Another which resort-Kitz or Selva

Hello all.

To fit in my 4th and final weeks skiing for the coming season I was happy to wait for a last minute deal but then yesterday I received an email with a special 2 day only offer for the EXACT week that I can go skiing. It's a good enough deal to make me book up so I've been looking around at:

Tinges: been before but love it. French school holidays so I'm ruling it out.

Dolomites: The cheaper options don't really meet with what we want (good intermediate mileage, and easy access to the Sella Ronda). So we'd looked at Selva. Before discount prices for something HB are ~GBP700pp. Although I've skied in Italy (via linked resorts) I've never been based in Italy and the Dolomites look stunning.

I've also looked at various options in Austria, some have either been ruled out either due to cost, I've been before, or will be going this year already. I can take advantage of a miss-pricing online and get a AI club hotel in a good location for GBP620, I've phoned the operator and they said they'd honor the internet price due to their error and hold it until the end of the day.

So Kitz is the cheaper option, shorter transfer over there ~1.5 vs 2.5 hrs? Plus to Austria I can fly from my local airport. Italy requires Manchester flights which is about an hour further each way.

Although it doesn't really add up I've never skied in the Dolomites. This is the first trip me and my other half will have taken when it's just been the 2 of us so I'm happy to go at her pace (she's a pretty good intermediate) The ski safari in Kitz sounds right up her street with a 22 mile circuit.

Anyone been to both and can comment on the overall experience? Main thing with Kitz seems to be the natural snow record but mid Feb will to gamble.

Need to book tonight to take advantage of the offer. I'm currently 80:20 in favour of Kitz.

Interesting. Whats an A1 club hotel and what board can you get there? I've looked at Kitz before and dismissed it in favour of other places including Dolomites.
I've also been looking at Selva, Arabba, and a couple of other resorts linked to the Sella Ronda, and I've been looking at fully catered chalets for GBP560 approx for a week, thats in mid Jan.
Personally I'd go to Selva every time before Kitz, but thats just based on the skiing available and concerns over snow coverage. Theres just sooooo much to ski in the Dolomites.
I've also been hoping to wait for a late deal, but some operators are already discounting and I think under GBP600 for a decent chalet fully catered is a good price this season.
AI=All Inclusive I think club hotel is perhaps what they call a group of AI hotels in Austria. I've been to the SkiWelt in February twice once where there was loads of natural snow and once when the lower slopes were topped up by the impressive snowmaking and had a great time.

I think the Dolomites can have there own snow issues being, southernly, and pretty dry at times. Good chance of bright sunny days too though.

GBP600 odd for a week of being fed and watered is pretty good in my book when it's the same price as most HB.

Dolomites have more snowmaking facilities than anywhere in the world, as far as I know. When you thinking of going? I'm looking at La Vella in mid Jan, snow really should not be a problem.

Re:Another which resort-Kitz or Selva

Re half term, as we can see with New Year offers, it appears that the recession will have an increasing effect on capacity take-up. You could, if you wish check the national stats by visitor nationality.

On Kitz v the Dolomites, both have totally different aspects. Kitz is traditionally alpine, modified by it's dominance and respect by virtue of the Hahnemkan. The Dolomites are dominated by beautiful vertical rock outcrops ~ they are most impressive as you ski by them on the Sella Ronda. I have skied in Kitz 5 or 6 times, and 3 times in the Dolomites.

My answer is ~ they should both be fairly high on the Euro hit list. So choose what is easy for you this time, and make the other journey when next years special offer comes along!

On the subject of machine snow, I would strongly prefer Kitz. I have skied several times round the Sella Ronda on a 15m wide strip of machine snow, and given the Italian standard of piste discipline.......

On the other hand, thinking about landscape, I have completed several watercolours of the Dolomites, and none of Kitzbuhel.

Re:Another which resort-Kitz or Selva

Cheers DaveMac. Booked Kitz tonight. My OT likes to have a half or full day off the slopes and liked the look of Kitz more as a town. Dolomites will def be on the hit list for another year, so many resorts so little time......

Re:Another which resort-Kitz or Selva

Thats a good shout, Grizwald. A tip for a half day in Kitz is the museum. There is an interesting history of skiing, and I am sad to say that I overlap with some of the timescale!!!! There are also some good paintings. The most famous Kitzbuhel painter is Alfons Walde. He painted in the early 1900s. I was talking to an Austrian gallery owner about 5 years back, she told me of an exhibition of Walde, where you felt that you could "walk into the picture". I just love his extreme of tone and colour, along with the starkness of his people subjects.

Before you go, look at the youtube videos of the Hahnemkahn, particularly of the Franz Klammer era. I met with him last year, and while he is a most unassuming man, he is quietly proud of his contribution to skiing.

There are great views across Tirol and down to the Hohe Tauern.
