Re:Sestriere Snow

Hi Wide Phil, look no further than the page on this site for Sestriere :D There are webcam links on those pages too, so you can see firsthand.

http://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/Italy/Sestriere_snow_report.html

You can also sign up for email snow reports as well now you are a member. Simply go to your profile, using the link at the left side of these boards, and select the resorts you wish to get snow information on.

Finally, if you are lucky, someone who is either out there or just returned will post here with first hand info.

Welcome to J2SKI

Edit, actually it looks like only one of the webcam links is up to date, so I will pop it in below so you can see what is happening from here

Re:Sestriere Snow

The slopes are great...really wide and the ability to ski the whole of the Milky Way (400kms). Sestriere itself is very soleless...a concrete jungle with limited appeal IMHO. However Sauze D'oulx just over the hill is v lively and more quaint.

Whatever if you are there for sking you will have a great time.
Have fun...me I will be at Serre Chevalier 4-11 Feb..your lift pass covers you for a day there, Alp D-and L2A I think

Re:Sestriere Snow

Wow.Lovely pic, Ive never seen the place with as much snow.

I echo whats been said. Some great skiing there, but dont get be restricted to that area, head over to Sauze where the skiing is lovely long cruisy runs, and a much nicer ambience.
Also have a day at least in MontGenevre, and if there is a trip going to Serre Chevalier, do it.

Re:Sestriere Snow

We just had a week in Sauze d'Oulx (28 Jan - 4 Feb) and I agree with previous comments. The pistes in both resorts are FANTASTIC. Loads of wide, cruisy reds, abundant snow - and, best of all, NO CROWDS! In fact, more often than not we were the only ones on the piste. Apparently this is typical.
Sauze is much prettier than Sestriere and has a couple of small supermarkets, ski clothes shops, bars and cafes (incl a wonderful cake shop). Its reputation for being a lager-lout resort is very much out of date. There was no noise from the few late-night spots all week. (Shows our age!!) We stayed in a 2-star hotel (Hotel Monte Genevris) in Sauze which was fine; no frills (i.e. no pool/spa, no choice for meals unless requested, rooms a bit basic) but run by a delightful family, nice atmosphere, clean, v. helpful staff.
Overall, I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND staying in Sauze d'Oulx from where you can ski over to Sestriere and visit Mont Genevre (Inghams organised a day trip there which would have been worthwhile had I not been laid low with winter vomiting bug - ugh!).
