Gonna book for Montgenevre!

Hi everyone, just after some advice from people who have been to Montgenevre.
I have previously been skiing to Passo Tonale for my first trip and then i went to La Plagne last year which was amazing!
There's a group of 5 of us of similar ability and we wanted somwehere which was a mix of the two places i had been and Montgenevre seemed a really nice place. Small local area with the option of going further afield if we wanted.
We are gonna go self catering this time and have booked some really nice apartments.
Is there enough pubs to keep us entertained at night?

I've read that the snow is pretty guaranteed but read a few reports that the link over to sestriere and Sauze d'oulx is not always open - has anyone experienced this?

I'd be tempted with Sauze d'Oulx if you want entertaining at night.
I think the Sauze/Sestriere ski pass gives you 1 day in Montegenevre - not sure what the Montegenevre one gives you in terms of the Italian side.

A friend who was staying in Sestriere was having coffee in Montegenevre by 10:30 am just over an hour after setting off.
I'm not sure how reliable the snow on the linking runs is.

I've been to Sauze twice and skied in Sestriere almost every day each time, and had a day over in MontG each time too. The skiing in MontG is nice, but theres not a lot of it. Good for early intermediates, but nothing too testing, and the links can often be closed or difficult as the snow is erratic in the area. MontG often gets the best snow on the Milky Way, but the town is better suited to those who don't like to party of anyone from Surrey called Giles who owns a yacht )

Personally, if you want somewhere in the area to ski with a varied nightlife (take it or leave it basically), great ski area, guaranteed snow most of the season, and some nice rustic places to stay, head just over the pass to Serre Chevalier (Monetier or Villeneuve for the older rustic parts).

Hey Tony, My butler's name is Giles, I'm a party animal but someones nicked my yacht. :wink: :lol:

Montgenevre is one of our favourite resorts. It has guaranteed snow and for mileage hungry skiers you can access hundreds of kms though if you fancy doing the Milky Way we'd recommend starting from the gondola in Sansicario (15 min drive, free parking)to ensure you can get back OK - we speak from experience!
Nightlife is minimal but the pubs are friendly and most lively early evening. It's not too far to drive down to Briancon for more variety but this is not a party party area and the previous comment about going to the more lively villages in Serre Chevalier may suit you better.

Great website. I really wanted to go to MontG this year but for some reason we changed our minds - maybe lack of availability among tour operators, or perhaps long transfers. Can't remember exactly. Would prefer to fly into Turin if it means a short transfer. Will keep a close eye on the snow this year and definitely consider MontG, maybe with a diy option rather than a package.

Turin is really close, just 1 and a half hours transfer. Some friends who took their young family to Claviere (next to Montgenevre) on a package flew into Turin - all went very smoothly. You'll also find that the road into Montgenevre from Italy and the Frejus tunnel is usually much less prone to being blocked by snow than the Col du Lauterets route from Genoble.
