My friend and I are going to val d'isere and val thorens in April, we're 16 and we both have fake ids. Are they really strict on letting people in and giving drinks??? Do they check IDS?? Will they care less if we're from abroad... Thanks would really appreciate an answer in case we get into trouble ! Xx

As long as you don't try to buy spirits, cocktails or alcopops, use your normal ID if you are 16. In France you can drink beer, cider and wine starting from 16. So enjoy while you can. Kids with fake IDs are not very hard to spot, I used to work in the bar. We are not blind.

Wikipedia (which could be a load of rubbish) states that selling alcohol to under 18s in France is illegal but there is no age limit for consuming alcohol. Law was changed in 2009, apparently. Whatever you do, enjoy yourself, but don't get too hammered (the French don't traditionally like people getting hammered - and you don't want to lose a day's skiing chucking your guts up). And make sure you look after each other - more than a few people have died falling asleep outside in the freezing cold in ski resorts (yes, I know it will be April but it can still get cold of an evening).

So looks like they've raised it. Used to be 16. Now I see why their teenagers are coming to bars in Geneva from across the border - it might be a little more expensive but at least it's legal.

Wise words Dobby. I still shudder when I think of those rivers running through towns in Spring as the snows melt. So easy to stumble.
Chances are you'll be too shattered to get incapable.

Have to say this is the most 'British' questions ever and frankly a tiny bit embarrassing; thankfully given have spent ½ my life outside the country I can semi deny association. To answer your question I believe bars in Alps are getting much stricter because the risk of losing your license for the minimal upside of selling a few drinks to an underage customer who will most likely 'miss-behave' be it inside your bar or within the town (think urinating in street, vomit, feeling need to wake people up) does not add up. Go enjoy your skiing, order a demi, much more likely to get served than a large shot order and enjoy. I would also like to recommend you get involved in Brexit negotiations, EU will see the clear cultural clash and smooth UK way out of the door.

Imbeciles! If your ID is successful in your local wetherspoons I suggest you go there for a week!

Don't go to Ischgl in Austria. They will hit you with a €2000 fine if you are in town and wearing ski boots after 8.00pm!
