Turin to Tignes

Anyone driven this?

We flew into, and drove from Chambery last year, but were told Turin was closer. Granted not by much, but apparently it's a quicker and easier drive?

I just can't see how Turin can be easier!
Possibly in the summer when the passes are open but in winter having to go through Mont Blanc tunnel or the southern one (can't remember name) would put a huge distance on the route.
Interested to hear if anyone has done the route you are asking about.

I'm thinking Turin-Bardonnechia-Frejus Tunnel-Maurienne Valley, then into the Tarentaise.
Memories of doing that route, it was pleasant, but the Frejus tunnel is pricey.

Had a look a google maps and it is a bit further. However flying to Turin was GBP100 cheaper…

Hi Smokey.

Not actually done this direct trip, but my thoughts on it are similar to the others. I suspect in ski season, most of the passes will be closed leading you to do a big detour.

I would have thought that if it was a viable option, then the TO's would use Turin more than they currently do. Mainly used for the Italian resorts only.

Is that saving per person or overall? If you have to use the MontBlanc tunnel, that will cost you a bit each way, so may eat into your savings.

Perhaps you could consider staying in Italy and trying a different resort, it is often cheaper than France.

Also, if you are going to drive, it is not that much further from Lyon. I am pretty sure most of the flights there will be cheaper than Chambery as well. Have you checked those out?

Thanks for the replies. I'd already booked the flights so can't change them, just wanted to know if anyone has driven the route.

Oh well, it's a change of scenery even if it's a bit further.

GBP85 return from Turin to Bourg st Maurice..it takes about 4.5hrs....by train

Sorry, I'm probably being a bit stupid here, but what's a pass?

I've looked at both routes, and the roads from Chambery, seem very similar to those from Turin. Why would they be shut?

Bandit - The route I was looking at was Turino-Avigliana-Susa-Novalesa....

I'm beginning to think this could be a bloody nightmare. And I didn't take out insurance on changing tickets... doh!

Yup. La Vanoise in Tignes.

I don't mind that long a journey, anything up to 3 hours is bearable.

Hi Smokey. A pass, is simply put a shortened version of a mountain pass. All this means, is a route where you can go through a mountain range from one side to another. Sometimes these are large valleys, but on others they are narrow openings at altitude between peaks.

Unless it is a very busy crossing, and on a well made road, these high passes are often left to nature during the winter and are closed due to them being snow bound, or because the roads to get to them become too dangerous with ice.

Sadly, the route you suggested above would go through the Iseran pass after Novalesa (not sure which passes would be needed to get to Novalessa to start with) which is the highest paved mountain pass in the Alps at 2770m and I have never seen it open in the ski season.

I don't know if there is a shorter route, but I would be looking at the following, especially if you cannot cross at La Thuile. Google Map Via Mont Blanc or Google Map via Bardonecchia

Equally, it looks like it is just 20 minutes in a Helicopter.

I think it'll be slightly more than the GBP109 car hire.

I'm such a plum. I just assumed it'd be straight forward to get there from Turin.

It would be a bit of a walk with the luggage. The train line finishes at Bourg St Maurice.

Hire cars at Turin airport aren't normally supplied with winter tyres or chains, you have to pay extra for them. In the province of Aosta it's mandatory to either use winter tyres or carry chains between the 15th October and 15th April. The route via the Frejus tunnel will cost 53 Euro each way in tolls, if conditions are good the journey will take about 3½ hours. The route via the Mont Blanc tunnel will cost 92 Euro in tolls and takes about 4 hrs

If you decide use public transport the route is:

Bus from the airport to Turin Porta Nouva station
Train from Turin to Chambery
Train from Chambery to Bourg-St. Maurice
Bus from Bourg-St. Maurice to Tignes

Travelling time will be between 5½ and 7½ hours. The winter time tables aren't published until December; the easiest place to check times is via the German railways website http://www.bahn.com/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml

Torino to Tignes its a long journey.unless there are 5 or you and each saving hundred on the flight by the time you pay say fifteen euros motorway in Italy[i][i] plus tunnel 50euros and another tenner to Chambery and further 6-7 to end of mitorway on Tarentaise valley and after 4-5 hours journey ( that is if the tunnel goes with no queue I suggest cancel flight to Torino ,buy one to Lyon ,grenoble Geneva or Chamber/ Aux des Bains[/i] and from there within 2hrs max you will be on the slopes.Less travel-more skiing is the formula me thinks :)
