Dongles

1 month contract dongle GBP21 whilst away or pay in hotel
(they charge !) Which is the better idea and yes I know I should be able to live without the dreaded internet. :D

Re:Dongles

Well, my area of expertise.

Obviously all this depends on hotel charges, any idea?

But, the hotel will be the better option. However your GBP21 dongle is that a UK dongle? If so you will get hit for huge roaming bill. There are key questions here

- how much do hotel charge?
- how much are you likely to be online
- is the dongle UK?
- can you use your phone instead and buy boosters?

Can answer more accurate then

Icy

Re:Dongles

If you are only looking to get a one month dongle, why not look into getting one from a telecoms supplier in the country you are going to. You will not get hit with the roaming charges then.

However, subject to the Hotel charges, that would probably be your best option.

Finally, I was pleasantly surprised to find free wifi zones in Kitzbuhel earlier this season, you should check where you are going to see if any are available. Some bars use it to draw customers.

Re:Dongles

Dongle from country of origin, or the local bar with free wi-fi. Might cost more in beer in the long run, but that's not wasted money!

All US hotels, condos, and chalets have free wifi. Very few exceptions.

Re:Dongles

If you have a smartphone, most UK operators now do a deal on roaming data for travelling. Smartphone should be OK for just email and FB.

Uh oh. OK, I do not want to seem patronising or sexist here, but given the above comment, I should now make sure you are aware how big bills can be when using smartphones abroad and not knowing exactly what the phone is up to.

Phone companies have in recent times introduced a cap on roaming data to prevent the GBP0000's size bills which some people did manage to run up (admittedly they were extreme), but you need to be aware that if you sign up to a roaming deal, the cap may be lifted on your phone.

Please ensure that your daughter shows you what is going on, and ideally install a monitoring app which you know how to use so you can check on what you or your phone have been up to.

I use Onavo on my Android based phone. It is capable of stopping the phone from using data at a pre set limit. So if you buy a 30mb deal for a month, set the app to stop the phone at 29mb of use, you then have a tiny bit left for emergencies.

Re:Dongles

Your likely to pick up free wifi if your staying near the resort but if your away from the bars you will struggle unless your hotel has one, obviously

Recently in Portugal I was able to get paid Wifi for Euro12 for 6 days, if I was with BT it would have been free.
