Severe Weather Warning For The Alps

Hi All,

Those whom subscribe to the J2SKI emails for the Weather Updates will have got the warning, for those that don't basically the temps will nose dive this week and through next weekend.

I have just double checked with Snow-Forecast for my local area ( Les Arcs ) and temps will be down to around -35oC with the windchill.

The link for Snow-Forecast is http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Les-Arcs/6day/bot .....

Just pick your chosen resort from the menu, please all take care when going out this week, and indeed all weeks of the season, and keep an extra eye on the little helmeted gromets if you have any.

Plenty of factor 30 and over and a balaclava might be a good investment for the next few weeks.

Stay safe and enjoy.

jon.

With windchill I skied in -35c in Zermatt. It was quite shocking, I think that my body knew it did not belong there. 1st time I'd worn 2 pairs of LJ's. I chatted to a guy who'd got Frostbite on his face, he was skiing in shades. His face on one side was really swollen and discoloured.

His mates, all from Zurich, though it was amusing

Take a daypack, and put in an extra fleece, just in case. Glove liners (silk or thermal) will be important, as will a balaclava.
Take a coffee and warm up break every hour :D I found I didn't shiver in Zermatt, but I could feel that I was getting colder, and moving stiffly.

Re:Severe Weather Warning For The Alps

Bandit

Cheers. To be fair it won't be hitting those temperatures in the day (-25 looks to be the lowest daytime temp) but will still be very cold.

A balaclava is the one thing I don't have. A trip to my local sports shop will be in order...

Re:Severe Weather Warning For The Alps

Depending on what type of facemask you get be wary of moisture building up between your skin and the layer which can result in frostbite.

Watch for the early signs of frostbite (ie. ski with someone and check regularly).

Re:Severe Weather Warning For The Alps

Is that particularly cold for the alps?

We holidayed in Norway December 2010 and that was, by far, the coldest I've experienced so far. Minus 15 was the warmest day and we hit minus 25 one afternoon. I found that ok as long as no skin was exposed. However a couple of the higher chair lifts/pistes were pretty grim with the windchill factor. Touching the shaft of your ski pole with bare hands no fun I can tell you (that is an innuendo free anecdote...)

We were reliably informed by a local that it had hit - 35 on the thermometer the previous season (presumably colder than - 40 with the windchill factor)!

There were signs near the chair lifts with the words 'advarsel' and 'frostskader' on them. No need for a translation....!
