European weather patterns

We have all heard about the weather patterns called La Nina and El Nino which affect the Pacific Region, these deliver devastating unpredictable weather patterns to areas. Last year we saw resorts such as Mammoth receive a double figure in feet of snow over three days.

My question is as follows:

These weather patterns have only been recognised from the 80's as far as I understand. Do we have any specific weather patterns which effect Europe, if so what are they called (If named)?
Re:European weather patterns

So ....
The European system is greatly affected by the El's - clever Americans naming these with a latin name as they are hogging all the snow at the moment and not taking responsibility !!!
Gulf Stream must have an effect and something called the Jet Stream as well.
But, primarily, I blame the Yanks!
Time for them to share the snow?

It must be getting bad if Adders is brought to swearing in a post!

This high stuck over Eastern Europe is showing no signs of going anywhere.

Sods Law - it will break, horrific weather will flood in, UK, roads/Airports etc closed, European Airports closed, roads completely blocked, resorts with so much snow that avalanche danger will be at 7 and lifts shut due to too much snow.
All in time for Christmas.

I am bored with being pessimistic! I'm sure the snow will arrive and this will be a lovely ski season, after all it's not even started yet.

Re:European weather patterns

Ok so it turns out that our weather is dictated by our western counterparts. I would have thought that we relied on Scandinavian cold weather blown down?

So far everything that has been circulating on the web has been wrong, I read so many articles about how the UK was going to suffer from heavy snowfall from October through to January.

Is it so much to ask that we have nice warm summers and cold snowy winters? It makes the thought of moving to Canada tempting.
Re:European weather patterns

Around here in the Mid West, the ski hills have started opening, and the ten day looks reasonable. I haven't been yet. The limited runs are full of boxes, rails, and park rats. We will get above 11'C on Thanksgiving (Thursday). Historically this happens once every thirteen years, but has occurred three times in the last thirteen years. It might be a good year for the US, but who knows. One thing is for sure, Els or no Els, There's more luck involved than anything else.

I had reservations about the travel too, but once I was there, it did not prove to be an issue at all. It gives you a chance to let your breakfast digest on the way there, and is a nice comfortable relaxing trip back, allowing you to warm up on the bus and take a gentle nap prior to arriving back and getting ready for the evening. There is no standing on the buses, and the seats are comfortable, with plenty of leg room. You also get to see some stunning views of the Rockies, and if lucky the local wildlife.

Don't let the thought of a trip to the slopes put you off visiting Banff, it is well worth it.
I concur with Far Q, I have been to Banff many times and have enjoyed it more than Europe, the town is beautiful, the powder is amazing, great varied skiing (sunshine & Lake Louise) and the people are extremely friendly unlike some of our European counterparts.

Dont let the bus ride put you off it really is 25 or 45 mins rest at the end of the day enabling a quick cat nap ready for the Banff night life whether shopping, dining or partying.

Absolutely well worth a try.

Correct. However, the weather pattern in Europe last season and the forthcoming season ahead have got me worried that I might actually run into bad enough conditions as to spoil my enjoyment, and I do not want to run that risk. I always ski at altitude by choice, or head somewhere with a fantastic snow record at least, and thus far (touches wood) I have not been unable to ski on a holiday, but I fear the time is coming when thats going to change, and therefore the only other option is to consider heading across the Atlantic.
I would prefer not to take a 10 hour flight, or a 4 hour transfer, but the more people I speak to who have been insist that once I have been, I will never return to Europe again. I scoff at such a sweeping statement, but maybe just maybe the time is upon me when I need to find out for myself.
Initially I was also put off by the cost of getting there, but when you consider the cost of flights to US or Canada, the deals that are starting to crop up do look very arttractive. Ok yes, I will end up spending more on a ski holiday, BUT is that VALUE for money bearing in mind the extent, conditions, cost of eating/drinking out, lack of queues and quiet pistes.....????
I am not 100% convinced as yet, I'll be honest, but with deals like the GBP600 one, its very tempting to give it a whirl.
This business with Thomas Cook also makes you think twice about everything, as times are very very uncertain. A lot more uncertain than most of us either actually know or really think they are. We really are on the verge of a change in world financial order.

Right, I'm off to trawl the net for January deals again......

Andy I hope you are right !

Tony, I Canada is quite a cool place to go, the flight there is quite exciting as it is the start of you ski hols, the flight back is easy, a nightol and a nightnurse tab and you sleep for 8 hrs, trust me it works !

The down side is when you get back the jet lag knocks you out for at least 48 hrs but I still think its worth it!

Canada has some of the best Skiing in the world! Don't be put off by the short drive from Bannff to Lake Louise and Sunshine Village or the long flight. I was there for a season in 2006, amazing town, amazing people and fantastic skiing. The resorts are absolutely massive as well you won't get bored. After skiing in Canada you will feel compelled to go back.

Re:European weather patterns

I have been to canada for the last 3 years visiting Kimberley, Banff, Lake Louise & Nakiska. This was due to my mum living in Calgary. What a fantastic place to ski. Great snow record & friendly people and you feel like you almost have the slopes to yourself. Admittedly its more expensive than Europe but worth every penny. It would be more appealing if the tour operators would provide a half board option as this is what drives up the cost. I am giving Breckenridge a try this Feb although I really wanted to try Big White in kelowna or Whitefish in Montana. This will have to wait for next year now. As for Europe, it would have to be a very good deal to get me there again as its just too busy on the slopes and lacks the powder that everyone goes in search of!
