Blades

Hi

I am thinking about trying blades this year. Does anyone have experience of using blades? How does the skiing experience vary with blades compared with normal skis?

I have a pair and although they are good fun for the odd day, I found I much preferred my skis.

Blades are for people who are fed up with skiing and simply want to mess around.

How does the level of control differ? Can you turn sharper or something? Are they slower somehow?

Not necessarily slower, but the key style seems to be "Out of Control", so probably keep with the rental boots :D

Re:Blades

Blades are great for drills. They force you to work on balance and subtle use of pressure. Whether you would want to spend more than a few hours on them though is another matter. Make sure they have DIN bindings. Most of the older blades had non release bindings, and are not worth risking a serious injury with.

Re:Blades

When skis were long and straight, blades were a super fun. But with short shaped skis, blades are redundant.
Quite honestly anything you can do on blades, you should be able to do on skis.

Re:Blades

I tried blades when I was a not particularly confident 4th or 5th week skier in my forties - I had such fun with them and found they gave me confidence as I was pointing down the mountain rather than zig-zagging across and for the first time my then teenage children weren't constantly waiting for me to get down a slope with them standing, arms folded and yelling 'Come on Mum' at me!!
However - that was in Montgenevre which seemed to suit blades. When I tried them out in Zermatt it was a totally different story and I went straight back onto skis and we sold the blades!
So, I think what I am saying is give them a try :D

Look blades can be good fun, just rent a pair for a day and have some fun but don't go wasting your hard earned on buying a pair. Bon ski , Sorry ...... Bon Blade.

Re:Blades

I bought the new Salomon Crossmax 120's which i love, i have used them for a couple of full week holidays and never really had a problem with them, have noticed these are a bit quicker than the 99cm Salomon ones i had in the past.
Really good for getting your balance as well as trying jumps and tight turns in mogul fields.

Will be taking mine away again this year and am really looking forward to getting back on them :)
