Scare chairs / lifts

Not to hijack the "I want to go on holiday now" thread, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread for scary lifts....

As pointed out and also not to steal Snapzzz thunder, quite possibly the scariest lift I have been on is the said chair in Val D'Isere? If my memory is correct I think it's called the sunny express and it's the only chair you can take, to take you over into the final valley of Val.....

Check out this video from YouTube. 8)

What's your scariest chair or lift you have ever been on or do you know of any to share in this thread?

Those two lift feel a bit weird but they don't bother me, however I've been on both with people that have to close their eyes, they grip the bar like their lives depend on it.

Re:Scare chairs / lifts

Most unpleasant chair ride was in the US. Very windy day, chair with no safety bar or footrest. It's surprising how much skis catch the wind, and want to pull you out of the seat

Stewart, the feeling will diminish a little, with each chairlift you ride :D

Re:Scare chairs / lifts

I suppose there was an old cable car which has now been replaced from Chiesa village up to alpe 2000, the best part was coming down as it started over the snow line and then dropped over the edge of a sheer cliff face and you get that feeling of your stomach moving up to meet your neck ... beautiful views though but that was back in 1977. 8)

Re:Scare chairs / lifts

I don't like the really big cable cars much, especially when there are loads of skiers in them, packed in like sardines by the lift people, and I feel slightly wobbly and fragile standing in ski boots holding my skis, and the whole thing makes me feel a bit claustrophobic especially when the cable car starts moving and it sways about. And, just to make things worse, if it's one that climbs a long way very fast, I start feeling a bit sick as well because of the change in altitude.

The only time I've felt a bit scared in a chair lift was when the ski instructor started swinging it, because I thought I was going to be sick, and I had to ask him to stop doing it (in my rubbish French, because he didn't speak English).

Ally

It's the Little gondolas that I don't like. This four person one in Northern MN has a really steep section where it feels almost vertical. Several years ago ago a car broke free on the steep section and slid back into two others before crashing. Now I like it even less, even though I guess the checks are more thorough now.

I had one very hairy gondola ride at Deer Valley in high winds, where the car had to stop for several minutes because it was swinging to much to bring it in to the lift station. A very white knuckle experience.

Re:Scare chairs / lifts

Cheers for that, I hate gondolas as it is! In my head, there is a massive rush at the start to get 4 people in with rucksack and H then the ski/board on the outside. I spend the whole journey convinced that my skis will fall out, esp when go over the pylons! I go not enjoy them

The cable cars I am ok with. Unless I think of the James bond film when they all got stuck

Give me a drag lift any day.......

Probably safer than flying. The difference is that you can't look directly in a plane. Oh man, can you imagine standing in plane while looking down 35,000ft below your feet

Re:Scare chairs / lifts

That's the standard way they remove injured skiers from the pistes in St Anton, off to hospital dangling on a wire strapped to a doctor. I seem to have quite a few photos of rescues in my St Anton photos. No one I know so far, luckily.

Re:Scare chairs / lifts

There's a chairlift in St Anton that does cause a sharp intake of breath as you come up on a steep arrete, with nothing but precipitous drops on either side! Makes that Alpe D'Huez thing look like a lift for babbies!

No it's the Schindler chair. Steep rise and then it plateaus out at the top ad you've got about half a mile sheer drop beneath you. Fantastic views.

If you're scared of ski lifts, maybe you should take up a different past time? I've got a mate who allows the type of lift to dictate where he will ski and I can't just go up the mountin and ski around with him as he will proper get wound up about a lift and refuse to go on it.
Don't you Stewart?????
