Hi,

Thought I'd post here as my partner and I usually ski in Europe but due to snow levels being low at the mo are thinking about going state side.

Can anyone recommend any resorts? I've heard good things about Breckenridge and the transfer isn't too bad.

I'm an Intermediate skier but hoping to go off piste and my partner, well she was born on ski's :)

West coast

Any advice greatly appreciated :)

Many thanks

T1b

Finally went off Piste!

Utah is the best place to ski in the US, easiest access from the East Coast to SLC, and from the West Coast, that's a blink of an eye away. You have basically storied ski areas with incredible amounts of snow : Alta, Snowbird,Solitude, Snowbasin, Park City, Deer Valley, Brighton, Powder Mountain. All within a 55 mile radii quarter circle of SLC. You will find beautiful terrain, serious powder, and hard core back-country, what you call off-piste, with chutes, bowls, trees etc. There is more to ski here than a lifetime's worth.

Colorado is higher, less snow, more trees, and much harder to get to in general or you drive 3hrs plus from Denver on the infamous I-70.

Mammoth has a lot of snow, that is California as does Squaw right now.

Other options are Revelstoke, Whistler-Blackcomb or Lake Louise in Canada.,

I have TR's here of Alta and Snowbasin.
Good luck.
Skiing is good for the soul!

I would second the Salt Lake City idea. It's not going to be a mountain village experience, unless you pay a lot more to be near the slopes, but you could easily explore four or five different resorts in a week all within a half hour or so drive. Then spend the evenings in SLC, with all that a big city offers.

Park City offers three resorts within a few minutes of the town, and the buses are free. Accommodation will cost more though.

The snow at Utah looks fantastic, but wouldn't the flights to Salt Lake City be pretty expensive from the U.K.? And you can't get a direct flight from here - you'd have to change, say, at New York.

Maybe I was looking in the wrong place, but the flights I was looking at cost £500 upwards. For comparison, I managed to get a return flight from the U.K. to Geneva for £60.

And, I think the lift passes are even more expensive than in Europe.

If I wanted to go and ski in the U.S. I think I'd be looking for the cheapest holiday, including everything.

The US Homeland Security welcome committee has put me off ever skiing in the US again. That and the flight taxes. I would consider Canada, but hub through AMS to avoid being gouged by UKGOV.
Yes Ally, lift ticket prices are quite a shocker after Europe.

Yeah, Homeland Security gave me a going over while visiting my partner while she was in the SF. The odd thing is I was going over once a month and 80% of the time it was thumb, picture and leave. One guy was asking me about my partners visa! He got "the arse" when I said "I've no idea about her Visa as I'm not her", went down like a lead brick.

Still, have to go where the snow is and it's looking more and more like Breckenridge, 2 hr drive isn't so bad but Tahoe is well out as we're only going for a week.

Cheers for all the replies though! :)

Immigration control can be a pain if you mention a girlfriend. What ever you do, don't mention marriage. They will freak out.
