After a recent ski holiday, I had a huge problem with turning and even stopping!. I am an experienced skier and have not had this problem before. I felt like the front of my foot didn't want to work as everyone said my position was the norm and that my weight looked balanced. Skis would start to flap approaching the turn. The only thing I can think is that I took my gel soles out as they were 'wrinkled'. I tried tightening the toes on the boots but then it was too tight!! Can soles make that much of a difference? Could this have been the problem? (I couldn't even do a snow plough stop on the green run! ) any suggestions ? :?:

Did you try swapping skis?

Doesn't sound like the gel soles would make that much difference and, if you're sure your weight / foot pressure is in the right place, then I'd be looking at the position of the bindings I think? Sounds a bit odd though.

The boots and skis are the same as used for past two years??! Just seemed like my toes didn't have control of the ski??! Sounds funny, I know, but that was the sensation. It seemed like I was using my heel more than whole foot so adjusted balance but no..... Seemed hard to work out something that I naturally do without thinking! Felt like week one of skiing!!!

It may be that the removal of the gel soles would have a small effect, particularly if they were part foot. Heels can be 6~8mm thick, and removing them might cant the leg backwards by as much as 3 ~ 5 degrees.
That could be sufficient to give your body a more upright stance, meaning that your weight is not as far forward as in previous years.

Hence loss of steering!

Thanks for the replies......just seemed that the only thing different from previous years, was the soles, and the lack of being able to control front of the foot. Going to pop to ski shop and see what they say and probably get myself some more soles!!! :-) cheers

Did it persist for your whole ski holiday? This is really strange and now it's difficult to isolate the problem. Could be anything, really, including even skis on "wrong" feet or snow on boot soles/bindings, or boot not put on properly, but these normally don't last very long before being figured out and fixed. Strange. Maybe your removed insoles had something to do with it. Was it on both skis or on one side only?

Do you ski on your own skis or rental?
My reason for asking is that a couple of years ago I had an interesting last couple of days on holiday. Half the time I couldn't ski! Half the time it was fine!!
Totally odd - but I didn't worry too much as I was recovering from a dodgy knee and thought it was probably the bad knee getting tired.
But when I went back to the hire shop to return the skis they pointed out that I had broken them. I hadn't noticed!
When the technician showed me one side of one ski was "bent" about 15/18" in from the tip.
Hence why my problem was sometimes only - depending on which ski was on which foot.
If the good edge was inside - no problem.
If the broken edge was on inside - I couldn't ski.
At least the skis were insured.
