Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

Hi,
I'm a Mid Intermediate Skier that has stuck to the piste with just the odd run through a park and pow but would like to do more on the park and powder. Would still be mostly on the piste though 70%piste--30%Park/Powder. To start with.
Have looked at a few twin tips on eBay but wouldn't mind some advise if possible.
One's Ive seen are:
K2 Public Enemy
K2 Apache Stryker/ Crossfire
Rossigol Scratch
Armada El Rey
Salomon 1080
Salomon Foil
Don't want some thing geared too much at Advanced or Park/Powder
I'm 5'11" and 75kg so was thinking of a lenght of between 169-175

Any help would be much appreciated
Lee

Re:Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

I tried Scott Dozer last weekend, which is a rockered twin tip. I tried 165 cm (I am 5'6", female) dimensions are 129-96-126, at 175 they would be 131-98-129. 175 should be perfect for you. I am advanced skier but it is not a demanding ski in any respect. I really loved how it skied, floated nicely in pow and could also carve on fast groomers. Very agile ski. Awesome in moguls. It is branded as all-mountain/big-mountain, but description says that the ski is well-suited to the park. Very versatile ski. I wouldn't advise buying a park-specific ski as it would be too noodly for you if you spend 70% on piste. Look for the ski with wood core, not foam. And if you want good off-piste handling - 90-100 in the waist. It will also give you a better landing platform if you are into park. AFAIK, K2 Apache Crossfire is not a twin tip at all, it's an all-mountain carver. All other skis (I think apart from El Rey) are older models, 5-6 years old. nothinhg wrong with it as such, but technology has been improving all these years.

Cheers leaning towards the
De Rey out of those above.
Some Liberty Jinks have come on the radar, but read like womens looks arn't that girly though.
Any one skied them.
There a twin tip details;
Our women?s specific line combines the centered flex and energy of the Larose
Core with the damping and flexibility of UHMW sidewalls. The Jinx is available in
The 171 is designed for stronger women skiers who want some girth
under foot for big mountain riding
110 mm
85 mm
115 mm
R. 16,5 m
TECHNOLOGIE. Lamiated Bamboo & Popler wood core, P-Tex 2000 Base, HRG 48 Edges, ISO Sublimated Topsheet, UHMW Sidewalls
The Liberty Jinks is a womens Freeride ski. Are you a woman? If not don't buy them.

From your list the El Rey will be the best of the bunch IMHO.

For 70% piste work, I would suggest that 80-85mm underfoot with tip rocker and a broad shovel will be most versatile. You can afford to go slightly longer with a Twin Tip.

Re:Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

I'd have suggested Scott Punishers, but as you want some park use, they will be heavy. It depends on your strength, and how much park you want to do. I've owned some Punishers and they are pretty versatile, turn tight and loads of float. You will definitely need to go longer though. I'm 164 and I used 172's for a couple of winters. You lose length at the tips and tails.

Re:Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

I second Bandit that the difference between men's and women's ski is not in the graphics. If it says that it's a women's ski don't buy them even if the graphics is not girly. If you are set on El Rey, get them, they are the best of your selection, but if you want powder performance I would still recommend something wider and with some rocker too. It will make your life easier:)

Re:Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

Armada El Ray form that list every time. Brilliant ski according to reviews, and they look cool too.
My wife skis on K2 MissDemeanour's, but they are female specific. She loves them, they do anything she wants them to.
Avoid the Rossi's, they are like skiing noodles.

Scott do some great skis for piste and powder, but as has been said probably a bit heavy for the park. I ski on Neo's, semi twins that blast a piste and float well enough in powder to be able to go off piste when you want.
Punishers and Missions are slightly fatter and not dis-similar.

Movement also do some great all round skis, worth a look.

I also skied on Salomon 1080's on a test at Hemel and found them very entertaining. Not sure they'd be up to 70% time on piste though.

Far too many on the market to choose from these days.

Cheers Guys very helpful.
De Rey it is then.
Choice is between a New set of 10/11 178cm with SLR 100 bindings.For GBP275
Or a
Used set of 2009 171cm with Marker Griffin Freestyle Bindings. Look in good nick with just needing a wax and edge.
Dunno because i have never skied with you and don't know your ability. For someone just under 6foot prob a 178 but Im not sure-you said you prefer shorter so go for it

mind you the marker bindings are better fwiw imo

Re:Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

Knew the marker bindings would be better as I'm only starting out with a bit of park & powder the guy said the SLR 100 would be fine.
I'm I right in thinking that the shorter ski would be better for a lesser ability as its easier to turn but would be poss flappy in speed, and the long better at speed but less forgiving in the turns and technique?
My 172 hit bang on my chin and 178 would be on the nose.
Was told to go next size up with twin tips as they have less ski touch snow due to the tips.
cheers all for the info

Re:Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

Shorter does not mean flappier necessarily-depends on the ski and I never found the el ray to be flappy and I'm 110kgs so put a lot through it!!

But you are right that usually shorter is easier to ski, however if a twin comes to your nose I wouldn't see that being a problem?

Entirely up to ou though, longer would make them harder to turn but way better in powder

Twin to your chin may be too short.
It will turn easier as you say, but nothing to do with ability and you might actually find a longer ski more flappy at speed.
The longer ski will turn longer and you'll need to work it a little harder.

Valid point, each ski has a different radius.

My point was on a like for like ski. My Neo 166's have a tighter turn radius than the 176's, and with that extra 10cm (I skied some 178 Scott Patrol's a couple of years ago) I just found there was too much to get round the corner when playing on certain terrain.

Re:Help Choosing Twin Tips Please

How the ski will turn depends on the ski sidecut, not the length. My 175 JJ has 12m radius turn and literally turn themselves, but my other shorter ski is more demanding in this respect as its sidecut is 20m. So to make it turn tighter I need to work harder.
You should be fine on 178 - it's not that the ski will be towering over you or that it's a superstiff charger. It's only about 5cm longer than your regular ski and twin-tip will shorten the contact area some, so essentially length-wise they will feel very similar.

Dude seriously check out the Salomon suspects 171 boot centre or 176 true centre, Line afterbang 176, Line Chronic 173 or Volkl wall 177 true centre if your still looking for a new setup.

Best idea is to get along to your local snow dome or hill and demo a set to get a feel, each and every ski skis differently.

Not on a longer version of the same ski, thats the point I was trying to make. I've got 166's and could have gone 176s on the same ski, but found them too difficult to navigate all round. Nothing to do with the sidecut, although your point is post on that a ski with a shorter sidecut will obviously not need to be worked as hard in the turn.

I think my neo's are something like 12m radius, which is one of the reasons I got them for piste skiing.

Suspect is a horribly soft, 100% park orientated ski which is fun in the park but useless anywhere else.

Infact all the skis mentioned by jogs are park skis. Not that this is a bad thing, just to warn you. Although i presume the el ray is decent in the park it is excellent on piste too and will be wide enough to venture into light off piste.

If you do want to ski anywhere else than the park do not centre mount your skis-having the extra tail takes some getting used too

No. You don't want a park-specific ski if you want to be able to ski all mountain without hating it.
