i am thinking of going somewhere different from France.
When does the Bulgarian season start ?
Is everything cheap compared to the more usual Eupopean resorts ?
Any other tips ?

Are we talking about the same Bansko that i visited Jan 2007? From your discription i think not.
Queues for well over an hour to get up the mountain and queues for the lifts once up there.
To say its like Austria without the kms is a bit of an exaggeration as Austria is spotless as in clean and beautiful.I think the 60p plonk has clouded your judgement a bit, But hey each to there own.

My tip to you would be not to consider Bulgaria for a ski holiday to be honest. Try Austria or Italy or Switzerland if you want a change from France. Or go back to France.

My advice is stay well away from Bulgaria! I went there in Feb this year :shock:...not good for many reasons:
Not good skiing
Locals ripping off tourists big time.
Not cheap any more...and no improvments.
Complete lack of health and safety procedures.
Dirty.
Lot's of crime...if you've got your own equipment keep it with you at all times.
Hire equipment on average about 20 years old and not properly serviced or fitted.
...I could go on!!!
Go to Austria that's is my suggestion.

season starts just before Christmas depending on snow, last year it was 10th.
Dont know where the others are talking about,i cant say anything about Borovets or Pamporovo as i have never been, but Bansko is fine.
Sure prices have crept up, some places in Bansko itself are taking the
p!55, but there are cheap places if you know where to look, typically you will pay 2 and half to 3 quid for a beer in Bansko, try staying a little further out with a private operator and you will pay about 60p.
The lifts are new, the slopes are well looked after and only busy at peak times. There are queues for the gondola in the morning sometimes, but there are never queues for the rest of the lifts.

Never tried to hide that fact, sure i have a small hotel here, but not in Bansko town i dont really like the place.
Skiings not bad though, and have had to queue longer in main stream resorts for lifts, maybe we just go at the right time.
Would love to have moved to France but could not afford it, Sister came here with husband and 3 kids in March, spent 1600 quid all in, she wouldnt have had change from 4 grand in the alps.
hey its a poor country, you get what you pay for.
Shladming is the only place i have been to in Austria and yes it was great, bulgaria cant compete yet, but if like me you want as many ski holidays as possible the second or third or fourth needs to be cheaper.
