Re:The Never List

I have also "sinned",,but what is important is not to sin repeatedly or for the same reason! In short learn form your sins!

For the readers who do not know me,,I tend to be positive in my life so rarely do I focus on the negatives,,,the sins!

I am preparing a more "positive" list which I am sure make many skiers happy!

It is the "must do" list that all serious skiers MUST DO!

So,,,, stay tuned and think ,,,"snow"

Pavel

Alisairs,

Taking your skis to your bedroom is not a sin!

Taking them in your bed IS!

I did the half measure,,,,took them to my bedroom,,,,on the floor beside bed so I could touch them once in a while while sleeping! Of course this was done BEFORE I was married!

Now I just sneak down in the night go to my tuning room and make sure they are "ready" for me!
If questions are asked,,,,at my age I have an "excuse",,,,,,,,(which you will discover later) !

My kind of man Alistairs but not sure if I would share a room with you on a ski trip! My Fischers might "excite" you too much!!!!

Re:The Never List

Dave Mac,

I am not free of sins!

Yes I also "jumped" off a single chair lift that was stuck ( after 30 minutes)! Did not seem that high until free fall ! That soft powder snow seemed "soft" ! Never again!

As far as teaching skiing to wife,,kids,,,,remember you have to live with them after the lessons!

You all have given me an idea! I do get these great ideas once in a while!

We will start a SKI SIN list of worst SINS!

Persons can "confess" their sins and we will rate them!

1 = low level sin
10 = highest level sin

Every week we will rate these sins, I will get average and announce "weekly sinner winners" !

At end of month we can take weekly winners and vote on them to get "monthly" sin winner!
A small prize will be given!

Let me begin by "confessing" to this ski sin!

Many many years ago,,,,when I was young I did not have much money, but I had a passion skiing!

I could not afford ski clothing so I "made" my own!

I confess to taking an old army surplus green jacket from the Korean war ( most do not even know what this war was about)! I took an old raccoon fur coat, cut up sections and with fur made my own liner!

Not very fashionable, not very chic,,but in -30c it was great!

Problem was that wet fur gives off a special odor!
Problem was that OLD fur gives off another special odor!

I always wondered why I was alone going up a chair lift!

Now when I look at some old pictures,,,,I think of my sins!
Terrible look!

Looked like a "homeless" man!

It did serve me well for 10 years,,then I think my wife "forgot it" in the trash can !!!
Missed the memories,,but not the coat!

All you skiers who saw me then ( only a few now) please forgive me!

We are were only once!

It kept the passion alive!

Pavel

Re:The Never List

Hi Pavel, to post a picture should be similar for any OS.

The first thing you need to do is actually upload the picture to a website which will host images, ideally for free. I use http://www.photobucket.com but there are others. Simply create a free account with them, and upload the picture.

Once it is uploaded, you will get the actual location of the image from a box under the picture on the site, example.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/bullocks/tom1.gif

You then need to surround that with the IMG tags from this forum like this..

[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/bullocks/tom1.gif[/img]

Which will show the image in your post like this..

Hope that helps.

Re:The Never List

Pavel,
This is uncanny. My first ski wear was ~ home made ski pants, stitched together by the sister of a member of our folk group, ~ and my jacket was also ex-army camoflage, desert thickness, (ie, dead thin), five shillings from Ellis Brighams. That was when Ellis had only one shop, in Cathedral Street, Manchester. My skis were wooden base, painted, screw on edges, cable bindings, Elan Jets, GBP3.00, also Ellis Brigham. I am not even going to mention my first ski boots' suffice to say, four laces were involved!
My first racing skis were Kneissl White Star, 215cm. But they also had to double up as off piste skis. (since there were no piste machines!)

NEVER:
-Wait until a German leaves half a Wienerschnitzel., and then nip in quick, as he leaves, and finish it off before the waitress gets there.
-Seize an opportunity, like when a waitress delivers an ice cream desert to a drunken German, just as he is getting up to go to the toilet, and just never - nip across, eat the ice cream, and get back to your table, stare forlornly into your half empty glass of milk, and watch the German arrive back, gaze at the empty plate, scratch his head, and call for the bill.
-Cut a set of inner soles for your boots, from a carpet square hidden under the bed. Especially when you have to face the haus frau next season.

Re:The Never List

Dave Mac,

Ha,,,,the sins are coming out!
Ha,,,such wonderful sins !
Ha,,, such wonderful sinners.

The final message is; if you have a passion,,nothing will stop you! You will find the way to achieve this passion!

Never sit in a hot bathtub with your new leather boots for more than an hour!
Never sleep in the furnace room of the ski base lodge.
Never tell your parents "a friend has invited you to ski during Christmas"
Never let Warren Miller convince you to translate his jokes in French to a French audience ( silence)

Dave Mac,,,,I believe your mother had a twin ( and never told you) !

Now for a real sinful story!

Many years ago when skiing was not a tourist "attraction" there was a small village that had a shrine near a major ski center. Lots of hotels but only opened in the summer for the flock to ask for a miracle! In winter it was a ghost village,,except for a few sinners who "on Sunday would ski" ! It was at one time a sin NOT to go to church on Sunday!

I could not find a room so I asked directions to the next village from a priest ( who happened to be a concierge of a hostel) ! He was lonely and found me "different" (not his religion, young, not crippled, etc,,) . So we struck a bargain. He would let me stay at his "hostel" for free, if I would discuss "religious matters" with him for one hour in the evenings!
You see I had told him that I did not believe some of his concepts, some of his rituals and by chance I had just finished a university course in comparative religions of the world! In short I was cocky, full of my knowledge and yes a bit arrogant ( university education does that to young males)!
Every morning I would leave to ski just 1 km. away. Every night, after supper we would have "discussion" about his beliefs and my beliefs. The origins of holy water, the candles, the conflicting scriptures, the histories of popes and their wives ( of course mistresses), etc,,,, In my sinful arrogant way I held back no punches comparing others religions with his! Some historical truths are accepted by all but the faithful!

It was a delicious intellectual dual every night!

On the second night another priest "happened" to stop by!
On the third night another joined in our discussion!

You can see where this is going!

In my stupid arrogant manner I was "questioning" ,,no rejecting some fundamental concepts, practices, issues that others did not dare even consider!

I really must have been a strange sight to these priests. A young university educated boy who was so ignorant of the "important" aspects of life, death, the soul, hell, heaven etc,,,

I had a great ski week! They must of had a terrible week!

My sin ?

Well, 10 years later I am lecturing in a university and at the end of class a man comes up to me, smiles , extends his hand out and says, "thank you" !

I assumed it was for the lecture I just presented.

"I am here because of you" he continues. "Not only do I now ski but I have left the priesthood and becoming a psychiatrist" !

Some of you may have read his many books!

Pavel
A never ever item that many good skiers do!

You often see this sin on net!

It goes something like this;

Going to XYZ ski center and want to know where powder is?

Want to really know where pros, patrollers, regulars go for those hidden spots?

First never ask on net!!!! ( silly man/women might as well get a billboard)

Second never ask in parking lot!

Third never stop any of the above at base lodge and ask. That is "gauche" !

Then how do you find out where "stash", hidden pockets of treasure are ?

You have to be "accepted" as worthy of such a prize.

You must impress pros, guides, patrollers that you can keep up, ski at their level.
That you will not be a problem.

Finally that you will at end of day offer "thanks" in tangible ways such as a "beer" or two!

Au Contraire amigo!
I clean them down every day and wipe off water from them before packing them in the bag to bring them home (coach and plane normally) and by the time I unpack them the edges are starting to rust a little. They then go in for a service here at home which gets rid of the rust.
I do NOT however allow them to rust over a long period, that would be criminal.

Re:The Never List

OldAndy has missed the point.

Yes of course renting (hiring) skis and rust do not come together often!

OldAndy,
I never hire skis because;
never have top of the line skis for hire
never tuned correctly for me
I never wait in line for hire
I am on the hill before ski shop opens
my skis are never rusty !!!

90% of skis you "hire" are low end, not well tuned, few are bevelled or have a structure base! All have all round ,,all temperature wax which is applied via rollers.Never by irons!

Bindings on "hired" skis have DIN scale too low for my type of skiing!

Finally if you look carefully at most "hired" skis ( by putting them base to base),,you will note that the tips will tend curve apart very much like the modern "rocker" skis! Guess what this does to your skiing?
Why ?

Because many shops give out shorter skis to beginner/intermediate skiers. I often see men who are 6' 2" heavy set ( several several stone or in US 250 lbs) on 160 cm skis! Guess what happens to these skis over time! They bend at tips!

No,,the few seconds in using my rag on the edges is worth the pleasure of having tuned skis!

Finally, Andy,,,,I love to caress my skis to thank them for the pleasure they have given me all day! It is not a chore for me!

But then Andy,,that is just my choice !

Happy skiing!

Pavel
Sorry Bandit, I should have been more precise.

I was referring to to "ordinary" shaped skis in the 2010 circa!
Of course rockers are available,,but these have designed tips and tails that are curved upward at both ends and are for persons who know how to ski in soft powder conditions!

There is now a "discussion" among skiers in my area about the impact of rockers on hard well groomed slopes! Some say there will be a increase of accidents since again the effective ski edge available to skier is smaller! Time will tell!

If you look at rentals ( or skis for hire) then ,,by February tips begin to curve upward at 10-20 cm from tips,,due to "heavy use" and skiers that often are too heavy for type of ski!

That was my point!

Re:The Never List

Tony, the rust could be caused by water vapour condensing on the edges due to a drop in temperature during transit. It can easily be removed with a 'Gummi' stone, to prevent it you could, as Ian suggested rub some wax on the edges or cover them with masking tape. Don't worry about the glue blocking the 'pores' because there aren't any!

Pavelski, the skis you saw could have been carving / all mountain skis with early rise shovels
http://www.kaestle-ski.com/en/techcenter/ski-geometry/early-rise/

Rocker is now fitted to all types of ski, at all skill levels. For example, here is a 72mm waist ski from the current K2 catalogue:

http://k2skis.com/skis/men-s/velocity

Here is a different type of Rocker...
http://k2skis.com/skis/all-mountain/supersmooth

I doubt that a 72mm waist would be much good for soft powder.

I believe that the available edge for skiing is increased with Rocker, since the ski has less camber and more of the ski is in contact with the snow before any turn pressure is applied.

If you rent shagged out skis, then you'll get the performance appropriate to the rental. If there is insufficient DIN available at your local rental outlet, come and try mine. There are plenty of rental skis fitted with bindings which top out at DIN 16 in my local village ski shop. Would that DIN be more appropriate to your skill level?

Of course, my view is merely that of the punter, and should be read as such.

Bandit,
You are "modest" !

You are not just a punter ! Its birth was for powder skiing in + 50 cm. of snow ,,thus you could get an early float !

My point was not to get into the pros and cons of such a ski! That is up to each skier to try them and decide. My point was to comment on why I never hire ski !

Punter,,you are not Bandit!

Smart women you are!

But can we agree,,,to have different opinions ,,different points of views ?

Sorry, but I will not hire ( rent ) skis,,ever !

Have a nice skiing season.

Respectfully,
Pavel

Only when the ski is flat. Once on edge, the effective edge increases with the edge angle. So much so, that most of the shovel is engaged. This gives these skis a longer effective edge than a conventional camber ski of the same length. What has made more difference to the turning performance of these skis is the compound sidecut where a combination of small and large radius curves enables ski to carve much smaller radius turns than the average sidecut (given in the specs) would suggest. I think this is what the recent FIS changes were trying to counter in the name of safety.

Ha,,,,,Trencher

The super carver is back !

I hope you have had a great summer and getting into ski mode!

Excellent point concerning the "carving" ability of those rockers. Yes on paper that is what should happen!

Can you grant me this point?

Look at skiers in the 19-30 age group ( of course excluding you) and watch them ski ! What percentage carve a turn,,or ski from edge to edge and what percentage "swivel, rotate on bases to do "tricks" !

What I have observed in my area is that "carvers",,skiers who are technically proficient in the modern ski technique stick to shaped skis in the high performance level!

The rockers are used mostly by "freeriders",,,those younger more "off-the piste" individuals who are looking for the "virgin" snow!

Season 2012 will tell show how such skis will do in real life on the slopes!

I tested last year some of the coming rockers at the industry ski show!  Yes great turns and holding power at soft well groomed runs. BUT;
-do not hold tails during the turn till the very end of turn like on a SL World Cup ski,,,,! It will NOT zing you out to next turn. Rather you will flow out of the turn with a soft tail!

- on flats ( at base, on traverse sections) be very careful

As I noted,,2012 will show us !

Have a great winter season!

Pavel

Re:The Never List

The rockers are used mostly by "freeriders",,,those younger more "off-the piste" individuals who are looking for the "virgin" snow!

No, this is old thinking. Rocker technology now exists in all ski types, and at all skiing levels. The links to 2 K2 ski models that I provided to you, are in no way off piste/advanced/freeride skis. Some skis have tip Rocker only, tails are traditional.
Do not confuse Twin Tips with Rocker, they are different.

Many ski makers are offering Rocker technology. I skied using early Rocker tech back in 2008/2009. I used a new pair last year, which I purchased for piste use. They carve very nicely, they are a fairly stiff, metal laminated ski AFAIR. I used them when I was having tuition in Chamonix, which was solely piste work. Skis which have Rocker can be longer, which is an advantage in soft snow, so the freeride models have long soft tips and tails which engage easily in powder. The downside of that, is that they flap like birds on hard piste
I had a good fondle of the Storm range at the Show. I thought they seemed light and well balanced, and the paint jobs were ace. Nothing in their lineup that fitted what I was looking for. I've not seen a pair in use anywhere, which makes me think that they've not been selling enough. A Boutique ski range, amongst lots of others.

If you fancy something mainstream, I'd suggest the Dynastar Sultan 85 might be worth testing. I'm using the Sultan 80's and they are surprisingly versatile. I saw lots of the 85's in rental racks in Chamonix, which I take to be a good sign, because they ski well, and if there are lots....there will be bargains.

Movement are also worth checking out, but OH says you're not getting near his Thunders :P

Amen to that, I bought a board last winter with reverse camber and rockered tip and tail. Effectively the board is curved longitudinally from the centre and curved upwards/outwards at the edge of the traditional points of contact. Now on powder and happily on tracked out off-piste this is awesome as it's very hard to catch an edge. It even performs well at speed on piste, and given the curve from the centre especially well in moguls, but drop the speed, lose concentration for a second on a flat or try and use a surface lift and it's useless.

SwingBeep,
Often skiers ask me, "what is the best ski,,,," ? The word they forget to place in those comma spaces is " for me" !

Then the next question is,,,,"what kind of skiing do you MOSTLY do? "

All skis are great these days !

The trick is to find a ski that fits your "skiing desires" !

The worst place to discover this is in the "marketing blurs" on net, in magazines and TV !

Be honest to yourself ! Do you want model XZY because it is the newest thing on slopes, the status ski or wildest graphics or because it makes you soar like Icarus with it !

It is up to each skier to discover that special ski !

But first,,,,,,, you must learn to ski effectively!

That is the "catch 22" !

All skis are great these days!

This simply isn't true; there are still considerable differences in performance and quality of construction between skis sold by the major manufacturers. In general skis with wooden cores and sidewalls perform better and last longer than cap skis, especially the ones with foam-injected cores.

From time to time Stiftung Warentest (a German consumer organisation) carries out ski tests.
In addition to performance tests (which are carried out in accordance with ISO 8783: Alpine skis -- Guidelines for conducting slope performance tests) they also measure the thickness of the edges, the flatness of the bases, determine the pull out strength of the edges and carry out impact tests on the tips and tails. Although they are in German and not up to date, the tables in these pdfs should give you some idea of what to be wary of.

http://www.test.de/themen/freizeit-reise/test/Carvingskier-Head-und-Voelkl-vorn-1725172-1728805/

http://www.test.de/themen/freizeit-reise/test/Carvingskier-Racer-machen-das-Rennen-1590245-1594928/
Re:The Never List

I think the point pav was making, is that skis are rather like cars (and so many other things we use). While it is true the one car may be better than another, compared to thirty years ago they are nearly all good. Design, technology and material make today's cheap ski perform better than most from years ago.

Re:The Never List

SwingBeep,
Yes Trencher, understood my point. I perhaps did not express myself clearly.

Let me try again.

First SwingBeep, you are very correct in noting that there are differences in ski construction and ski performance. If you have read some of my previous posts you will note that I mention this over and over again. That is the challenge for all skiers to find THE ski that fits their : price range, ability level and expectations!

In 2011 all the "low quality", inferior skis are gone ! The market is just to competitive ! Those companies that made "furniture", made aircrafts, that made armaments and on the side made also skis,,,,well they are gone ! Ski production is now controlled by huge "investment" companies and production is very technical.

My point was addressed to beginner skiers and not "sophisticated" , knowledgeable skiers like you ! Few skiers would know the difference in the Rockwell hardness of a ski edge or the thickness of two layers of Zincral !

There are other sites for experts in this matter. There they debate such technical matters!

On this site skiers what to find a ski that will make skiing "fun" that is relatively lower cost and not fall apart after one or two skiing trips! ( except for a few fanatics which will not be mentionned since everyone on this site knows them )I was addressing my comments to them.

Thank you however for making the point to others on how skis do vary in performance and construction. Also thank you for sharing the excellent Austrian site which lists skis !

One question to you SwingBeep in regards to that list.
Do you know the difference between criterion referenced evaluation of skis and normative referenced evaluation of skis ?

To really understand those charts,,one must understand how the evaluation is done!

Those ++++++ are based on skier's expectations,,standards or comparison of tested skis for that year? Understand my point ?

Respectfully,
Pavel

That is another story !

I am sure you did it with style !

The question begs to be asked,,,,,"were you on the ski slope when you got married" ? If so yes,,then you are "classic" !

Welcome back !

Pavel

Re:The Never List

One question to you SwingBeep in regards to that list.
Do you know the difference between criterion referenced evaluation of skis and normative referenced evaluation of skis?

Yes, these are two-part tests. In the first part the skis are compared with each other to assess which performs best on snow; this is a norm-referenced test. In the second part the skis were subjected to physical tests. In one of these tests 17 Joules were applied to the inside edges of the skis in order to simulate catching an edge on a rock; this is a criterion- referenced test. Three of the skis purchased from one manufacture failed this test, one also failed the impact test (part of the base delaminated) and they all had thinner edges and therefore thinner bases than the other skis.

There is a key to the scoring system below the tables which translates as follows:

++ = very good (80-100%)
+ = good (60-79.99%)
O  = average 40- 69.99%)
(-) = below average (20-35.99%)
- = unsatisfactory 0-19.99%)

In 2011 all the "low quality", inferior skis are gone!

Hope you're right, but I'm far from convinced.

Getting back to the never list. How about Never, Never Ever throw up in the cable car!
SwingBeeep,

You have truly made that "terrible behavior" the top of my list ( and in a cable car) ugh !!!!!.

Never happened to me and I hope it never happens!

I have seen the results of such poor behavior on the slopes! Luckily I was able to ski away "fast" !

Thanks for the information on normative and criterion evaluation.

If you have a chance visit the Realskier.com site for relevant evaluation results. One of the very few places that do not accept skis from companies and who will not allow ski companies to "help them" in their evaluation.

Re:The Never List

Bandit,
We are far off the never list, but let me answer your "hesitations" !

First I am not registered to this paying site.
I have nothing to do with this site,,except that I ski with some of the testers and we do discuss ski performances.
My point was this. If you want to get an "expert" opinion on what a ski can do and its performance range then rather than just read from all sorts of "experts" ( some good some,,,,,,) then try out this site!

In my opinion it is the very best site of non-biased ski information. Just read the text on ski binding placement !

Bandit, we all make choices in life. Is the "entry" fee worth the information. That is for each person to decide.

Dave, this site's guru makes the decision to have some ads on the side. What kind of ads and information he allows is his choice.

Skiers who want to be educated, informed about skiing have many sources. It is up to each person to decide which source is appropriate.

Now back to the Never Ever List !

A friend in the ski business ( a ski area manager ) mentioned some never ever items ski resorts have done!

1. Refused a blind man to bring his dog in hotel ! Clerk did not know he was blind!!!!!
2. Play Rap Music at 8 AM during a seniors gathering
3. Fire a ski patroller who took a skiers ticket for skiing off limits
4. Ski instructor allows a 5 years old to go off alone ( from class) to chalet to see mother!
5. New ski resort management, declines to recognize "life time" season passes given by former ski resort owner!

More to come!

Pavel

Oh yes,,,,,

the most dangerous never!

The never behavior that many males do ,,but should not to their "friends"

It is,,,taking their beginner friends up to very top ( to see view of course) and then taking them down that "easy" run !!!

Many a skier stopped skiing after that.
Many a skier ended up in patrol hut.
Many a skiers lost friends.

Leave your beginner friends alone with a pro!

Pavel

The idea is that your ski boots are your most important piece of equipment. If you have spend a lot of time and money getting the perfect pair (with all the custom adjustments and fitting), then having to make do with a rental pair when the airline loses your bag would be a disaster. In the US and Canada at least, there is no problem putting your boots in your carry on bag. I've read it's more restrictive n Europe.

Re:The Never List

I would agree with the premise of taking boots on board. You wouldn't put a GBP300 camera, or a GBP500 laptop into the hold luggage. Well fitting boots are priceless. One issue, is there are many reports of boots not being allowed through security as hand baggage. Yes, I know there are thousands of cases, maybe even the majority, where they are allowed as hand baggage, but it introduces uncertainty.
