Where to take my little sis?

I am trying to decide where to take my little sister skiing.

Next feb i have decided i HAVE to have a second week away and have asked my little sister to come along. It will be her first time skiing and to be honest for various reason we have never been really close and i see this break as a chance to get to know her a little more.
I have decided that the first week in Feb is best for us and i am now looking at resorts. I am looking for somewhere that is going to be great for me and great for her too. As a total beginner i intend to put her in ski school for 6am lessons and i will tear up the pistes alone each morning (or with any groups available) and meet with her for some fun in the afternoons.

I have currently got it down to Avoriaz or Flaine. Why? Because i just fancy those resorts myself and they look OK for her. Also the short transfer really appeal
Does anyone have any thoughts on these places, especially ?

I really want a resort thats going to give me plenty of km's as i am likely to be alone for a 50% of the time.
Also half decent apres would be a bonus as we will be away from the wives/boyfriends!

Thoughts anyone?

I think it prudent with a new skier to choose somewhere with things to do and distractions just in case skiing does not work!
Nothing more miserable than hating skiing and being stuck in a shoe box with nothing to do.

and Snapzzz - I do think it particularly mean of you to "put" your sis in 6am lessons!
What's wrong with 9.30am like everyone else?

If fun, and spending time together, is (the most) important and you both like Avoriaz or Flaine, why look further ?

- Book a nice apartment,
- take a couple of chick flick ) dvd's with you (for in the evening),
- sisters lessons in the morning,
- you go skiing in the mornig
- in the afternoon go to a spa
- or go cross country skiing
- or go snowshoeing
- or go dogsledding
- or get wasted in the pub

I see a lot of potential for a fantastic week stay ! :D

I hate to agree with OLDAndy but 6am ski lessons would do me in. If you want some wine/drink each night and are tired after each day, getting up for a 6am lessons would be a nightmare.
Do 6am lessons REALLY exist? Or was that a misprint????
Possibly agood week ahead with your sister, but be prepared for the tumbles and the tears. I am a mother of 3 and last year really twisted me knee and actually cried on the slopes in pain.

I must admit I was fooled for a moment by the 6 a.m. lessons, until I realized that what Snapzzz meant was 6 morning lessons (at 9-30 a.m. or whatever) :lol:

I would definitely agree with finding a resort with plenty of other stuff to do in case Snapzzz's sister decided she didn't like ski-ing, or the weather was bad, or she hurt herself and couldn't ski, or something. That was why I picked Courchevel the first time around, because we were going with a beginner and I wasn't sure if she'd stick the ski-ing. And it was just as well, because she got a phobia about ski-ing and went window shopping and trying out the restaurants etc. instead!

I'd look at Seefeld in Austria. Nursery slopes close to the town. Plenty to do if skiing does'nt take, night-life OK(?). Nice municipal swimming pool/spa. Good place for cross-country. Whether there would be enough to keep an expert challenged for a week, I woudn't know, but if the main purpose of the holiday is to bond with your sister, then maybe you are prepared to forfeit that, seeing as it's your second skiing holiday of the year also.

Hi, Avoriaz great for both you and your sister, but if she doesnt like skiing not much else to do. Seefeld is a great suggestion. Really good for beginners ski and enough to keep the more experienced happy if you get an extended pass for either Garmisch or Innsbruck. The off piste attractions of Seefeld are great.Picturesque,good quality accomodation and some really nice bars. ) )

Hmmm thanks for all the input.

Yes, as ally suggests i did indeed mean 6 x AM lessons, not even i can get up at 6 o'clock!

I looked at seefeld a while back but decided it wasn't for me as it didn't appear to offer much for the more experienced. As i will be spending half of most days alone i planned on racking up the miles.

I am not too worried about my sis not taking to the skiing, i am sure she will as she is the active/activity type. If i am honest i am looking at resorts that I want to go to as i am paying and want to get the most out of it myself too!
Of course i would not go anywhere that would be absolutely inappropriate to the beginner....i really want to go to Zermatt or Chamonix but can wait for that.

Also i am struggling to find decent SC accom in Austria (with TO's) most seem to be hotels. I am hoping to get us separate bedrooms!

Thanks very much for the offer i am sure to remember it for future years if that is ok?
I really would like to find some high altitude ski in ski out accomodation on this occasion but Megeve is on my to do list at some point.

From your original 2 choices of destination, having visited both, I think you'll get ski in/out in Avoriaz, but will struggle to achieve this in Flaine. There is some new development in Flaine which might make this work, so choose carefully. Both resorts have lots of high rise apartment blocks, both are beginner friendly. As you want high mileage, I'll not suggest Grimentz for your sister, which has lovely beginner slopes and a choice of supportive ski schools, with British ski teachers available.
