Salapets

Has anyone got any recommendations for where to get/order a pair of skiing trousers? I'm heading off skiing this Easter for the first time in a few years and can't remember where I got them from before - so any suggestions would be welcome!! Also, any tips on which type are the best etc would also be really good :-)

Outdoor stores - those retail outlet places are full of them.
You should get some in the sales soon.
Or google salopettes - you'll find tons of sites
Or try TK Maxx

Re:Salapets

I had some Marmot sallos that were three years old, but had only been used about twenty times. The goretex totally delaminated from the butt area. Could have been sliding on my butt after falls on hard snow that caused it, but you would think that's usual wear and tear.

Re:Salapets

You lot must be really harsh on your clothes! I have a Dare2be ski jacket that I love, bought 5 years ago in Austria on our first trip. It's got just as many features as the more expensive brands, and I love it. Still looks good, despite being worn throughout the winter in the UK and one ski trip per year for the last 5 years. Me and Mr Allie bought salopettes in a sale in Mountain Warehouse - think they're both Trespass brand, didn't cost more than 50 quid and are still going strong, also after 5 years.

Re:Salapets

I got some North Face sallos online for GBP75 (half price) and they are the perfect fit and very hard wearing. Not massively insulated but I wear thermals under them if need be.

I got some Colombia ones in TK Maxx a few years ago for GBP30 and they were excellent but TK dont stock Colombia any more, just Trespass and D2B mainly, neither of which I rate particularly.

The major retailers like EB and SnR are probably the best bet for better choice.

I've had quite a bit of it over the years now, and currently ski in a North Face outer shell, or a different softshell, and have a pair of North Face sallos as well. I think its well made, good quality, long lasting and fashion conscious. They do, of course, also do a lot of mid range stuff which you see people using as all weather jackets back here in the UK - lots of black waterproofs etc, but again decent quality.

Its also not cheap to buy, whereas the 2 other brands you mentioned are.

Personally, I think North Face in the main is a good buy. Not the cheapest, but look at stuff like Dare2B, Trespass or 5 Seasons if you want cheap and not so good quality. I'd buy North Face gear again and again personally.

Have you had particular bad experience with some of their stuff?
Re:Salapets

+1 for North Face sallos - I've skied in a pair of Bonfire snowboard trousers for the last 7 years which still have plenty of life in them but are now miles too big. So this year I went mad and bought myself a pair of North Face sallos - GBP110 in the sale!! But worth it - at -15 I could squeeze a pair of longjohns underneath too so I was warm.

Really pleased with them and as I am no dedicated follower of fashion I intend to get my money's worth over the next 10 years....assuming they still fit!

Now I just need a jacket...I started wearing Husband's spare jacket 8 years ago as a stop gap and I'm still wearing it - I've never actually got round to buying myself one.

After recently spending well into three figures on my first pair of owned ski boots (complete with liners, orthotics etc) I was contacted by a friend who told me she had just found a pair of perfect ski boots, worn once, in a charity shop for GBP45 ! Resemblances between myself and an unwell colourful ornithological specimen were noticed.

Well done Ian :D

I think charity shops do a great job of recycling, plus the profit goes to some worthy cause or other.
Re:Salapets

Salopettes take more of a bashing than a jacket - get nicked by your edges, the boot zips get bashed and take a bit of a pounding when you wipe out at speed. Wouldn't advocate paying big bucks for them for this reason.
Jackets take less trauma so by all means buy one you like assuming it's breathable, waterproof and warm enough.

look a the stuff is it made from goretex or other heavy duty waterpfoof beathable material. Are the seams taped. If it says snow proof - interpret that as meaning it won't let frozen water through but when it melts you're going to get wet! Are the zips robust?

Beyond a certain price you are paying for a brand label rather than better function. I know some of you will have convinced yourselves that your overpriced Spider gear has to be better (presumably because it has a thousand and one seams to let the rain in) because it cost more or that your hyperpriced Kjuss gear is wonderful because it looks like a 1970's East German track suite.

Incidentally I heard that the relaunched Nevica brand is owned by the same manufacuter as Keilly.

Re:Salapets

I have to confess that having had a good look around, I eventually bought quite expensive gear but in saying that, it has lasted really well.

I went for an E+O jacket several years ago because I liked the colour.... I know, I know, that's not a good reason to buy a ski jacket (it's also a British make). However it has come up trumps because it still looks like new and keeps me warm and dry in all weathers. You also can't miss me because it is the sort of lime green that really sticks out against the snow. I have seen other makes that have tried to recreate this colour but the E+O version is just awesome. My OH says he can spot me coming down the slopes miles away in it. Last year in Belle Plagne a nice lady asked me if it was this seasons, as she really liked it. Don't know what I am going to do when I eventually wear it out?

Having bought the jacket I had to have the salopettes too. Again, not cheap but fit like a glove and so warm. You will be pleased to note that I chose black this time (otherwise I would look like a skiing lime).

Have I done enough girlie wibbling yet?

Did I tell you about my new Hestra gloves?
They are white leather
With black bits too.

But if it's too warm next week they won't be comfy

But I can swap in some old liners that are quite thin

The old army ones? Everywhere seems to be selling those at the minute.

I got my new gloves delivered today. I had been looking at white leather ones, but played safe and went for black leather in the end. Excellent quality, and 66% off at GBP35 plus delivery.
Surprised myself by buying Surfanic.
