Hello

I'll be visiting Zurich (from Australia) in early January with one day to ski.

Can anyone please suggest where I should go?

I tend to think of myself as a high intermediate skier, who prefers groomed runs.

I thought the higher in altitude the better (especially as it will be early January), but would not want to spend more than say about 2 hours each way in travel by train or bus from Zurich Central Station (I won't have a car).

I'll need to hire skis and boots, and expect to also need to hire ski clothing (parka, pants) as I won't have room to pack anything more than goggles, gloves and beanie.

I don't mind if I have to hire the clothes in Zurich but would want to hire the skis & boots at the ski field.

The only idea so far is that a friend suggested Hoch-Ybrig.

Thankyou for any suggestions. :-)

Within 2 hours train/bus you are limited to lower altitude options, but should be snow sure. For good open slopes, groomers and closeness to Zurich, Flumseberg is a good option, very convenient. hooch y Brig is similar. Elm is lesser known, probably still in that travel time and has a nice, more local, feel.
Engelberg is a great field, high altitude - up to 3000 meters (Might be longer than 2 hours train? Not sure)...stunning scenery, but better for advanced and off piste - still great options on piste, but it is a powder heaven.
Another similar option with more groomed options would be Flims Laax, or Klosters - very extensive and good travel connections.
Enjoy!

Englberg is under 2 hours on a train from Zurich, including about 20 minutes waiting for a train in Lucerne.

Hello and sorry for the delay in replying.

Just wanted to thank you all for your suggestions and let you know that I had a great day skiing at Flims Laax and achieved my goal of skiing at 3,000m! :-)

Now, I just have to let my bank account recover, as the exchange rate on the $A is not so good at the moment.

Always good when a plan comes together! 8)

Were you able to hire ski clothes, as you were thinking, or did buy something in the end?

Yes I hired parka and pants at Free Ski hire at Flims. They had Oakley clothing, only a small range, but got us out of trouble.

Seemed expensive to us but sometimes you've just got to put your card in the machine and look the other way.

hijacking this thread as its mostly what I will like to find out as well.

Im travelling with my wife to Zurich in mid Feb. Looking for a ski resort not more than 3hrs travel time away from Zurich Airport. The plan is to find a place we can ski for 4 days 3 nights, and depart in the morning to make it in time for a 1030am international flight back Singapore.

We have skied less than 3 times, a place that is friendly for beginners, with english speaking ski instructors will be most helpful.

Took a look at the suggestions above and wonder if they might apply in our case? FLumserberg, Engelberg. Thanks !
