Your most scenic ski resort

Hello to all,

After our last ski trip to 3 Valleys in March we realise that it might not be possible to find another ski area with such a variety of runs and efficient lift system.

However as we do appreciate the scenery while skiing we hope to find resorts with prettier views.

So far our favourite in this respect is Zermatt/Cervinia with beautiful views of Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and glaciers.

Would you please share your experience from the most scenic resort/skiing area you visited?

This is a shot of the Jordon Quad lift at Sunday River, Maine from late February 2012. Great resort, great people and great ski conditions !!

Great thread and tough question.
I love the views of the frozen lake you get in Are Sweden but love the choc box prettiness of Maria Alm Austria.
Seems to me if it has snow on it it's a decent view, right?

Not sure how to answer this but thought I would add my two pennorth.

Scenic seems really subjective. I am not bothered by some of the resorts that other view as ugly - I find the Tignes bowl resorts of Lavachet, le Lac and Val Claret majestic, yes even the architecture!!

What does it for me are the high level views - vistas across to the horizon of white.....
Majestic peaks in the distance....
That sort of thing.

What doesn't do it for me is brownerie - that's greenerie before the grass grows :mrgreen:

I don't really find resorts with a bit of snow above miles and miles of snow free lowlands scenic, no matter how chocolate boxie the buildings are.

Summer in the mountains is different, however!

Murren - the backdrop of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau takes some beating added to the Schilthorn, plus a really attractive village.

And I like the 360 degree panorama from the Weisshorn at Arosa - magnificent - plus the journey from Chur railway station to Arosa is something to behold.

Last season, I found the views from the Big 3 viewing points above Solden to be breathtaking.

I could go on...

Have skied in Zermatt and it is dramatic scenery, but the Dolomites are truly breathtaking and the only ski area which has actually made me stop in mid-descent because the scenery just had to be admired for a few minutes. Particularly enjoyed the Madonna/Folgarida/Marilleva area.

I cant agree with this more. This is one of the things that puts me off low lying resorts as i just love being up above the clouds. IMHO there is nothing worse than a thin strip of white running through green/brownerie.

OldAndy and Snapzzz,

We too like white mountains in a winter!
However every now and then we come across awe inspiring views.
Be it a deep steep valley below ski line or high craggy peaks bathing in the sun that make particular area extra special.

For this reasons as much as we enjoyed skiing 3 Valleys we found views around Zermatt/Cervinia and Verbier that extra special.

And we have not been yet to Jungfrau Region or Dolomites that are reportedly the most scenic.
It might change this season though:)

Anyway, I love Val D'Isere for lots of reasons, I love the mountains all year round but all look stunning with snow :)

The Dolomites!
From an aesthetics point of view, nowhere else I have been comes close. Gonna get a bit controversial here, but compared to the Dollies, the rest are 'just' mountains.

Would you be able to pick a resort or two within Dolomites as your favourite for views?
i think it is a bit unfair on other ski areas as Dolomites are so vast and encompass so many resorts?

Hi Gaccy,

I am lucky to have skied in Whistler. The views, particularly towards a lake are very nice.
However as the mountains are lower than Alps or Dolomites, IMHO scenery is not quite as beautiful or dramatic.

Lake Tahoe, it's quite surreal standing at the top of the lift system on the Nevada side, looking down on the massive Lake, and then across the Desert towards Reno :D

Not been to Maddonna in the winter (although the last September that we drove there it was pretty snowy) but the Dolomites are stunning.

If you were to pin me down to a single resort then I suppose it would be Cortina d'Ampezzo. Ve-eh-ry ni-ii-ce. I've never stayed there, (don't think I'd want to) but I've driven through en route to the Val di Fassa resorts. As well as being very picturesque in it's own right, it's very handily situated for some of the most stunning Dolomite scenery such as Cinque Torri and Tofana. Some of the views from the Marmolada, a bit further towards Arabba, are also pretty mind-blowing.

If you were to pin me down to a single resort then I suppose it would be Cortina d'Ampezzo. Ve-eh-ry ni-ii-ce. I've never stayed there, (don't think I'd want to) but I've driven through en route to the Val di Fassa resorts. As well as being very picturesque in it's own right, it's very handily situated for some of the most stunning Dolomite scenery such as Cinque Torri and Tofana. For a slightly more unusual 'scenic'. You could include the resort of le tour, above argentiere, in the Chamonix valley. The view of the aosta dam is spectacular! Probably a seperate list of unusual views.

As Bandit has mentioned your most scenic ski resort is very personal, I find beauty in many alpine areas I have been to both summer and winter.

I can mention many, the Aravis, top of mottolino looking towards Bormio & Stelvio, views from Monte Moro towards the Monte Rosa I could continue but I'm bored .......

My vote also goes to Zermatt. Jungfrau is also spectacular but in Zermatt you feel completely surrounded by impressive mountains, valleys, glaciers etc.

Some other resorts have great views but limited in scale or extent. This photo below is at the Avoriaz/Champery border was worth a stop for a drink of two!

No Saas fee has never been on my to do list, I was in a tiny resort many years ago called Macugnaga (Italy).
