A Tribute to C & A

I have just been doing a little sewing repair to my snow boots which I bought about 16 years ago from C & A. This is the first repair I have ever had to do to them in all those years of not just ski trips, but dog walking and just general walking. I think I paid GBP9.99 for them.
Everything else bought about the same time has now either been passed on to someone else or gone beyond repair - as in the case of my husband's C & A snow boots which didn't survive the night toboggan run in Schladming!
Has anyone else still got any C & A gear - or am I on my own here as no-one else would ever dream of buying their stuff in the first place :D

They used to be pretty decent for relatively budget priced winter sports stuff in the UK if I remember rightly. Perhaps their role has been taken over these days by TK Maxx. Funnily though, on a recent trip to Austria, I went into a massive C&A store in Vienna and saw a great variety of ski wear, in far more varied styles and colours than you could find in aforementioned TKM.

I do recall getting frostbite in my new C&A ski gloves whilst in Bormio. I was in ski school and was removed from the class and told to go buy something more appropriate.
It was only minor 'nip and the feeling came back into my fingers after a couple of days.

I took the gloves back and got a full refund on returning to the UK.

C&A cheap and adequate but served a purpose my first ski gear came from there in 1975 I am pretty sure it was "Rodeo" at that time I dont think there was much technical gear around so thick t shirt jumper ski jacket and away you went, just to add my very first ski trip was to Zermatt have not been back yet but will do one day

I have some rodeo heavy weight thermals from about twenty years ago. I still use them occasionally for kayaking.

I have a Rodeo ski jacket which must be pushing 20 years old, although I don't wear it for skiing anymore, it does occasionally come out of the cupboard for dog walks and things.

I used to have two rather large Great Danes. A brother and sister pair, they were absolutely fantastic. Best dogs I ever had, I really miss them :(

Ah Rodeo - remember it well, whole family were kitted out in it years ago. Went into a C&A in Guadalajara in the summer - still going strong

At one time everyone on the slopes (well Brits!) had C&A rodeo gear, I know we started out with it because we could not afford the naff Nevica stuff at the time. So much more choice now and I have to say I rarely see two ski jackets the same on a trip - which also makes it easier to spot the better half!

C&A - so 80's.... sigh!!! this goes with mullet hair cuts and bad perms.....! (I expect Tony H and Ian have had them too!!)

I remember shopping in the Nottingham branch circa 1985..... i was a mean dresser

I had a perm too.....just the top mind, i was the spit of Neil Tennant of the pet shop boys.

Sorry - they are now neatly tucked into my case and shortly off to Sussex! I might say that they are an inoffensive black and what is probably called aubergine in the fashion circles, still with the original black laces and not a bit of fur (faux or otherwise) to be seen!

On the Piste is the best documentary ever that the BBC made - a fly on the wall piece about 1 group in Soll, Austria and the others of the DHO (v posh Downhill Only Club) in Wengen - search for it in Youtube - absolutely priceless. I had a tape of it which has disintegrated as it has been loaned out so much! Why the BBC don't repeat it every ski season I will never know - the clothes and hair may have changed but the beginners have not!! Never seen my dad laugh so much in his life, bless him!!

My first pair of salos were from c &a when I was at school.... It was my first trip to Austria with the school and I remember being in a mood because I wanted a pair of nevica but my parents would buy them with it being my first time.... Ahhh the memories. :lol:

Oh and I will also add they were Bright lime green..... Ah the 80's you gotta love them. :D

Back in the 80s when I was a casual and we were all wearing sports gear to football, ski jackets came into fashion.
People were wearing all sorts of expensive stuff, never having skied in their lives, myself included. I had a really smart Luhta one.
One night, at home to Sheffield United, my mate rolls up in this hideous white thing with a blue and red chevron down the front.
"Dead expensive this" he announced. "Its some Italian designer brand called Rodeo"
I think he got a pint thrown over it that night.

Just watched On the Piste - brilliant! Was in Soll last week - so glad that 2 man chair lift has gone! Nothing much changed in the Postwirt though - was that Jimmy I saw handing out the drinks?!

Hope you had a good trip Scarletgirl. We were very impressed by rooms at the Postwirt having had a makeover this year. They have had a staff change over though. We never used the hotel bar but the regular barman who was there who I think was Jimmy has been replced by a lad who looked all of 14!!

I tried that Ian but it just gives youtube episodes, what I wanted if poss was the whole series in one go to download & watch on tv, have you done this?

Hi scarlet fez. Had a fab time thanks. Did my first Black run there - didn't quite have the nerve in past years but nailed it this time!!! Jimmy is in the stube bar (if that's the right word!). Great refurb in hotel but sad to see some staff changes in the hotel itself - barman, reception & dinning room. Hope you had a god time as well.

I have an original tape from 1987 which I tried to get copied (for some of you) to no avail, because it had deteriorated too much and I had loaned it out too many times (this could have paid for a ski holiday at a fiver a lend!) I do wish the BBC would show this at the start of each season, it is their best ever documentary, I do wonder where the people featured now are and if they are still skiing?

I have visited the Falken Hotel in Wengen and seen the bench outside to the 'DHO', and smiled at the slopes in Soll when we dropped people off because I know that is where Kevin, Brenda and Maureen provided so many with so many laughs!

I too now have to make do with Youtube, I have my fix every now and again when someone asks what I find so funny about skiing!

I look forward to seeing this year's beginners....

IF you can get a copy on DVD, please could I obtain one from you? I was gutted when I gave my tape to a friend to copy (with the hope that it could be copied for others on this forum) but the tape was so used, it was not worth doing!

I defy anyone to watch On the Piste and not be dying on the floor laughing!! :D :D :D

Yes that was me! I was off work 2 years ago following an ankle op and so in need of cheering up, found the video I copied, however, I could not get it to play :-o so asked a work colleague who had a video to DVD copying device to copy it for me, and he tried but to no avail, so I am having to make do with the excerpts on You Tube, as I am finding all of you are too. Several of you asked if I had, and I had to apologise. :(

The whole documentary is a joy, from the funny music, to the clothing, to the difference in ski holidays, to getting on and off (or not!) chairlifts! and to the Ski Sunday music at the end of the beginner's ski race and the smile on Maureen's face!
