Good sunglasses for skiing

I suspect this has been asked before, but I know there are new products onto the market all the time.
I am looking for recommendations for a pair of good sunglasses for skiing. It would be good if they were usable for the summer as well.
I quite like Oakleys and was looking at the solid jackets.
Anyone have these? Wind is one of the most important factors and they have to fit under my helmet. Ps I want fully framed lenses.
Or any other recommendations?

I wear Dirty Dog sunnies. Very cool looking, great to ski in, dont mist up at all, and good all year round use as well. Much better priced than Oakleys as well.

Good quality UV screened unbreakable glasses that you like and can afford.
I reckon that's the criteria.
If it were me I would be going to try a few on with my helmet - comfort and a snug fit is so important.
My main glasses are branded Spyder - who knows who made them - but my spares are Bolle safety specs from the builders merchant @ GBP10 !!

Hi have had a pair of Revo sunglasses for the last 14 years. I swear by them, the lenses are superb.

I have used them annually for skiing and also for several summers when I was fortunate enough to have access to a yacht and did some coastal cruising.

I would definitely have them very high on my list if I decide to replace them.

Check out UV400 safety glasses, and cycling glasses. Unlike sunglasses, they are designed not to injure your face/eyes during an impact. Many look like designer sun glasses, but you can afford to take two pairs, not worry about someone sitting on them, and throw them away when scratched. Most are UV400 rated.

I often modify the arms to be comfortable under a helmet. Something I would be loth to do with expensive sunglasses.

Aldi/Lidl sunnies for skiing, usually about GBP8 so no worries when I loose them in a bar, land on them when I stack it etc. Think the lidl ones (which are some of those sunnie goggle combo thingies are the best this year if you can find any still as the offer was a few weeks ago.

I have a pair of Oakley Fives not because they are Oakleys but because they fit me well. They were relatively cheap at GBP55 about 3 years ago and still going strong despite me having sat on them and the obligatory falling flat on face.

I dont think designer glasses are meant to be 'better', it is just that people prefer the look and feel of them.

Hmm, being a bit of a pessimist when it comes to human nature, I wonder just how well a pair of $3 glasses would sell when badged as Oakley, RayBan or any of the many named brands and put on the rack at $150.

Equally, I would be willing to bet if you took the name off of the branded glasses and started selling them at $3, the sales for them would drop right off.

That is a bit extreme. My pair of oakleys at GBP55 if they sold for GBP30 brand name of , "cheap sunnies" I would still buy them. Like I said on the comment above, the GBP3 tend to burn your eyes as they dont have protective qualities.

I guess they could come under that tag. Like I stated earlier, I have had a pair of Revo glasses for many years.

When I purchased them, I did not know who revo were, but subsequently discovered they are a "top" brand. It just happened, I needed some glasses and they were all I could find that fitted and that I liked. They were expensive, but I really needed them at the time, so I got them.

TBH, after reading up on the glasses posted by Trencher, I am going to order a pair of those RayZors and if they are any good, will get a few more to be left in places I am likely to need them, plus take a pair of spares when I go skiing.

Back to your point, I am as guilty as most of wanting to buy "decent" stuff, and often that means we believe a named brand will be what is required without checking to see if you can get a better product for much less without a name on it. I think that is one of the things you start to realise as you get older, and is called experience or wisdom.

Nope proper UV protection and this years came with cat 1, 3 and 4 lenses.

So, now we are all straight......

What do you prefer? Sunglasses or goggles on a nice day? I know conditions are a lot to do with preference but for me a decent pair of goggles with my lid is better. As good as my oakleys are, I get watery eyes with speed. Goggles also give a warmer face :)

Nope proper UV protection and this years came with cat 1, 3 and 4 lenses.

If they fit you, buy them. Do they look good. Di they make you look like an expert skiier? Or is that just me that wants that to happen?

This is the only pic I can find of me wearing my Revos. I tend to not get into pictures, so this rare self portrait on a lift is it folks.

Revo glasses, purchased in 1997 at Gatwick Airport. I really cannot recall if they were GBP120 or GBP220 :shock: but have been the best sunglasses I have ever had.

I've seen a couple of nasty injuries when people have face planted wearing metal framed sun glasses :!: Can't really see the design from the photo, but imagine your face hits the snow, the lenses pop out leaving the metal of the frames contorting and coming apart as your face slides along. Sorry for being so graphic, but I've seen it happen.

Well I went out this morning and tried on a few pairs of Oakleys. Tried flak Jackets (inc. the XLJ), Straight Jackets. But in the end I went for a pair of Monster Dogs. They seemed to fit a look better on me (so the wife said), and bigger wrap around lens. Went for the iridium lens rather than polarised.
Probably paid a bit more than on line, but the shop threw in a hard case (not Oakley, but that doesnt matter as it fits perfectly). And the shop owner spent a lot of time with me patiently waiting whilst I couldnt make my mind up - so dony mind paying for the service.

Thanks for all your help.

And the snow to Tignes (heading there in late January).
Just need to pluck up the courage (or stupidity) to try the Face!

I've got a pair of Iakley straight jackets in Livestrong black and yellow and they're great. Plastic frames too - as noted above there's something about metal that worries me for skiing/MTB ing, oh and Metal's cold to put in your face after goggles!
