new skis!

My girlfriend is buying some new skis - having a twin top vs carvers. She skis lots on piste but also would take the odd trip through the snow park (nothing too fancy though!) and would do a few dare devil off piste things every now and again..what would you folks advise? And have you any idea of a model..whats your opinion on Elan as a make also?
Cheers

Re:new skis!

My take on this would be to get some SL skis. These will be huge fun on piste and inevitable bumps. For actual skiing progression these will be much better than a twin tip. Unless you really are planning on skiing in powder >5cm deep where a stiff ski will likely give you the occasional face plant a "normal" ski is much more suitable.

Fat skis should have touring bindings and skins (also heard helicopters are good).

If 90% skiing falls into nr piste <5cm, then just rent something wide when you are lucky enough to get a big dump or a helicopter : :D

Re:new skis!

I ski mainly on piste, but wanted something that would take me off piste and ski powder when the snow falls. I went for an all mountain semi twin, 82mm underfoot. Skis fantastically on piste, and has the dimensions etc to go into the soft stuff too.
Mate of mine has some GS skis and he struggles in anything which isnt immaculately groomed.
Twinnies only really essential for skiing switch or doing jumps.

Most freeride skis perform brilliantly on piste, the advance in technology with 'go anywhere' skis has been remarkable in the last 2 or 3 years.

Re:new skis!

Well I had some Atomic BlackEye a few years ago which were pretty versatile. Fat at the front, 79 ish in middle. These are pretty all mountain, go anywhere and will carve very nicely. Swapped them for some Dynastar 4x4 Contact which are pretty much same sort of thing (somehow I preferred the Atomics, bit softer perhaps in powder). Now have some Salomon Shoguns with touring setup which are also okay on piste until you ski fast or are on really hard snow, not too bad in bumps and nice to ski in powder (I actually wish had gone fatter). With the snow last year in Europe, I wish had a thinner SL type ski and that is my next investment. I would go for some atomic BlackEye, these will tick all boxes and unfortunately mean that as ever the skier not the ski is most important.

Re:new skis!

Your g/f might like to look at getting around 80 underfoot to provide versatility. Not too sure how much skiing experience?. Start with looking at reviews of the Scott Maya or Dynastar Legend Idyll. If they seem to tame, take a look at the Atomic Elysian which is a bit wider.

All of these will perform well on piste, and are women specific skis. Test before buying unless absolutely certain.

Twinnies are just not for the park depending on the model normally 60/40 piste off piste, Mrs W loves them.

Re:new skis!

In terms of experience - nothing on piste is much of a challenge really - will give anything a shot. Did a season in Risoul/Vars last year and probably has 12 weeks on top of that. Does lots of just off the piste skiing/moguls, not much of park goer (torn acl a few years back and jumps tend to put pressure on that). Early 20's just a little unsure of what to get and whether or not to try before we buy!

I didn't say that, I said that they were only ESSENTIAL for park skiers.
Mrs H skis on twinnies and they're brilliant on piste, as long as you don't ski right behind her as they kick up some serious snow.

Try and test if at all possible. As she has quite a bit of experience I'll throw in a couple more for consideration. Both these skis perform, the Whitedot's slightly more forgiving IMHO.

Movement Black Rose, which are a super smooth ride, can be enjoyed by Intermediates and up, but do have a big turn radius..I know, I own some and love them )

Whitedot, The One, which will give the same float, stiff enough to ride well on piste, but turn tighter than the Rose's. With the Whitedot's she will probably go longer on length, as they have a shorter effective ski length.

Re:new skis!

Hi mate,

In a similar situation myself, going on a instructor course in Jan (Can not wait !) and iv been looking into some all-mountain skis and after abit of homework iv decided to get the Salomon twenty twelves, they came out as the best all mountain ski according to Freeskier magazine - American ski mag. Iv found a site which is doing an amazing deal on them at the moment with bindings !

http://www.sailandski.co.uk/acatalog/Salomon_Twenty_Twelve_Skis___Z12_Bindings_2012.html

Hope that helps.
