Easy skiing in Austria or Italy?

Hi

Can anyone recommend a nice traditional resort in Austria or Italy which isn't too mad on the après-ski? We are especially looking for somewhere with a good choice of blues and easy reds to boost confidence following injury. Have looked at Rauris and Seefeld (both seem to have fairly limited skiing although nice villages with good hotels), Kaprun, Kirchberg (not sure how noisy that gets after skiing?!). Have been to the Skiwelt before and the Dolomites and would return to either, but looking for a change possibly. Thank you in hope!

I quite liked Kaprun ..nice easier runs over the glacier and the bus will take you to Zell which has nice runs ..just got back from Campitello in the Dolomites which has varied skiing ...try Obertuern varied red and blues and a nice resort

Thank you Daved, that is helpful. We have been to Obertauern but really didn't have a good experience there unfortunately and also found it to be not traditional enough for us (great snow conditions though!), but will look at Campitello and keep Kaprun on the contender list!

You could try St. Johann, very pretty traditional village and Apre is not too noisy. From St. Johan station you can get the train to Kitzbuhel. The Kitz train station is right next to the gondola. I may be wrong, but I think the train fare is covered by your lift pass. St Johann area is not massive, but has some good runs. Kitzbuhel is a big area and has lively apre scene.
Alternatively you could try Neiderau, that is quiet and has bus links to other close by resorts.
With Kaprun, the only local slopes are on the Maiskogel and there are only about 3 runs. The umbrella bar at the bottom of the Maiskogel is prob the best and liveliest Apre bar I have ever been in. Alternatively as suggested you can get bus to the Glacier or Zell.
Also to consider is Bad Hofgastein, this is a much quieter resort than Bad Gastein and is much cheaper. The ski area is not too bad as Hofgastein and Gastein are linked and you can get buses to Sport Gastein or Dorfgastein. Buses run very regularly and the service is good. Only downside is the current Funicular/Cabin Gondola lift system in Bad Hofgastein to get you up the mountain. It takes ages and gets very busy.
Saalbach is a great resort with large ski area, but tends to be expensive, Apre is as loud or quiet as you want it to be.
Schladming is another good area, again quite expensive, and Apre can be lively.

A lot depends on how you are booking. If you go via Crystal Ski, then you are limited, but if you can arrange your own travel/transfers then the world is you Lobster (or something like that). There are dozens of Austrian ski resorts that Crystal don't do, but are really worth a visit.
Google Igluski, then enter the site and search on the listed ski resorts to get some background info on each one.

As for Italy, I have been to several ski areas, but found the lift systems to be old and slow. My wife won't go back to Italy now because of the squat toilets, which I agree cannot be much fun for ladies in ski gear. As for us blokes, well we have this handy thing that allows us to stand up and ......... Maybe best if I left it at that I think.

And I agree with you / your wife about the toilets although fortunately in the Dolomites we didn't experience anything other than quality / normal ones!! Interesting to read about Italy's ski lifts too - I had felt there was a difference between the two countries, but not enough experience of Italian resorts to make a sensible comparison. All very interesting. :)

Cervinia is perfect for wide open relaxed skiing. I went there the year after a acl injury operation when I was nervous and it suited me perfectly.
It's high and snow sure with some excellent restaurants in the town and on the mountain. Not sure about the toilet situation but if I remember it was normal toilets.

Interesting about the Italian toilets...have not come across any other than very modern and clean or just normal ones...different ski resorts in the Dolomites, Livigno, Madonna di Campiglio, even in La Thuile everything seem to be fine :)
Madonna di Campiglio might be an option...lots of intermediate skiing, quiet in the evenings (except during the world cup weekend in December). Linked to Pinzolo and Folgarida/Marilleva, ski pass gives one day in Passo Tonale too if interested.

I agree with your comment re Italian loos ...they all seem to be really modern and free and there seems to be plenty of them ..especially in the dolomites where i have been for the last two seasons...now France was a different story ..there are still some squatters around.. I dont know when Gareth went to Italy but the lifts seem very modern to me this year lots of new bubbles
