Hi,
thinking about having a short trip to Chamonix in Mid December 2016, but a bit nervous about the snow.
The last 2 years have seen snow arriving late and I don't know if this is the new pattern due to climate change or maybe just a blip, as I know it has happened in the distant past.

Can anybody comment on what the conditions are normally like in Chamonix in mid December?

I would look at another resort, but we are really limited in terms of flight destinations from our local airport and I don't have the time to travel to one of the larger airports.
We would be flying into Geneva, so maybe there are other ski resorts with good snow record within reach?
Looked at Tignes, but can't get the transfers to align.
Skied: On snow, On water, On mud, On slush, On ice. Oh, and on a few dry slopes.

Mid December can be a bit of a lottery. There may be enough snow to derail the train and close every hill in the valley (happened to me one year), or little enough to only allow Grand Montets to open. At least with Chamonix you can choose the hill aspect to suit the weather on the day.

I go every season usually for 2nd weekend, we ski Val Tho Thursday and Friday and then usually Les Contamines for the weekend. However, bear in mind year before last Contamines/Cham did not open due to no snow (it is the 1st time that has happened to me) so we staying in Val Tho. I would recommend fly to geneva and hire a car from French side, then you have many options based on where is open.

If your mid-December dates are before December 17 and don't fall on weekends Chamonix won't be open. As for snow, it has already started to fall and what is more important it's actually cold outside, so there is a chance that this snow will stay.

If you look at webcams then I doubt snow will be a issue, but as VSB says you need to check lift opening. Chamonix does not typically deviate from schedule as the number of skiers don't justify opening the lifts regardless of conditions. Note different areas open on different dates Balme 10th, GM 16th http://www.compagniedumontblanc.co.uk/

Definitely worth a shot although Cervinia would always be the standout choice for December skiing.

2 hours on the dot to St Martin de Belleville with quick links up to Val Thorens. You want to be high in December, and they don't come much higher than VT :)
