Had a phone call from travel agent telling me our flight from Manchester to flaine on Saturday 17th march has been cancelled. She said the only other flight available was from gatwick and with that said if you can't make it we can have our money back!!!!!! I am amazed that they can get away with shoddy treatment if I had tried to cancel with two weeks notice I don't think I would have got far.

Crystal are advertising holidays to Flaine on that date from Manchester. Get your money back and book elsewhere.

This late cancellation should entitle you to Compensation, check the small print closely.

Snapzzz has the right idea, you might even save some money. Don't delay!

Exactly, this could actually work in your favour. Get your GBPGBPGBP back and get searching for a last min that will fly from the North (Manc, Leeds, West Mid, Birm)

I'd recommend using Skyscanner.net as a quick way to see most of the available flights. It's not 100% spot on all the time but the quickest way to get flight info I've found.

Unbelievable...who were you supposed to be flying with? Was it a package you booked or separate elements? Defo seek compensation I would say!!

Ditto the comment on Skyscanner, love this sire and use it a lot for getting ideas on costs for any flight only bookings we're looking at.

My guess is that this was a holiday booked where the company were using scheduled flights with a budget airline over which they have no control.
I can see a company like TUI cancelling a charter flight, surely that would screw up 100's of package holidays.

Your pilot is brand new, in fact she only left flight school last week. Awesome.

Panic not. Its not a turbo prop. Its a Fokker 100. I already checked the seating plan. They're the ones with a history of the undercarriage failing so nothing to worry about :shock:

Back on topic (unusual for me I know) - the same thing happened to me once.

We were booked with Airtours for a holiday in Obergurgl flying from Gatwick and about a month before we were due to go they phoned me and said there weren't enough people booked on the Gatwick plane to make it worth their while and they were cancelling that flight and transferring all the passengers to a Manchester flight.

They offered me the choice of flying from Manchester or my money back (because it counts as a major change to the holiday details and according to their contract that meant we could have our money back).

I took the money and re-booked straightaway with First Choice who had a hotel opposite the original one and luckily for about the same price (and in fact it turned out to be a better hotel so we never lost out at all). I seem to remember they gave me time to make up my mind and check the availability of another holiday before I said I'd take the money.

So, I can understand how these things happen to travel companies but I think 2 weeks wasn't enough notice in your case because it might have been too late to buy another similar holiday. Did they give you time to choose between a refund or going from Gatwick instead of Manchester?

Thanks everybody for replies, TA spent couple of hrs trying to get flights from m/c but couldn,t find anything. Other destinations with m/c flight took us out of our budget. Asked about compen. She almost laughed, said if you look in the small print!!!!! The final insult was telling us if we took a refund she would be unable to refund the sum they charged us for paying with a credit credit card think it was about GBP40......stuffed all round.

I think i would be in touch with my credit card company and ask them to apply a chargeback to the agent. Don't forget they to are equally responsible for the holiday. If they cannot supply the holiday you paid for then they have to give you ALL the money back.

So, are you going to take the flight from Gatwick? I'm sure you don't want to take the refund and cancel the holiday, because I certainly wouldn't :shock:

And if you can't buy another holiday for the same sort of price then you haven't really got any other options.

I'd like to know who the Tour Op is, I'd like to avoid them because of their T's & C's.

Do talk to your C/C company. The Tour Operator is in breach of Contract.
Also get in touch with Trading Standards Consumer Direct, who have a useful online service.

I'd be tempted to look for a flight unpackaged and do your own thing, using the local Tourist Office to find you accom.

Just checked my tour ops policy...GBP40 compensation/per person within 2-4 weeks cancellation. Do look in the small print, change of airport is def "significant change".

Have you tried calling other tour ops to see if they have flight only options..they might if they need to get bums on seats.

What's your budget? I'm sure the lovely people on here can guide you to a good deal. My Tour op sent an offer GBP770 half board chalet hotel for La Plagne on those dates (and out of Manchester).

Can't go from gatwick, would mean journey up night before stay over. Asked if they would shuttle us, big fat no. We booked the complete package with neilson the flights were with Thompson. Asked what would happen to hotel accom was told it would just be cancelled by Neilsons Will check tour op policy.

Bandit, thank you so much for being kind enough to send me the link. I will print off and go back to Co op travel tomorrow. Quite disappointed with TA although they looked to rebook us now feel they did not try to look after our interests, or am I being naive.

Just checked crystal and they still have holidays to flaine from Manchester.
Could you use crystal for the flights and transfer and speak to the accommodation you were going to stay at and book direct.

There are last minute bargains coming up now for that date.
e.g. Igluski has Sunday 18th March Manchester to Geneva, catered chalet in Tignes Le Lac 50m from piste reduced to GBP513 pp from GBP878 pp for 4 people holiday id 32881026.

I think, if it was me, I'd phone around the other travel agents like Smartski etc. have suggested, and see what they have available for your budget and number of people going from Manchester, book it if you find something suitable and then get your refund.

You may well find something much better than you had originally for the same price, or less, if you're prepared to be flexible and go to a different resort or go on Sunday or whatever.

And if you told us what you were looking for - like beginners slopes/nightlife etc. and the budget and how many people I'm sure we'd all have a look and come up with some suggestions for you :D
