It's a wind up, Matt. I know you start at the top, flash down the hill, in great style, and then daydream about your next run down when sat in the Gondel.....
No time for any other activity.

A few people used the free 3V app while in Val Thorens last Jan. Very impressive, accurate location and array of stats. Only problem no one's battery lasted long enough to run their phone with GPS switched on for a whole day skiing.

http://www.les3vallees.com/en/live/free-iphone-app.277/

I installed this the other day for my phone (Android, shock horror!!)

Maps, Weather, Webcams, speed, toilets, open & closed times. But what does it use GPS for apart from speed? Does it show on the map where you are?

There are a few out there. But mine are Android :D

Re:Iphone Skiing Apps??

I have the iRega rescue call out app, just in case http://www.rega.ch/en/news/news/detail.aspx?id=1964

As well as speed the tracking apps display distance travelled, vertical meters skied, altitude and slope inclination. They also plot your position and your tracks on a map, unfortunately GPS isn't that good at measuring altitude (it's usually underestimated by about 20%) so you weren't going as fast as the speed displayed :(, but you did ski more vertical metres :-).
Re:Iphone Skiing Apps??

Due to battery limitations I'll take my Garmin watch with me this year instead. Hopefully I'll get a better GPS signal than with a smartphone. Not sure how precise the Garmin Connect maps will be around ski resorts.

I couldn't be bothered faffing around with my phone last year. Battery drained ridiculously fast. Download charges are scandalous. Keeping phone safe and where it could get a signal without being too close to my lift pass, forget it. That was before you calculated the arsing around while wearing bulky gloves factor. It took the pleasure out of skiing. No-one was interested enough in the results to put up with the delays.

When they suit I have an app for everything. Sportswise I find proper GPS equipment beats an app hands down.
