Can any one advise on the best rental shops for ski hire in Mayrhofen.
Not too worried about costs, more interested in quality kit that won't let us down (one good intermediate, two begineers - 1 week each last season)
Opinions of where not to go is just as relevant

Going Jan 17th for two weeks - can't wait!! :D

Thanks in advance

I instruct there and so see all the different skis. Not had too many problems with any of the shops. just dont get the base package and you should be fine. I would also recommend picking up your skis as soon as you get there as some of the smaller places run out of the better stuff early.

the best place may be manni sport, but its really over priced and i dont think its worth it, if you're having lessons ask the ski school to organise your kit and you should get a discount.

oh, and watch for shops handing out dynastar "trouble makers" to beginners, i dont know why but they love doing it.

Absolutely dont go to Mannis.. From personal experience, they give out second rate and not well maintained equipment. I had awful problems with boots, and my son had poor quality skis as well. We ended up going back on a regular basis one holiday! We used Mannis as they were the supplier for the tour operator via Skiset. I am not sure if things have improved since then, but I would most certainly suggest you use the Sport 2000 hire shop directly underneath the Penken Gondola. They are good guys there, and they will also store your skis and boots for you overnight as part of the package if you want them to. Boots will be nice and warm in the mornings too.
They are slightly more expensive, but it was worth it.
I would also suggest getting either the silver or gold package as well, as you will get better skis and boots generally, again worth paying that little extra.

Enjoy Mayrhofen. It has been great every time I have been, even when we were told the snow wasnt any good. Nice and quiet in January on the slopes too. I will be there boxing day for 5 days.

Thanks for the replies guys. i'll take it on board.

Tony_H, got our own boots now, I had bad experience with boots last season so we took the plunge and bought our own (custom fit) for this season.
Regarding ski's is there any disadvantage for a relative begineer to use the higher quality ski's that you would get in the gold package ?

Do either of you have any suggestions for ski school there seem to be quite a few in Mayrhofen ?

Using gold package skis means you will get newer and more technical skis. The downside is that you might end up with "fast" skis that might run away with you. However, the downside to the bronze packages is that you often get older skis in not such good condition.
I would probably opt for the silver package and get some newer intermediate skis. They might be best for you.

As for ski school, I have heard good reports about the Habeler school, and also Die Roten Profis, although my learn-ed friend Skidaddle would know more about this than me, as I havent had lessons in "The Hof"

The hire shop underneath the Penken gondola is "Skizone", not Sport 2000, which is next to the lift station and not as good.

Skizone has the best choice and the best reputation by far - its a little pricier than the others but well worth it for the quality and attention you get. Its properly insured gear as well, which is very important. They have the added advantage of overnight storage at the bottom and top of both main ski areas, which can be a god-send!

As Tony says, Mannis is to be avoided at all costs. Crap gear and disinterested staff, which is putting it politely.

Sport Wegscheider is worth a look though - they're a great bunch in there and can't do enough for you. Not sure they have an overnight deposit though.

There are 4 ski schools and I would advise you went to SMT, just down the road from the Penken lift and on the same side. Its run by one of the "original" instructors from when there was only one skischool in the village. I'm sure the others are very good too, but my experience of SMT is all good.

Enjoy!

Hehe sounds like i'll leave rental shop advice to the others. will throw in some advice on ski schools. obviously this is opinion and everyone will have different views but i've worked in 2 of these schools (not saying which) and heres my view.

4 schools...

skischule 3000. regarded by the locals as the best school, was started a few years ago when mike thanner took all the best instructors from the others. Its not huge tho and the kids school is on another mountain to the adults school.

SMT - by far the biggest school, is the best run, its big enough to accomadate any requirements. lot of time for Max Rahm the owner but remember these guys WILL NOT be instructing you and wont effect the caliber of instructor there. A good all-round ski school, sometimes you can get lost in the numbers of customers though.

Habeler- Under new management now, not a bad school per se, i would suggest tho that as the smallest school by a long way they often have problems dealing with random problems.

Roten Profis- the butt of every ski instructor joke in mhf, a lot of instructors have no qualification (2 years ago a third of foriegn workers were sent home). this one is a money making tool, they look big and important and concentrate on the one-time shopper. In my (and most others) opinion should be avoided at all costs.

excellent, that killed some time

Skizone - thats the one I was on about, not Sport 2000.
Wegscheider was an excellent shop, my daughter bought her Atomic RC's in there, but I have not used them for rental. They do have excellent staff though, probably worth a look.
