Transportation between the Dolomite resorts

Hi all, first time poster to this forum.

My wife and I are spending a couple of months skiing in Europe over January/ February and we will be travelling by car. For two weeks we will be in staying in Alleghe (at the foot of Civetta) but we plan on purchasing the Dolomiti Superski pass to give us the freedom to visit some of the other resorts available with the pass. We haven't fully decided which other areas we would plan on skiing but they would probably include Arabba, Alta Badia and Contina d'Ampezzo along with our home base of Civetta.

My question is, are there buses running between the Superski pass resorts or should we plan on using our car whenever we go to another ski area? If we do have to use our car, what's the parking like in February?

Carnivale is late this year (March sometime I think), so parking may be easier than usual in February

There is a bus service ..of sorts .between Possa and Alba .but it is not easy to get around the Dolomiti superki area ..it can take up to 3 hours ..by car ..so you have to plan it beforehand look on Rome2rio and you will get a feel for it going from the val di Fassa to say Selva is a journey of uncountable hairpins and going from Campitello to Kronplatz took 2.5 hrs last season..by car

Hi, I suggest going by car! You will be much more flexible and can decide spontaneously where to go! Parking is not a problem, as far as I know all of the Super Ski resorts have big parking spaces.

Hi, yes parking is no problem and the roads are generally kept as clear as possible. Just make sure your car has good winter tyres and I would have snow chains in the boot too, just in case :).

Dolomiti Superski website has a route planner for getting from A to B using lifts and buses only. The time given is the total time spent on lifts/buses, doesn't incl skiing/waiting for lifts/bus.

Civetta ski area is connected by a skibus (fare €5 last year) to the start of Cinque Torri (part of Cortina ski area) by Pescul - Fedare route. To get to the main Cortina area you need to take another bus from Bai de Dones. We used the skibuses skiing from the centre of Cortina to Alleghe last year...had a car(without winter tires) but the roads were bit iffy in the morning thus decided to try the bus connections.We are fast skiers and know the area, it all worked out well, had plenty of time to ski the Civetta ski area and get back to Cortina.

Alleghe is connected to Arabba/Marmolada ski area by a ski bus Alleghe-Malga Ciapela...from there you can take couple of lifts up to head directly towards Arabba or alternatively cable car up to Marmolada, ski down the glacier run and continue towards Arabba by taking a lift up. I would say Arabba-Marmolada ski area is easier to reach from Alleghe by bus. To Cortina, I'd go by car when roads are clear.

Dolomiti Superski website is very good, they have up to date info for all 12 ski areas, worth having a look.

Sorry, just realised you were planning to ski in Alta Badia too... definitely you'd need a car to get there and back. There's a car park in Armentarola or further down the road in San Cassiano. Think it would take about an hour from Alleghe to San Cassiano via Passo Falzarego.
From Falzarego you can take a cable car up to Lagazuoi to ski down a beautiful route to Armentarola, only catch is that if you leave car up at Falzarego car park there's no lift connection back up... but they do run very efficient ski bus/taxi service back up (I think it's €6/person).

WOW 2 weeks skiing on the Dolomites, lucky you!I would definitely move my car. you can leave early and be at the lift as they open and you wouldn't need to worry about getting the skibus on the way back.
One day you could leave the car at Falzarego, go up Lagazuoi and ski down to Capanna Alpina + horses to Armentarola and then stay in Alta Badia (as suggested by Flat Country skier); another day you can go to Arabba and do Marmolada and Val di Fassa (including Buffaure) and don't forget Val Gardena (probably the best way would be to either leave your car in Corvara and ski from there). Given that you have time, you can do an area per day. It then comes down to preference (and how fast you ski): whether you want to do a run once and then move on, or whether you find somewhere you like and want to spend a bit more time. You are likely to find queues at the cable cars for Marmolada and for Lagazuoi. If you go to Alta Badia, go to Vallon, Col Pradat, Gran Risa and (if you have time) Santa Croce. Pralongia is a criss-cross of blue runs that take you from A to B. Val Gardena..........I'd go twice. One day to do Seceda, and maybe Alpe di Siusi (via Ortisei) and back.........if you don't lose track of time on the Dantercepies and the Cir :-) , and one day to go to Ciampinoi, Monte Pana, Sassolungo, Col Rodella (technically in val di Fassa) Have a great time!
oh yes, with regards to car "equipment" you do need either winter tyres or chains otherwise you can get fined

Hello from New Zealand. I've been to the Dolomites four times and will be going again this January. I definitely recommend moving around by car. I have found the roads are kept in good condition and certainly driveable with winter tires (obviously chains in the boot just in case!). The carparks are large and generally well located to the lifts. The scenery is stunning driving through the passes and valleys.
