Hi All,

Just read there has been a massive avalanche which has cut all links into and out off Zermat in the Swiss Alps.

I've just heard about the massive storm hitting parts of the alps with 100kph winds overnight, plus a massive dump of snow.

Everyone will be fine, the rail line is blocked, along with the road.
Folks might be late leaving the resort if MGB can't clear the track quickly tomorrow.

Hi Iceman,

Hopefully there has been no-one hurt , I read that some resorts due to the huge storm's that have hit resorts have dumped over a metre of snow just today alone.....apparently Val Thorens and Les Menuires have been hit also.

I hope your friend is okay , and that goes for all out in the Alps at this time.

Just hover over the red dots until you find your chosen resort highlighted , then click where it says play to see the coloured weather patterns indicating the snowfall forecast over the next few days.....to be honest on top of whats already fallen, it doesn't look good for travel plans etc.

I think there are going to be a lot of delays due to bad weather and heavy snow for several days yet.

Just got text back.....

It's snowed like I have never seen. No skiing today, bit shit. Rupy(his wife) has eaten my left leg and the Don Perignon has run out. Last day tomorrow then will worry about getting home!

Sounds like times are hard....

Heavy snow for the next few days and lower temperature's from what I can make out, makes you wonder what the rest of the season has in store.....it's only been a couple of weeks so far.

It appears that a piece of the Weisshorn glacier above Randa broke off causing a powder avalanche. Three vehicles were caught in it and an uninhabited building was damaged, but nobody was hurt. The air blast that preceded it brought down some power lines. Power has now been restored but the road and railway through Randa remain closed because of the danger of further avalanches. Saas Grund, Saas Fee and Saas Almagell are also cut off, as is the Lotschental.

Wind speeds of up to 270 km/h have been recorded (the second highest ever in Switzerland).

I'm glad that the only emergency appointment he needs is with his bank manager. I wouldn't want to have an unscheduled stay in Zermatt without an emergency supply of cash.

Trains to Zermatt are running again and the road from Visp to Tasch has been reopened, but the road to Saas Fee is still closed.
