Flying with Thompson - What have luggage checks been like lately?

Anyone flown with Thompson from Manchester lately can tell me what the luggage checks were like. Our hand luggage normally weighs 10kg and is 23cm wide (OK for most airlines). Thompson say 20 cm and 5kg. Has anyone got any comments on their recent experiences of having their hand luggage checked or not check as the case maybe?

good call! I am travelling from Manchester next week myself - can anyone give us some intel? 20kgs is not a lot when your boots are part of the allowance.

Gatwick, Thomson, January - had my hand baggage weighed and told off for 6.5kg this winter(5kg allowance).
First time I've had hand baggage weighed !!

Sign of things to come perhaps?

Can't say I blame the airline after seeing the size of some peoples hand luggage - bigger than my hold bag!!!

No checks on hand luggage but ski bag weighed.
Ski bags can be 15kg but mine was 16kg, she just looked at me and waved me on.

No, she just asked if i had hand luggage and i turned and showed her the rucksack on my back....it wasn't very big.
We flew from East Midlands.

From the Thomson website:

Ski luggage allowance

Each customer is entitled to a check-in allowance of up to 20kg baggage and a maximum 5kg for hand baggage (10kg for infants) Multiple bags permitted.

Ski carriage allowance - Weight allowance of 15kg. Boots part of hold luggage allowance. Ski carriage charge of GBP35 applies.

(please note customers who have hold luggage and ski carriage allowance no single item of baggage can exceed 25kg)

Last few flights I have had with Thomson they have weighed all bags including hand baggage. They will ask you to show what you're taking on with you, and possibly weigh it as well.
Youre best sticking to the regs and playing it safe as it seems common now for them to check.
At least now they have one uniform ski baggage policy. 15kg is actually very generous and allows me to pack my ski bag with all my ski clothing, as I always have done before any policy was brought in to place.
Luggage inc ski boots at 20kg is also plenty for a weeks skiing.

Think it depends on who checks you in, i flew with them a couple of weeks ago from manchester to turin...my case was 26kg, boardbag 28kg an they didnt bother weighin my hand luggage

I know we've had this discussion before and it's always better to stick to the rules but it does seem to be down to the check in person and what mood they're in/how much of a jobsworth they are as to whether they are bothered with their guidelines.

And I've said this before too; one year we got away with being over the limit and having our ski bags rammed with clothes etc, the people on the next desk checking in were named and shamed when they dared to have one piece of clothing in their board bag.

Maybe it's because they were boarders?

I couldn't agree more! A recent Thompson flight check-in which we were quite concerned about was no problem at all and yet a couple of weeks later at a Monarch check-in which we were quite relaxed about, they were really fussy.

What really puzzles me though is that once I have passed through check-in and security, I seem to be allowed to buy anything in the shops and then take it onto the plane with no further checks?

i cetainly got away with it , the lovely lady even stuck a 'heavy' sticker on each bag...and she checked us into the seats with extra leg room...must have been my winning smile!!

to be fair though some of the other lads were underweight on the baggage front an i would have been prepared to argue my case that they people before and after in the queue were rather large and presumably weighed a hell of a lot more than my excess...but thats another debate

If it was me I'd just be happy I still had any hair left to use straighteners/hairbrush/hair dryers on :wink:

I find bobbles actually enhance the bad hair scenario, but at least then you've got an excuse. Just keep it on.

I'm not suggesting that you do this of course, but once they have weighed your hand luggage, there is nothing to stop you adding items to it. So if you check in one at a time, one person could check in with their 5 Kg hand luggage while the other person waits with heavier items, and then you just reverse the roles!

So how come you can buy a mountain of shopping on the other side? There's a huge array of shops at most airports these days, you could buy your entire wardrobe before you got on the plane.

Sadly no ski shops.

Just to say ...

Hand luggage wasn't checked at all. Wasn't asked how many skis in ski box. Either at Manchester or Geneva.

Just make sure hand luggage fits in Manchester Airport size checkers. Staff say the Thompson specific size checkers in terminal 2 aren't used any more.
