Christmas Skiing advice.

Looking at the prices for Xmas week (26th Dec onwards) i was pleasantly surprised at the cost and are therefore seriously considering it for next year.

Can i ask those that have skied over xmas what their thoughts are? Is it way too busy? Is the early season just to early to risk snow wise? Would you recommend it?

We are looking at ADH or Flaine.

Thanks

Jon

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Been skiing in France over Xmas for the last 3 years. Snow was a bit thin in Saint Gervais 2 years ago but was fine this year in Termignon and good 3 years ago in Notre Dame de Bellecombe. It is not generally busy where I have been and I would certainly recommend it.

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Only skied once over Christmas and it was full of "escapees" from the traditional UK Christmas. Had champagne at the top of a mountain on Christmas day so it can't all be bad. Alos, nowhere near as crowded as New Year.

Snapzzz
Have tried to persuade 'my lot' to go over XMas for the last 3 years; if you leave it late there always ( at least when have looked on the web) seems to be very cheap deals to be had with at least 50% off retail price. Would wait so you get the deals & know what the snow is like.
Good luck
FB

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

I was looking at the week between xmas and new year, the flights seem to be on xmas eve. I was just a touch worried about the crowds!!

@FB
Leaving late sounds good but i would prefer to be booked and know what is happening.

Of course the other main reason to go early is to give my self the excuse to have two holiday next year, perhaps on in early march. I cannot pull my daughter of of school twice in three months.

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Snapzzz,
Seriously looked over the last 3 xmas breaks & there have always been some seriously excellent late discounts; leave it late or you will kick yourself; most folks seem to want to stay home for xmas & go over new year.
FB

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

At the mo we are looking at around GBP1200-GBP1300 for 2 adults and 1 child SC.
Do you think it will get cheaper than that? I have noticed that late deals seem to be become less just lately and the TO's are favouring early bookings.

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Snapzzz,
Not been skiing during the Christmas Holiday however, have been 3 times during the white week in Austria at the begining of December. Always been bags of snow and the price is much cheaper. Just a thought  A good kick start to your Christmas break.

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Just my tuppence worth on booking early or late. We went on 27 December 2 years ago to Zell am See for New Year. We only decided to go in September and although we got the flights booked easily enough a lot of the apartments and hotels were booked out. We did eventually get an apartment and it was a fantastic holiday but I would say if you get a reasonable deal then just book it. Ria x

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Christmas week is usually a little quieter than new year as NY is a bigger event in Europe. NY is normally the busiest week of the season in France.

Skied in Flaine over NY 2 years ago, and there were one or two queues at peak times on the main lifts but nothing horrendous, but then the snow was excellent.

If Flaine, which accomodation are you considering?

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Dates this year will probably be from 24th - 31st December.
Snow this year was excellent in Montgenevre. Christmas is more expensive than January, but cheaper and less crowded than new year and half-term (about 1/3 cheaper).

This year most resorts probably had better snow at Christmas than they did for half-term week.

Get a nice chalet, roast a capon, bring a few small presents... lovely

Re:Christmas Skiing advice.

Snapzz,
Have seen many 3 & 4 star hotels ( inc flight & transfer) , half board reduced to around the GBP300/wk mark for xmas week ( but this wont be the case if you want new years eve as well!).
As others have stated, new years is highly sought after and usually top price.
If you want xmas & not new years eve, wait & get a bargain where the snow is.
FB
