Anyone scared of chair lifts?

Does anyone share my fear/borderline phobia of chair lifts?
If so, how do you get over it?
I sing to myself with my eyes shut, but that only works if I am on a chair with someone I know that will nudge me at the right time to open my eyes and get off...

Are you sure skiing is the right recreational sport for you, Hun?

Really not being mean but for me, being on the chairlift is a time to regroup and just enjoy being on a mountain...

Now, getting off the other end and sliding down a precipice on two planks of plastic is another matter...

THOSE people are crazy.

I'm not phobic but I avoid them when I can as they exacerbate an injury of mine. Ski in scandinavia! It's more usual to find t-bars than chairs. -)

good point, but I do love skiing really and the chair lift is a means to a (hopefully) good end. Shame they aren't a few feet nearer the ground tho :)

T-bars?!? God, no! Loathe the things! Was last on them at the Zermatt glacier and battled long and hard with the bloke on the other side....

Shame he was Mr P, but you can't win 'em all :0)

Has anything happened to set this off, for example stuck on one after the lift broke down, is it the height, the speed, the openness. Are you better with the canopy down for those chairs that have them.
Are you ok in gondolas or is it just chair lifts? What you like with other modes of transport like planes trains and automobiles?

The worst with this one is you know you have to do it again to get back. It was windy when I was on it. I enjoyed it my sister hated it!

ah thanks John, it is all a theme. I hate heights and flying but if you want to enjoy certain things in life you have to get on with it so I do.
I almost enjoyed the heated seat chair lifts with the lid down, now if they were all like that I might even manage the Val d'Isere one!!!

I'm not really expecting a solution, just curious to see what others experience is :)
I'll carry on keeping my eyes shut and sneaking the odd peak as I go up....

Nothing wrong with T-bars used my first last year in St Anton ....... did not really cause any problems apart from being in Austria :wink:

My problem with chair lift is getting off! I am tall and some lift operators seem to build up the dismount area so my knees are raise up and I can't get any leverage...especially if I am on the inside end of a 4 man one

My problem is getting off next to Mrs W with her great wide clog hopping skis.

I LOVE this lift! One of my favourite ski areas too.

Mr Nelly is tall (I'm hardly a dwarf at 5 10) and struggles to get his knees under the bar and rest his tired legs sometimes. Bless him.

I think it's reasonable to have concerns about chairlifts, especially the detachable ones as they rely on springs to hold the chairs on the rope.

Even though there are safety mechanisms in place to prevent chairs that are not properly attached from leaving the station, they have been known to fall off.

Mr allylim and son should be scared of lifts in general. Mr allylims first encounter with a tee bar caused both pain and laughter (on my part) when he tried to use it like a button tow. One of my sons first encounters with a chair lift left him face down in the snow below the chair luckly only his pride hurt. So all tows are dangerous to some.

Nellie, I do prefer my feet on terra firma given the choice, altho that said, in the context of my (lack of) skiing ability, sitting on a chair lift might actually be the safer option :D

I actually really enjoy chair lifts. Love sitting back and enjoying the view. My wife not so keen. She hates it when the lift suddenly stops and the chairs bounce up and down. I usually guffaw loudly when that happens...... :P

Chair lifts are the chance for a break and a good look round. You can often spot some snow you're going to ski from up on the lift.

Stewart Dowling who posts on here and is a mate of mine also has a phobia of ski lifts. He says he's ok with them now but I'm not convinced. I think its chairs he hates most and won't ski certain pistes because of the lift access to it.

I love chair lifts, they are so easy getting on and off, and no messing about with taking skis off etc. Liked them from day one - even as a complete beginner they made me feel like an expert:)

I think I posted "That I know" .....Anyway Stewart is a good guy but a bit of a whoos when it comes to chair lifts 8)
