Heavy Snowfall For mid-May in the Alps

J2SkiNews posted May-2018

It has been snowing heavily overnight with ski areas in France reporting up to 30cm (a foot) of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

Currently there are six glacier ski areas still open in the Alps, with Italy's Cervinia ski area now open at weekends-only in May. A seventh area, the Molltal glacier, ended its very long 17-18 ski season yesterday.

There aren't any ski areas open in France at present following the season-ending at Val Thorens and Tignes last week. However Val d'Isere had already announced it would start its 2018 summer ski season early, in just under 3 weeks' time on Saturday June 3rd, with skiing on some of its winter (non-glacier) ski slopes for the first time in its 82 year history.

That effort has been given a boost today as it has reported the biggest snowfall so far - on those very same slopes.

The snow is expected to continue to fall over the coming few days, moving eastwards, with the six still-open centres forecast to receive up to 50cm of new snow by Friday.

They include Engelberg and Zermatt on Switzerland and the Dachstein, Kitzsteinhorn, Stubai and Kaunertal glaciers in Austria. The latter closes its nearly nine-month long season this coming Sunday.

Presumably avalanche risk; fresh snow on a deep snow pack that's probably now quite wet and heavy from mid-mountain down?

We've just been told that they hope to open tomorrow, subject to conditions.

Engelberg's open for snowsports today; no snow in the village (unsurprisingly) but still 6.5 metres at the top (3,000 metres).
