed the max baggage allowance. For example, British airways, Lufthansa and Swiss.

Others charge extra for sports baggage on top of the regular 15, 20 or 23kg, subject to a max limit on weight. For example Thomson who now set a 15kg limit on ski bags in addition to the 15/20kg checked baggage limit.

Easy jet and Ryanair are a different kettle of fish and seemingly will only let you take a single pair of skis as sports equipment and i do know stories of bags being opened and items being refused.

You really need to check with each individual airline. However as many of travel on chartered flights for ski trips, the simple rule is ski bags are extra and you can pretty much put what you want inside them provided it does not exceed the stated weight limit ie 15kg which is in addition to the checked baggage allowance. In addition you are allowed carry on luggage subject often to a 5 or 10kg limit. Ski carriage on charter flights is normally GBP35 or so. Therefore for GBP35 extra you can take a total of 35kg checked in plus hand luggage.

Please someone tell me that's not enough for a weeks skiing ........?????

I'm with Tony H on this. I have a large ski holdall from Snow + Rock which has separate compartments for boots, so no room for other kit is lost. In the hold they go and no worries over hand luggage etc. Last year, this large bag including boots plus skis was well inside the EasyJet allowance of 32kg.

If it were to be delayed or go missing in transit, I'm up the shute anyway and hiring or buying some new boots would go alongside begging, stealing or borrowing a complete set of kit.

there you go, confirmation that easyet have a weight limit of 20kg checked in baggage plus 12kg ski bag or 32kg combined as LOTA states.

Your 2nd comment is right on the mark. Its pointless suggesting you're making a mistake packing your boots as your bag may go missing. Whilst mine did, it wasn't just boots, it was literally everything. I was actually more upset about not having clean underpants

Thank you, Tony. Decent travel insurance permits you to buy or hire the necessities to enjoy your holiday and survive until the bag turns up.

As we are in danger of Tony_H having heart failure over this subject I'll let it rest, no wiser on the trials and tribulations of flying EasyJet - if only they were that Easy. I 'll probably run the risk with my GBP7.99 JJB sports rucksack with a bit of duck tape wrapped around. Looking forward to 2013 already when we can raise this subject once more - bon ski !

Crikey, I hadn't realised something so simple could get so complicated.

I bought my bag in 1983, it's still going strong, never had a spot of bother with it on any flight.

The '80's luminous pink writing matched my luminous yellow & pink socks of the era (remember those?) ahhhh... The bag's outlasted the socks by a good 28 years!

at bhx earlier this year flying with thompson and a lad was overweight for his checked luggage. he took out his ski boots - bag now underweight so checked in ok and he walked through the security checks carrying a ski boot in each hand and still got on the plane with them in his hands!!
Rules or no rules?
i always put my boots in my checked bag and cram a lot into my rucksack i use for hand luggage. and if my case goes missing all my ski clothing is with the boots any way.
