New Slopes in Spain

J2SkiNews posted Oct-2018

Baqueira Beret in Spain's Val d'Aran has announced new ski runs will open there this winter.
The resort, located a little over 100 miles from Barcelona, already has the largest ski area in the Spanish Pyrenees with 165km of piste.

The new runs, covering around 2.27 hectares, will be created in the resort's os Baciver area, close to the Saumet's zone.

A new mile-long surface lift with as capacity of 800 people per hour will provide access to the new area. The new lift will take the resort's hourly uplift capacity to 61,024 people.
"It really is a beautiful area where the freeriding will be the main draw with lots of off piste areas to enjoy easy and safe free skiing," said Commercial Director Xavi Ubeira.

Baqueira is also improving its snowmaking system and adding two new grooming machines to its fleet.

Baqueira Beret will open on 1 December and will be hoping for a repeat of its 2017/18 winter season which was one of its best ever with 63 days of snowfall, resulting in 10 metres of snow on the pistes before grooming, and catered to circa 887,000 skiers and snowboarders.

Baqueira-Beret, has a base resort at 1,500m and its highest lift reaching 2,610m. The extensive terrain includes three ungroomed itinerary runs, most significantly the Escornabrabes run, whose name means 'where goats fall' in Aranese. There is also the option to try heliskiing in the nearby Val d'Aran and Vielha and other snow activities in the resort including dog sledding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ski touring.

Events coming up this winter include the FIS Snowboard World Cup – Snowboard Cross which takes place in Baqueira Beret / Val d'Aran from 1-2 March 2019 where visitors can watch four to six competitors race down the exciting course, comprising cambered turns, various types of jumps, beams, rollers and drops.
