Re:Preventing skis being stolen

Sorry to hear about your skis mate, im sure youre gutted.
I have a lock which is handy to carry in your pocket, wrap it round the skis, secure to a ski stand/post anything really and tighten it, punch in your code..probably takes an extra 30seconds and cost me about a tenner. I mean realistically you could cut the cable...but its enough to put people off (plus the fact its a very public place and youd probably get caught by someone)
Last year one of our group actually got very low grade rental skis stolen last season (luckily the rental shop didnt charge because they were pretty much done) she was female haha i guess that helped her case.

Re:Preventing skis being stolen

I also use a chain but have heard of people who swop a ski with someone else in the group and placing them away from each other during lunch after all who would nick a mismatched pair of skis

Re:Preventing skis being stolen

Two contexts for safe skis.

The first if skiing alone is as suggested by many is buy a ski lock! Now if your skis are in the "fine ski range" ie World Cup type even a cable will not stop a determined thief!

If skiing with a group always place ski in sight of group and always have someone watch skis! The worst place to place skis is where everyone does! Keep you skis away from herd! Isolated, alone near fence, tree, lift etc,,,, Anyone coming near skis will stand out from crowd !

90% of ski theft is the "snatch and grab " technique! That is,,thief goes by skis to determine quality, type and length. On second pass ,,without stopping picks up skis and continues on way !

I have a personal method since I have several skis to evaluate in one day! I have a thin 2 meter metal high grade wire very much like a piano wire! On each end I have a lope for lock! This thin wire can go in ski brake area and thus three pairs of ski can be locked! Taped to wire is a "personal protection warning system" many women have in their purses! Pull wire,,,,a very loud wailing sound is produced"
Yes it has saved my skis many times and reaction from thief is "magical" !
Hope this helps you all.

Re:Preventing skis being stolen

Every trip I've been on for the last 4 years I've heard of at least 1 story where either a board or skis have gone missing.... This isn't unusual now at all for me to hear this.

I'm sorry you had them taken, I hope your insured.... However as other said and I totally agree, if the theirs are looking it doesn't matter what you do, there going to take them, simple as!

Because of this I never leave my skis alone. If I can't sit with them either by my side or at least sit facing them then I won't stop, I'd find somewhere that I can keep them safe.... I hate thieves and I honestly can't wait for the day I see someone trying to take mine ....

Re:Preventing skis being stolen

I ski in Switzerland mostly so (touch wood)it almost never happens here but I know it's fairly common in France. Last time we went to Chamonix my friend had her board stolen. Using lock should help, also separating skis if you ski in the group. And remember where you leave your skis.

Re:Preventing skis being stolen

It amazes me that people still go on about this. Where else in life would you leave expensive goods laying about unsecured?
Yes it's a shame that you can't but that's life, deal with it.
Would you go in a restaurant in the uk and leave your bike outside unlocked or your car keys in the ignition?

Either sit outside and place your skis within sight, go inside but lock them up or take a picnic.

Re:Preventing skis being stolen

Slightly off topic but I wonder how difficult it would be to embed an RFID into every new pair of Skis?

If each ski-lift then had a scanner in it then it would be next to impossible to use stolen skis. If the demand for stolen skis goes away then so do the thieves! With skis costing hundreds and lifts hundreds of thousands then a couple of quid invested in anti theft is peanuts.

Just a thought.

Owen.
