I like to have a left and right ski and you will find that out when you use them ...... expense, air transport costs for one is always a consideration but the pro's out weigh the cons :D

Ian, you say the pros out weigh the cons. For the benefit of someone like me who is constantly mulling over this choice, could you just summarise what you believe the pros of having your own skis are ?

I'll try and list some pros and cons ......

Pros
1. No more waiting around in ski shops
2. No need to get used to different types of skis
3. Skis that will always be in top condition

Con's

1. Initial expense
2. Service costs
3. Transport costs
4. Lugging around a heavy ski bag.
5. Theft of your skis is a consideration

Now I could sit here adding more to the list but I have to go to Heathrow in an hour and I have not had lunch !!!
IMO for intermediates and above buy your own.

i'll second that i'm immediate (i think) happy on blues and reds but need lots more hours, the feel of the skis i have just brought are totally different to anything i have hired, i have far more control and they certainly make it a lot easier, hiring costs are just far to much for me, last year on 2 hols cost me as much as to buy my new ones its a no brainer to rent as far as i can see

I mentioned this in another thread that the ski shops have missed a trick as it is still cheaper to transport your skis e.g. Easy jet as to hire in resort. Around about 10% would do the trick but then again I don't think the hire shops would want me as a customer as I would not be palmed off with rubbish. Now I really do have to get to Heathrow

I hired K2's True Luvs last ski holiday, and they were okay - nothing exciting and a bit slow (even after I had them waxed) but they were fine on and off the piste and in the powder.

Ally

Heres what I think are some pros and cons ......

Pros
1. No more waiting around in ski shops to rent second rate equipment or be fobbed off with something that isnt right for you
2. No need to get used to different types of skis as you'll know what your own can do
3. Skis that will always be in top condition, providing you service them
4. You get attached to your skis and treat them like a friend, no more shouting at the horrible rentals that dont do what you want them to
5. You grow in confidence and develop and try out other kinds of terrain and slopes
6. They're yours and no one elses
7. You can learn to service your own skis, gives a tremendous feeling of satisfaction

Con's

1. Initial expense may be high, but shop around and compare
2. Service costs could be GBP25 full service, GBP15 edge and wax
3. Transport costs when flying can be as much as GBP56 on BA return
4. Lugging around a heavy ski bag - some people see this is a problem which it need not be, as you'll only have to move them from the car/taxi to the trolley, and pick them up the other end. Dont let this put you off
5. Theft of your skis is a consideration, and getting more commonplace, buy a lock if you're worried about it
6. You may outgrow your skis if you develop, or find them too restrictive on certain terrain or different conditions
7. You're now addicted, theres no turning back )

I've owned 4 pairs of skis in 6 years now.

Yes apparently, I too have bought beginner/intermediate skis, (according to the web sites!). I guess that is why I could only make 98.92 kph on wet snow.

BANDIT!
No idea of the number of days Wickers, but I started using them in 2006. The ski shop might be a bit heavy handed with the edge grinding as you say!
I keep on getting core shots now, and it's odd because the base material always seemed very tough. What are you using to repair core shots?

Re:OMG I'm in love

Seems that the favourite option is a layer of epoxy at the base of the hole about half filled then the rest filled with P-tex, seems simple enough, I'll have to get my chisall out on an old set of skis and give it a go. :D

Yes apparently, I too have bought beginner/intermediate skis, (according to the web sites!). I guess that is why I could only make 98.92 kph on wet snow.

BANDIT! I traded in my 210 Blizzard Firebirds in Colorado, after only 26 years of usage, and I felt then that they were only just worn in. How is it possible to wear out skis?

Maybe skis were made different back then, but after 4 years of use (possibly about 120-140m days total) my first ever pair of skis virtually lost the camber. Edges and bases are also prone to wear.

Re:OMG I'm in love

Core shots are usually repaired by first applying a foundation layer of Metal Grip (a mixture of polyethylene and heat-sensitive adhesive that adheres better to fibreglass and metal than normal P-tex repair material) to the exposed core and then filling the rest of the hole with the P-tex repair material of your choice.

P-tex repair materials are not made of sintered UHMWPE like P-tex bases are, as it's not possible to heat sintered UHMWPE to its melting point without changing its molecular structure, so the repair materials are made of softer extruded PE. Drip candles are the softest, p-tex string is about as hard as extruded base material and p-tex repair ribbon is the hardest (almost as hard as sintered base material) but it's harder to apply.

Alternatively you could use a 2 component methacrylate adhesive, such as this:
http://www.bondrite.co.uk/structural-acrylics/methacrylates/black-medium-cure-thixotropic-acrylic-50ml/prod_120.html just fill the hole proud, leave it set overnight and file / scrape it back to the level of the base.

The construction of top quality skis has changed remarkably little since the Blizzard Firebird era, although shapes and flex patterns have obviously changed enormously. They still have sidewalls and wood cores that are sandwiched between layers of fibreglass and in some designs aluminium alloy and they are still laid up by hand using a 2 component epoxy laminating adhesive.

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheSLsport#p/a/u/1/uPRW60ek1AY

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheSLsport#p/a/u/0/SbwYTjDhI-0

A pair of 160cm Gotbacks weigh 3.38kg whereas the a pair of 163cm Auras weigh 3.20kg which is a surprisingly small difference when you take into consideration the extra with of the Gotbacks, perhaps it's because the Gotbacks don't have any sidewalls or metal in them and the core is made from soft woods instead of hard woods.
Re:OMG I'm in love

West System Epoxy is a marine grade epoxy used in boat building and repairs, their 650-8 G/Flex epoxy is a good choice for repairing delaminations.

Bandit, bear in mind that your bases are now very thin, so it might be a bit tricky to get a layer of Metal Grip and a layer of P-tex into the core shots. I would give the methacrylate a go. I first found out about it via this German shop http://www.rain-sport.de/rain-sportde/Belagbearbeitung/Belag-Reparaturmaterial/Belag-Reparatur-Power-Repair-Kartusche-schwarz
I'm convinced (and so are you) that my bases are so thin, that I won't get too much chance to use any repair materials.....and so justifying swapping my bindings over onto my new K2's :D

I now have some Metal Grip....for when I do damage to my Movements, Dynastar's and K2's and my OH decides to follow me

Re:OMG I'm in love

I think the Stocklis still have a bit of life left in them. The shop said they would stand one more grind which you haven't had done yet, but as the risk of ripping an edge out increases as the base gets thinner I think it would be prudent to swap the bindings over before the start of next season. The Stocklis don't owe you anything and having to come back down to the village in the middle of the day to get the bindings swapped would be a real PITA!

Re:OMG I'm in love

Surely it is cheaper to get a second hand pair on ebay? Is it just a sentimental thing? I used to love my C9's until I realized how badly they were suited to my skiing. Last season I picked up a good pair of wide twin tips with rental bindings for about 100 quid from a gear exchange shop in Canada. I bet you'd end up paying more to repair a de-lamination than this.

I always think it is a profound disrespect to skis to put them on the wall. Every time I see ski's on the wall of a ski bar, I imagine they are silently weeping in remembrance of their former glory days. I prefer the old tradition of offering burning skis to Ullr.

http://www.skircr.com/matts-blog/?tag=/ullr

It is an honourable farewell to old skis.

With modern, non-wooden skis, ebay is probably better.
