Time to pack, advice on food.

Well that time has come again, to pack my packs and force myself to go and ski....its a hard life.

But this time we are going self catering as we just love having our own space to chill out in the eve with a bottle of wine rather than sharing a hotel lounge if you are not in the mood. Hotels are great for the food and stuff but some of the rooms are small and we like a home from home with a sofa and kitchen.
So we are taking a little bit of food with us to try and keep costs down and would like some ideas for "light" meals due to our luggage limits.
We will be taking pasta, a few packets of cold meats for sarnies, cheese etc...
Got any ideas for lightweight decent meals...

And don't say Smash

ReadyBrek with a good dollop of Baileys and a generous helping of suitable spirit soaked raisens. Good in the morning or for an evening snack, yum.

Re:Time to pack, advice on food.

Bacon !!
A couple of vacuum packs of decent dry cured smoked back to make up some lovely bacon baguettes, perhaps with a few fried mushroom and a dollop of brown sauce (other colours of sauce are available) - yum yum.

And at a very prosaic level a small jar/pot/bag of salt and pepper. Silly to buy big containers of these in resort, probably be some left by a previous occupant but you never know.

T bags is the other one that may be worth considering - if you drink T of course.

Enjoy Snapzzz

Mind you if you take everything suggested here you'll have to leave your ski gear behind and probably little Snapzzz as well

Oops, just read your signature...Flaine.

To be honest for a week I wouldn't really bother too much.

Bacon - Yes you just can't get bacon as we know it here, unless you pay through the nose.

Paxo stuffing if you're going to have a roast.

Most other things you can get here, the carrefour super market is pretty good.

Ethnic items i.e things you might need to make a curry are hard to find!

I definitely wouldn't waste valuable luggage space on things like pasta, it's all available here and not anymore expensive than at home.

Have a pizza night...You can buy fresh rolled pizza dough here and make your own. Mozarella very cheap.

You definitely dont need to bring sandwich meats...Sooooo much available here!

You can survive on basic carbs like malt barley, hops, rice. In fact, Budweiser have been kind enough to supply it to us in a convenient liquid form. Just take a bag full of those and you'll be ok...

We did a couple of takeaway pizza's when one of the local restaurants closed and the other was fully booked ...... Euro15 euro and a round of drinks while waiting Euro22 euro the lot, plus the bottle of plonk from the supermarket Euro8......Euro 30 the lot . A normal meal out was Euro60-Euro70. And then there was a couple of "Friends" DVD's to watch.

Id be carefully with pizza. You never know if your accom will have an oven.

If you're driving, take a slow cooker! We ( the royal we ) put it on a lunch time and its ready for when we return in the evening. Soak up the contents with a french stick and wash it down with beer/wine :)

Re:Time to pack, advice on food.

We do Self catering every year. We do the following:-

- bacon, like you say cant live without the stuff!!
- Tea bags, French tea is cr*p (no offence, but it is!)
- Quick mixes for casserole/chilli etc. But we eat in every night as I enjoy cooking :D

We then stop at a carrefour or the like on the way to get other essentials - beer, gin, wine, milk, meat etc. It is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than in resort

This year for 4 we spend Euro170 in Carrefour in Moutiers for 4 peeps for a week :)

Well there is the problem, british brands are always going to attract a premium and i am sure they stick a bit more on because some gullible brit will pay it just so they can say they found walkers crisps abroad.

Double the price....jeez last time I looked they were about 55p. it's to be hoped they were the best packet of walkers you have ever eaten.

Personally I'd just take the things you would miss. Bacon, tea, etc. everything else you can buy at the supermarket or in resort, for the amount you would save for the hassle of having to pack it all and cart it over isn't worth it for me. Plus as tony said, I'd still eat out a few nights, it' gets you out and about and for me this is as much part of the holiday as the skiing.....

On our recent self catered week in Val d'Isere we took the following:

Half size packet of readybrek + squeezy golden syrup
Teabags
Marmite
35cl bottle of 12yo Glenlivet

What more do you need :D
