where to put my go pro

I've just bought myself a go pro - i have the helmet accessories but I have heard that its best to put on the side of your helmet or use an extension arm, that the helmet mount sucks for technique analysis to use a chest strap and then I just read a post about attaching it to your ski pole. Anyone have any advice?

Re:where to put my go pro

I quite like the results from the chest harness. The pole mount also gives a very interesting result but I wouldn't want to spend too much time waving a pole around whilst trying to ski.

There are loads of vids on youtube providing various viewpoints - snapzzz has uploaded a few, I've uploaded one from the chest harness perspective.

Re:where to put my go pro

Not got one myself, but looking at some of the videos that have been posted the best result for 'audience viewing' seems to be when the camera position is varied around a bit. It's good to get different perspectives.

Re:where to put my go pro

My hubby has just bought one of those retractable walking sticks to attach his.
His excuse - lightweight & easy to pack
Apparently I can then use it when I get old and infirm.
Me thinks he will be skiing on his own this holiday!

Re:where to put my go pro

The helmet mount gives a pretty boring POV and will turn off most viewers in minutes, the key is variation.

I used these positions:

Front of helmet.
Front of helmet but backwards facing (films face or downwards)
Boot mounted forwards
Boot mounted rear
Ski pole mounted.

There are threads here that explain things further and example videos.

http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/11764.page

http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/11526.page

http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/12053.page

If you want technique analysis then its going to be pretty hard to achieve that if you are filming yourself. The only real way to get footage that can give you any real idea of how how you are truly doing is to get someone else to film you.
With the go pro you will have to use a pole mount to get in your whole body and then your technique is gonna go out the window as skiing with a camera on a pole at arms length is pretty awkward.
