Heading to the Hochkönig ski area next month, done my usual research and it ticks a lot of boxes for me so decided to organise a DIY trip.

Just wondered if anyone has been and can share any knowledge on the area, good huts to visit up the mountain, and possible buses to other nearby areas (most notably I'm considering Leogang and getting a day or two in Saalbach)

It's lower altirude than I'd normally gamble on for March they've had a great base this season and I'm told there's a micro climate of its own here with mainly north facing slopes so fingers crossed this warm spell clears off soon!

Thanks in advance. Always good to get advise and recommendations from people who have been themselves.

Hi Tony. I've been to leogang 17 plus times and leogang once. We love it. We are there on 16th March. We get all over the world. Japan states Canada Norway France etc but we love the familiarity of the place and the snow is amazing. We have never had a bad trip there. Ever. It may be low but it's snowsure. Fiberbruun is a fab place hochkonig trail is a must even though the last time I was there I completely dislocated my elbow in the kings park. Haha. You will love it. We always hire a car. It's so much easier. For instance. We got caught in saalbach once with time as the lifts were closing. It took 2 hours by bus back to leogang with lots of walking for connecting buses. Ski buses in leogang are amazing but don't get stuck somewhere. Also kitzteinhorn is a great day. It's gotten busy over the last few years with a Russian movement but it's still great and some fab x trails to do. Like mini couloirs. Anyway I hope that is enough for you. Ha. Zell for me is a bit blah but horses for courses eh. Beautiful lake. If you get a chance, Salzburg is a fab day out and the redbull museum near the airport is a must if you've not been. Enjoy man. The Konigstour is a good way to see all of the valley and is worth doing to start with. Very easy to follow and a lovely day of skiing. The Gabuhel Hut is very nice and the food at the Zachofalm is the best I have had up a mountain, anywhere! The painfully hipster Tom hut is a nice place to finish the day and the after-hours ski home is lovely with the Hochkonig backdrop. If you have a car, Leogang would be a very easy 25 mins to reach and is also lovely skiing. Zell is also under 30 mins away. Remember to buy the Salzburger Superski pass rather than the Hochkonig one.
