Skiing Technique, warming up and streching.

Hello, i am currently doing a school project on skiing, specifically on the different techniques people use and whether or not they warm up and strech before/after skiing.
To help me conduct this research i would like it if you could answer these questions. If this could be done before the 30th of march then this would be thoroughly appreciated.
1) please describe (if you can)the technique you use when skiing.
2) do you warm up before skiing :?:
3) if you do warm up before skiing then what do you do :?:
4) do you strech before skiing :?:
5) if you do strech before skiing then what do you do :?:
:D Thanks, SkiingProject

Not sure really  , pretty much self taught after a few lessons as a kid. (Now an old git of 37.) Lower intermediate probably as I enjoy blasting blues or trying to develop better technique on reds.

skiingproject wrote:2) do you warm up before skiing :?:

Not before but I treat the first run of the day as a means of loosening up. No thinking about technique just getting my skiing legs back under me.

skiingproject wrote:3) if you do warm up before skiing then what do you do :?:

skiingproject wrote:4) do you stretch before skiing :?:

Nope. Always did before rugby or karate but not before skiing. Probably because normal skiing will keep the range of movement well within the natural range that my joints are happy to cope with. (The joy of staying fairly flexible 20 years after becoming flexible.)

N/A

Good luck with the project. If you ever do a follow up on what people do for ski fitness I'd love to read it. Having once tried to train for rugby by cycling over the summer holidays it became clear that exercising the correct muscle groups was the key, I soon found out that cycling fitness has sod all to do with running fitness!

Cheers,

Owen.

Technique, when skiing - not sure there's an answer to this, other than.....well, skiing?

I always warm up first thing in the morning before I leave the hotel or chalet, this usually involves stretching my calves and hammies, a few squats to stretch the quads, and some arm rotations to loosen up the upper body.
I also use the first run of the day as a bit of a warm up, but I find the stretches help.
I'm not a keep fit fanatic at all, but I do find these little stretches do help me.

Re:Skiing Technique, warming up and streching.

I never do any warm up exercises in the morning. I find the effort of getting kitted up and walking in my ski boots carrying skis up gondola steps etc. warms me up quite sufficiently! And so far I haven't damaged any of my muscles etc. ski-ing on snow. I think what's very important is getting fit and doing specific ski exercises before the holiday.

The only time I ever have done a warm up is when I'm actually ski-ing and it's perishing cold and we have to wait a few minutes at the top of the gondola before starting - in which case I swing my arms about and do squats and star jumps etc. wearing my skis.

I don't think one can describe ski-ing technique in a couple of sentences. It's all about keeping your balance, staying in a relaxed but active position, and shifting your weight and bending your legs and hips to get the skis to go where you want them to.

Ally

Re:Skiing Technique, warming up and streching.

Is this common, like Ally, for people not to do any kind of stretching before skiing in the morning? I wouldn't dream of going out there without giving the old calves at least a good pull.

Re:Skiing Technique, warming up and streching.

My warm up is occassionaly a few back rotations in the chalet, but the basic warm up is walking up about 95 steps with ski boots on and carrying skis to the main cable car lift. Plus doing up ski boots gives a good hamstring stretch and lower back stretch.

Re:Skiing Technique, warming up and streching.

I agree with Tropicana, walking up a zillion steps carrying ski gear is a very good warm up :D

Last holiday I made a point of refusing to use the lift in the apartment block and walking down the four floors to the ski locker room, and then also refusing the lift in the gondola station and walking up those stairs as well wearing ski boots and carrying skis.

The other thing I try and do is get to the gondola station as soon as it opens so I'm not standing about in a queue in the cold. And then we usually have about 20 minutes spare before the lesson to either sit in a nice warm restaurant and drink hot chocolate or go for a warm-up run. And, in any case, the instructors usually take us down an easy run to begin with, as a warm up.

Ally

I am with the majority in that i feel that the trek to the slope in a pair of very heavy boots and carrying the planks warms me up sufficiently ...best of luck with your project but remember to do a spell check ..streching ...stretching

Daved,
That's a good point about the weight. I know my ski boots weigh 5 Kg, although I don't know about the skis but they feel pretty heavy to me, especially when I have to carry them upright, like up the gondola steps. I can carry skis over my shoulder like a sack of corn for miles no problem, but vertically I find much harder.

Ally

11 Kg! Really  No wonder my hand was aching carrying my skis up the gondola steps - note to self - must devise fitness exercise for hand strength for next year

That makes a total weight for skis and boots of 16 Kg which is 35lbs, or 2 1/2 stone. Wow. No wonder there's a section in my 'get fit to ski' book on weight lifting.

Ally

That weight seems quite exceptional. By comparison my Movement Black Roses, at 165cm with Dynastar PX12 bindings, come in at 5.3 kg. Which is a bit more manageable.
