Oh Dear its gone quite out there!

That means the end of the season is nye . On reflection, the snow has been very poor in many places this season however, we enjoyed our trips to Obergurgl, Serre Che and Andorra being very lucky with the conditions in resort. Just think of the fun we will all have researching and then booking our trips for next season :D

We will not ski in December this year but move into early January and try a new resort in Austria. February's group trip is likely to be in Italy possibly Sauze d'Oulx, I love Sauze and March hopefully in the Southern Alps skiing some more runs in Serre Che

Anyone, got any plans on the backburner for next season :)

Sounds good Debiski, I would love to go to Lech or Stuben however, it is sooo expensive if you plan to go on other trips later in the season. I am looking at more cost effective options. I like the look of Schladming with trees if its snowing and 175kms of piste. I have heard that its good value also in terms of food and drink with some nice mountain huts. Although not the highest resort it has a good snow record. Well back to the research

Re:Oh Dear its gone quite out there!

In the US Midwest, we had an incredible season. Fresh snow (what seemed like) every few days, and only one warm week with sloppy conditions (I was in Utah that week). Snow canons only used in early November for a few days. For the first time that I can remember, my appetite is sated, and I'm ready for spring.

Packing today for a visit to Tignes tomorrow
Weather forecast is hilarious !!
Sunny Monday morning then snow ! Which will be rain at resort level but up high on the glacier - snow.
Could be very interesting conditions. Fair bit still open, links and runs back to resort, and I WILL have a great time.

Alistair,
I'd like to go back to Courchevel, but get a 3 Valleys pass this time and ski out of the Courchevel valley in the afternoons after my lesson.

The problem is I'd like to go with the same group of people as last year but the only week we're all free without missing any school is the actual Christmas week, and I'd hate to be away from home for Christmas. As far as I can remember I've had Christmas here for the last 30 years. Plus, I wouldn't like to leave any family members behind, so we'd have to bring another 5 people with us!

If one of us misses 2 days of school (and why on earth is his school going back on a Thursday anyway?) then we could go the week of 31st Dec to Sat 7th Jan. But the problem with that is that if we go back on the Eurostar night train again it means trying to get back home from London Sunday morning on New Year's Day by train, and I don't suppose they'll be running. In fact, come to think of it, the Eurostar night train might not be running on New Year's Eve

I should think the Eurostar tickets will come on sale in July, like last year, so I've got until then to decide what to do.

Ally

Re:Oh Dear its gone quite out there!

I try to avoid being a creature of habit, and i made my last trip to Mayrhofen this season just gone, as i dont feel the need to return to ski it for a 7th time. Having said that, I'd happily go back to Serre Che again as I think the ski area there is fantastic. Theres a big old world of skiing out there, so it seems a shame to keep going back to the same places over and over.

I skied St Moritz for the first time in Jan, and the skiing there was top drawer, helped by incredibly good snow conditions, so I'd consider a return there next year for one of the 3 planned trips.

I think its time I stopped talking about going to the Dolomites and did it at last, so thats maybe the January trip. Serre Che would be an option for a long weekend over Easter maybe depending on how the snow holds up, which we did last year and it was superb.

So, no real plans as yet. It depends on whos going to be coming with us, when we go, and what others throw into the hat as well. The consensus does seem to be for a return to St Moritz though, so maybe that could be the March trip, as I think Dolomites would be better in Jan.

I'd like to squeeze a pre Xmas trip in to somewhere like St Anton if poss, but that might be pushing it a little!!!!!

Now thoughts are moving on to upcoming summer trips, and an imminent long weekend in Rome followed by 10 days in Thassos in June, and a planned week somewhere in September which hasn't been booked yet, still trying to find a really good deal.

Re:Oh Dear its gone quite out there!

Thanks Tony, that sounds like four trips  or three planned and one flexy. Still you can't take it with you so enjoy it while you can. Thats my motto. We would jump at the Arlberg but with four skiers in our party it becomes mega expensive and so we are looking for cheaper options for Austria in January. Schladming is looking a good bet at the present time.

Good Idea Ian, I've just started back at the gym. I do a five mile brisk walk and run on a hill program and do some weights on thighs and calfs. I do this once or twice a week right up to the winter season. It keeps these old bones going however, not sure they will make old bones :(

Re:Oh Dear its gone quite out there!

Well, the season's last knockings are here, and I'm having a short few days in Tignes at the end of next week. Am assured there will be snow, but will take my walking boots just in case. Good advice re the bike over the summer - must try it !

Well .......
Firstly my apologies, I intended to write something and also a general thank you to everyone but when I started the words wouldn't flow.
I have been grieving the end of the ski season! This year feels like a "season" to me - a great hol early on and another right at the end with a huge amount of fun in between, thanks to the forum.
For the first time in many years a couple of weeks skiing just wasn't enough
And I'm finding that tough!
But - back to Tignes.
A wonderful time was had - snow; typical spring, ranging from solid ice to knee deep slush as you would expect. With powder, blizzards, white outs, rain, blazing sunshine all mixed in! +8C to -11C at 3200m was noted over the week.
The snow up really high was lovely but visibility meant that we had to pick and choose our time up there.
The best part was that my sister can still ski - she has had some serious surgery on her back since she last skied and so was a little nervous.
The funniest part was my niece - 24yo, seriously fit (rows for her University), who could not understand why the two old codgers didn't get as tired as she was!
I took pity on her later in the week
She said "wow - that's so easy!"
Just about letting the hill take down the speed at the end of the turn (ie: finish the turn) rather than braking and using muscles so much.
He He He
Thanks for your comments and here's to the next time on skis.
