Other Sports, Interests and Thrills.....

I was just wondering if any other J2Skiers seek thrill from other sports during the off season?
As my next Ski trip is not until 2012 i was considering resurrecting my Skydiving past, which i put on hold when my daughter was born.
I would love to get back into it and maybe progress onto my ultimate ambition to try my hand at Base Jumping.

Other than that i don't really partake of any other sports, apart from riding my bike.

How do you get your off season thrills?

Which is very tame when compared to skydiving. I suppose I don't need to get thrills, just being in the mountains is enough. I also spend time on the Med which is extremely peaceful, sunny and warm 8)

Sadly the highest summit around locality is a 60's tower block!

For me it the Gym, swimming, jogging, walking...not much thrill involved, but I enjoy keeping fit and so ready for the next ski trip !
The most important and enjoyable time of the year.

I tried that once and it really freaked me out.I had a major panic attack at abput 10 meters as it suddenly felt very unnatural. I dont this the face mask helped at all as i can be slightly claustrophobic.

Gardening, cleaning and walking.

I tried scuba diving once, and I found it pretty frightening as well - not my sort of thing at all. I like the sun and the wind on my face. But best of luck with it :D

Sailing, however, I do like and I used to do a lot of it - but not now because I'm too busy with other things.

Our garden/s is about half an acre and it takes me about 4 hours just to cut all the grass and a lot of the work is more like forestry because we have so many trees and bushes. We also have a huge pond where mallards and moorhens nest in the summer, so I have to clean the ditches as well. I actually like that kind of outdoor work and it keeps me pretty fit as well :D

I'm a bit worried about that as well but think I will be okay, I love the water. I intend to do this at home as I live by the sea so that I dont have a freak out on holiday and look a prat. Being a surfer and snorkeller used to wet suits and masks, so prepared to give it a try

I used to be a mad keen windsurfer, but since small person arrived (almost 13 yrs ago) I've done much more sailing instead as it's more family friendly. Although my garage is a shrine to my windsurfing days, I've just never got back into it. We try to get to the North Norfolk coast as often as possible during the summer to sail there. On a day to day basis, I do quite a lot of running & occasional MTB days out.

I would never in a million years bungee jump, parachute jump....and as for base jumping :shock: . I've tried cleaning a few times too, but to be honest it's way too radical for me :mrgreen:

I love running, tennis, white water rafting and also enjoy sailing as well as jetskiing (hope to buy one this year, but I said that last year) caving but not done this since uni.

Skiing is my 1st love - but as it's obviously not something I can do all the time (or even once this season) :( I do a lot of horse riding.

Sometimes when I'm out in the forest and can see the pine trees stretched ahead of me looking beautiful with frost on I try to imagine I'm in a ski resort about to catch the 1st lift of the day. (I have a good imagination!!)

I've ridden all my life and it's great fun, but nothing that I've found beats skiing for me. The snow and mountains just make me :D :D :D :D :D

Besides skiing i love to go mountain biking, riding my road bikes and playing golf.... Probably once a month we also go walking which i love. Would like to go for a holiday in the mountains walking and mountain biking in summer... 1 day.

The mountains are lovely in the summer. We went last summer to Megeve and I was surprised how much there was to do. We took the traintram up Mont Blanc then walked all the way down.
Swimming, mountain walking, biking, Lugeing (toboggan type dry land things on wheels). This coming summer we hope to do some gentle white water rafting with 10 yr old son, and maybe horse riding.

I agree mountains in summer are beautiful but for me I try and cycle as much as I can to try and keep the weight down but I guess most of my spare time is taken up running Little W all over the place, this summer we are looking at camping in the south of France.
And you don't realise how hard it has been twisting Mrs W's arm :D

I would like to camp in the south of france, we did this some years ago in a pre erected tent by coach. But i don't think i could do the drive with all associated gear.
We will be camping in cornwall this year and maybe a few other spots in june/july. We were hoping to break out the canvas at easter but i fear it may be too cold so we are currently looking at a week in Spain or the Canaries instead.
Windsurfing, as already mentioned, sounds interesting.....i may the give that a whirl! i hear Fuerteventura may be the place for that!

Camped in the Ardeche region of France a few years, took all the associated stuff which was fine. We had a great time, but one thing I really remember is DUST! Everywhere, because it was so dry.
Fun though. Did that for week then drove to the Alps and stayed in La Clusaz for a week in a chalet. Wonderful - and they have a summer luge.
Did the train ride up to the Mer de Glace in Cham but the Aiguille du midi cable car was closed due to high winds.

The tents first outing is on the weekend of the Royal wedding, a long weekend up on the North
Norfolk coast, I shall be taking my heater, and then a week in the south of France without heater, we have found a couple of nice smaller sites with access to the beach so should be Ok.

Ian - Do you find it a little far for a week? Driving all that way, tent up and down and drive back in a week sounds like an awful lot of trouble for me.

We will have an overnight stop on the way down and back, but I enjoy driving and the drive is all part of the holiday. I can't take two weeks off together because of the business but rest assured it will be a fantastic week :thumbup:

We used to drive down to the Costa Brava in Spain, 1 overnight stop on the way is all you need. Some fantastic little resorts, all free of commercialism when you look east of Girona.
Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc, Port Bou and Tamariu are my favourites.

Have stayed in Calella de Palafrugell many times, the botanical gardens to the cliff walk to Llafranc
a nice part of the world for a holiday :thumbup:

When not skiing (or planning next year's trip(s)) I also enjoy horse riding (which takes up most of my spare time), gardening, cooking and curling up with a good book and a glass of wine. Walking and mountain biking occasionally, when I have the time.

Summer hols never seem to happen as faced with a choice of skiing or a week in the sun, well... there's no contest really!! :lol:

Austria, Turkey, Italy although my first time was in North Wales. I will PM you a couple of links in the next day or two.

To add to my list snowmobiling! Although a couple of years ago I came of at high speed and have not done it since.

I sort of like horse riding, but a bit scared of horses.

Not far away, Blakeney is one of our favourite North Norfolk places, there are bout five families from our village camping, there are a couple of new-bees where if the weather is inclement will be booking into a hotel for the weekend, but us we are hardcore :lol:

The closest I came to camping was a Eurosites tent in Catalonia. Carrying washing up to a communal sink and taking a communal dump were too much for me, and we upgraded to a mobile home.
That was when we were poor and couldn't afford proper holidays.
I like a hotel with an air conditioned room and a sauna nowadays )

Maybe I've been unlucky but camping trips I've taken in the UK have been more than cool - they've been freezing - and wet.

Love the idea, but it just doesn't seem to work out for us.

We were dedicated UK campers, did it for years. Off to Cornwall for a bit of surfing. It rained or was wet and misty for every year of the six years we went. When we totalled up every year what we had spent, mainly amusing ourselves 'cos we were rained off. We have now found its cheaper for a week in Greece than camping in Cornwall. So if any-one wants camping gear I dont think we will use ours ever again.

I tried camping holidays. We went to St Tropez (Port Grimaud), it rained, so we rented a caravan instead. Oh and we argued, because we slept really badly, and got invaded by ants :mrgreen:

Was that Praries De La Mer? I have stayed there, it was bloody hot hot year......its a nice place.

You lot have got it all wrong. Ski the ass out of winter, and then hit the Greek Islands in the summer. Camping, Schamping

I went camping in Australia a few years ago. It was great, and quite exciting. I hired a Toyota Landcruiser with one of my cousins and we did the Gibb River road in the Kimberleys - dirt road with rocky fords over the rivers and loads of beautiful gorges with palm trees etc. It was the dry season and we didn't bother with tents - just slept on ground sheets in our sleeping bags. The most frightening bit was when I realised all the logs lying on the river bank that I was walking past were crocodiles! I was about 10 feet away when I realized they weren't logs :shock:

Very funny, unless the tent is airtight, ants will get in :roll: Big crawly black ants going up your nose and in your mouth while you sleep.

Yes, Snapzzz, it was on Prairies de la Mer. The rain was a bit epic :shock: Folks that stayed in their tents were washed out.

We did however manage to do some skiing. On the way back we drove up to Les Arcs to stay for a few days. Did some mountain biking in the July snow and then some skiing in Tignes on the glacier. This was when Tignes proudly advertised skiing 365 days.

Funny isn't it, I've been there done it with regards to camping.....we did the drive down to France and Spain when the kids were smaller, but now its just the 2 of us we have fallen for the Greek Islands, and theres so many of them to see.

I spent most of the 1990s on a Greek island and they are mostly beautiful, but after a while you just want a change so we spent a few years around southern Italy & Sicily, and then started visiting the mountains in summer a week on the coast and a week in the mountains.
Starting camping again last summer and really enjoyed it so South of France here we come.
