Driving to Vaujany

Hi,
Have booked a ski holiday in ADH for Xmas :D with Vaujany being our base.
Does anyone know how long the driving time in France will be? (Calais to Vaujany)

Thanks for that Ian.
We drove to Notre Dame de Bellecombe in 07 and found the driving time to be a fair bit longer than my TomTom reckoned, mainly due to us driving overnight and there being heavy rain and fog too.
I have found the toll roads in France to be very good and fast but was thinking of maybe staying overnight somewhere on the way. Any recommendations?

Roger,

Just check the routeplanner and find an overnight stay somewhere in the middle. A basic accommodation just to sleep. Perhaps something like a F1 Hotel.

No need for luxury just a good bed and a shower. But that's just my opinion.

Nancy is a top tip. There are plenty Novotel / Accor hotels :D .

Hi Roger Mayne,

we have driven down to that region of France (Val D'Isere, Tignes, Courcheval, Peisey Nancroix) several times. Depending on weather, traffic and bladders it is anywhere between 8 and 10 hours for us.

That's for two Nissan Navarras fully loaded doing a pretty constant 85/90mph on the motorways. We always do it in one trip, usually catching the 4 or 5 am Eurotunnel getting to Calais aprox 6 or 7 am, and we arrive in resort mid to late afternoon.

We do have the luxury of having 5 or 6 drivers between the two vehicles, so we change at fuel stops. We take sandwiches so longest stop we have will be a fill up and "empty" stop, with maybe a coffee before back on the road.

It is a long drive for one driver.

Indeed it is. When we go to the Alps or the South of France we always take turns. Drive for 2-3 hours, have a break, switch places etc ...

But as always, plan ahead !

I've driven this myself and if you get an early crossing at around 6am you'll be on the road at 7 the other side, and be in resort by 5pm no problem. We drove to Serre Che which is another hour across the Col at least, and we were in resort at 6pm.
Easily done in 9 hours driving, but factor in some breaks and share the driving with another person.
Best route is definitely not via Luxembourg - I used to drive that way down to Spain, but its a fair bit longer. We did Troyes, Reims, Dijon, Lyon, Grenoble. However, top tip would be at Dijon not to follow the main motorway to Lyon but to head to the parallel motorway via Dole, Lons and Bourg en Bresse as its much less busy and avoids the worst part of Lyon.
At Grenoble you just need to follow N85 and D1091 signed to Briancon and its all good road, apart from the final climb up to Vaujany from the D1091. This road links across to Les Seybelles but its very often shut due to snow!

If you break overnight, do not follow the advice of a previous correspondent and book a Formule 1. Handy for the motorways, yes; but uncomfortable, concrete rooms with metal fittings, toilets and showers in plastic compartments down the corridor and few facilities. Spend a bit more and have a decent night's kip!
