Flying with Swissair - Ski baggage

I am sure one of you will know the answer to this. I am flying Heathrow to Geneva next Saturday with Swiss Air- fisrt time with them rather than Easy Jet as the latter were expensive but Swiss Air is only GBP120 return and this inclues 23 kg baggage allowance and on-board coffee! The question is: do I have to pay for skis? Looking at their web site is seems to suggest they are free. If so, this is a big saving. If they are free, are they a part of my 23kg allowance? As an aside, still looking like there is no fresh snow in Portes Du Soleil on the web cams, but I am sure it is coming .....

Hi Bakewell Blue.

Never actually travelled with Swiss Air, but I am aware of the claim for free ski carriage. Their website does not seem to fully explain if it is included in your allowance, or as it is ski equipment if it is an additional 15kg.

Look at their page (url below), and if nobody can answer you by tomorrow, I suggest that you use the listed numbers and phone them to find out.

I've never flown with Swiss Air (now defunct) but I've been with Swiss many, many time!

Skis are taken free of charge on Swiss and do not form part of the 23kg baggage allowance. Good news, all round!

You also get a small bar of chocolate! :lol:

According to the link to the Swiss website given by Far Queue, I rather think it's not just the skis that are carried free but the whole set of ski equipment:

Winter sports equipment
A or B
A: 1 helmet, 1 pair of ski boots, 1 pair of ski sticks, 1 pair of skis
B: 1 snowboard, 1 pair of snowboard boots

It sounds like a truly excellent deal to me :D

But I think if it was me I'd print it out and take it with me - just in case!

If you are a Hillfrog, you don't get an allowance for a Helmet???

I don't have first hand experience but I do know that when the Bristol uni ski team came out to Italy to train for a week they flew with Swiss air via Munich because of the ski carriage benefits-they were each carrying 2or3 sets and they were free

Thanks everyone (and you are right, it is now Swiss). I called them yesterday to check and they confirmed that this is indeed an excellent deal. 23 kg luggage plus a full ski kit (or boarder's kit). And coffee, snack and a chocolate. All for GBP120! OK, you have to go from Heathrow or London City (not ideal from the Midlands, but in the middle of the night it should be OK). I have always flown with Easy Jet, but I may be reconsidering - skis at GBP50, plus baggage costs make Easy Jet less attractive than Swiss.

That's a good deal :D When I priced up a single from GVA to LHR recently it was around 1100chf :shock:

I priced a return flight with them, just now, out on 10th March and back on 17th - not that I can actually go of course - :cry: and it was GBP144 London Heathrow to Geneva economy saver.

I am always impressed at what a fountain of knowledge this forum can be, when we set our minds to it :D

If no-one actually knows the answer to a particular question someone will know how to FIND the answer :lol:

The flight I wanted is now cheaper at 1085fr for the cheapest seat! If I booked a return however it drops to a petite 314fr. Mind you some airlines charge extra if you are a no-show for a return flight )

Have recently put together an article comparing a number of airlines for the baggage they charge on a European return flight, including both standard baggage and ski/snowboard charges.

Perhaps no surprises that Ryanair topped the table as most expensive. Swiss Air was one of a few Airlines that have no charges at all for either normal or ski baggage.

I hadnt included Aer Lingus on my comparison mentioned above. I don't think they fly from UK to ski destinations. They do from Dublin and for these flights the cost of baggage on a return flight would be Euro90

2 x Euro15 for hold baggage
2 x Euro30 for ski baggage

For reference that's alot less than Ryanair GBP150, and a little more than Easyjet GBP74

I much prefer Swiss to any of the other airlines - and it generally works out cheaper with them than EasyJet or the horror show that is Ryan air. They also have plenty of flights each day from City, Heathrow and Birmingham, so you can tailor your travel arrangements perfectly if arranging a shorter or non-weekend to weekend ski trip.

BTW if anyone can fly from London, City airport is fantastic. Very efficient, stupidly quick to come through. Its never busy either. Some well priced flights to ski airports.
