Absolutely no excuse this year

So, around this time of year I like to think about getting ski fit, 'thinking' usually being the operative word.

This year I have no excuse, I went for a walk around our local park this afternoon, it's practically my back garden, and to my absolute delight an outdoor gym has been installed, including a cross country skiing machine!

Yay!

Yeah, but....

There are plenty of gyms near us all....can we be bothered to go is a different matter. Out door gym in the rain will not be much fun :(

Re:Absolutely no excuse this year

I've been working hard in the last few weeks on my exercise bike and rowing machine. My knees are killing me, but I've lost some weight and the fitness is coming. (Was firmly heading towards the 'tub of lard' category!)
Just hope the clouds reward my hard work! I won't be impressed if we only have the Tignes glacier to play on for a week!

Re:Absolutely no excuse this year

Been doing legs dips with 4kg weights in each hand for 5 weeks now. Twice a day....started off with 50 and was feeling like death , but now up to 130 per session....plus badders and a bit of running. Must be getting keen ) .,,,,,but at my age I do need to keep my fluid uptake OK so its down the pub at equally regular intervals to balance things out

Our club holiday guide says: Preparation is the key to a great ski holiday. Special attention should be given to two main areas - general fitness and alcohol tolerance.

Re:Absolutely no excuse this year

I've lost 1 stone and 2lbs through healthy eating and no exercise.

I did a bit of cycling during the summer but that was short lived.

Not sure I'll bother now, only two weeks to go.

Re:Absolutely no excuse this year

A great general workout that can be done with a single barbell for general core and leg strength:

Put a weight on the barbell that you can do 15 reps of squat press and perform the following with no rest between exercises:

15 x Squat press
10 x Dead lift
10 x Upwards row
10 x lunges (on each leg)
10 x Squats

Time yourself and have a 2 minute rest period and then repeat. You should repeat 3 times.

If your gym has a power plate machine these are fantastic for replicating skiing conditions. Just set it on high and get your squat on.

Re:Absolutely no excuse this year

Gym? No way, full of pretentious planks.
Fitness? As long as you can walk a good distance without getting out of breath, you'll be ok
Legs? I usually do 4 weeks of sit ups to strengthen the core and squats to build the quads, and thats plenty. I've never found on a weeks recreational skiing that I've felt unfit.
I lost 1 stone 8lbs in the summer by dieting, and I've maintained that weight by eating more sensibly, stopping snacking, no more junk food, buscuits, crisps or chocolate, and I've cut down on alcohol by cutting out midweek drinking and not going out EVERY Friday.
Its all made a big difference.
I do think people spend for too much time worrying about being overweight or unfit when you're probably fine for a weeks skiing. You really dont need to be Superman.
